Edo G & Insight InnovatesEdo G & Insight Innovates ... LP
Brick, 2021. Near Mint- ... $19.99 24.99
A great back to basics set from Edo G and Insight Innovates – part of a recent run of records on the scene that really seem to redirect hip hop to more straightforward modes – not at a retro level, but in a style that reminds us that at the core, the music is best when it's got a strong focus on beats and quality rhymes! Neither artist is out to change the world, but together they've got a way of uniting hip hop history with a contemporary sensibility – no fuzz or fluff, just tight at the core, and all the way through. Titles include "Just Listen", "Unite & Let's All Get Down", "It Takes Progress", "Good In Goodbye", "Never Too Late To Correct Mistakes", "Choose Your Path", and Set It Off", a tribute to Big Daddy Kane! Ramsey LewisSongs From The Heart – Ramsey Plays Ramsey ... CD
Concord, 2009. Used ... $1.99
A pretty sweet set from the legendary Ramsey Lewis – possibly his best in years – all original material performed with his impeccable trio! If title Songs From The Heart has you expecting smooth, commercial fluff, you'll be pleasantly surprised. It's exceptional trio jazz all the way. Lovely and tender, but precise and very moving material. It includes songs Ramsey wrote, quite surprisingly, for the Joffrey Ballet Company, and other pieces he wrote to perform with the Turtle Island Quartet. Straight forward, lyrical jazz from Ramsey's piano to your soul, backed masterfully by bassist Larry Gray and drummer Leon Joyce, plus some equally wonderful solo pieces. Titles include "To Know Her Is To Love Her", "Touching, Feeling, Knowing", "Clouds In Reverie", "The Spark", "Conversation", "The Way She Smiles", "The Glow Of Her Charm", "Long Before She Know", "Watercolors" and more. Small Faces78 In The Shade ... LP
Atlantic, 1978. Near Mint- ... $5.99 7.99
78 in the shade, and 78 on the calendar too – 1978, a year when the reborn Small Faces were still sounding plenty darn great! The album follows nicely from the previous Playmates – with the strong rootsy undercurrents as that one, way more than in the group's earlier music – produced tightly, but still at a level that's free from commercial fluff or any too-easy attempts at a hit. Steve Marriott's presence in the lead is great – the the overall presentation is surprisingly free of hoke, and the album falls somewhere in the territory of the best solo material by Ronnie Laine, Rod Stewart, or Ron Wood. Titles include "Over Too Soon", "Brown Man Do", "Real Sour", "Filthy Rich", "Stand By Me", and "Let Me Down Gently". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has light wear.)

✨✧ Paul McCartneyMcCartney II (2CD & DVD Deluxe Edition) ... CD
MPL, 1980. Used 2CD & DVD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Paul McCartney has left Wings behind for this record – but in their place he's come up with a wonderful new approach – serving up all the instruments himself, as he did on the first album titled Paul McCartney – but also using more electronics than before, which makes for some wonderfully moody moments! The songwriting is great – every bit as strong as the 70s years, without some of Paul's later 80s fluff – and the change in instrumentation really makes for some beautifully haunting moments. The set includes "Waterfalls" – one of our favorite tracks ever by Paul – and other titles include the hit "Coming Up", the groovy "Temporary Secretary", and the tracks "Darkroom", "Summer Day's Song", "On The Way", "Nobody Knows", "Bogey Music", and "Frozen Jap". Deluxe edition includes two CDs of additional tracks and a DVD enclosed in a numbered hardbound book. CD
(Out of print limited numbered edition.)

✨✧ Brian SouthallThe White Album – Revolution, Politics & Recording: The Beatles & The World In 1968 (hardcover) ... Book
Carlton, 2018. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A unique sort of book – one with both an a-side and a b-side, each of which takes a different approach to The Beatles' classic white album! The first half of the book is an in-depth look at the musical masterpiece – presented with lots of vintage images, reflections on the record by group members, and track-by-track examinations of the double-length album! The second half follows in a similar image-rich approach, but then looks at the context in which the album was released – the cultural scene, political mood, musical vibe, and other aspects of the year 1968 – traced in month by month chapters. And the writing is great – this isn't one of those books that uses pictures to fluff up the text – and the hardcover edition is 10" square, 190 pages, with images throughout. Book

✨✧ Cassandra WilsonGlamoured ... CD
Blue Note, 2003. Used ... Out Of Stock
Don't let the title put you off, because Cassandra Wilson's sounding as soulful as ever – with none of the fluff that you might think from an album called "Glamoured"! The sound is mellow and laidback, with a group that includes Wilson on guitar, alongside a few other guitarists, percussion, and even a bit of harmonica. The instrumentation gives the album a warm and earthy feel that works well with Wilson's vocals, and titles include "Heaven Knows", "I Want More", "Sleight Of Time", "If Loving You Is Wrong", "Fragile", and "What Is It". ✨✧ Black SabbathSabbath Bloody Sabbath ... LP
Warner, 1973. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
A pivotal album for Black Sabbath – a set that further expanded the instrumental palette of their previous work, but all without losing an edge at all – for a record that forever helped cement their role in both the classic and hard rock canons of the 70s! Ozzy is great throughout, and both he and Tony Iommi bring in a bit of keyboard work, but in just the right way – almost adding a more sinister edge to the guitars – echoed by some especially nice acoustic piano at times, particularly on the instrumental cut "Fluff". Titles include the seminal title track "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath" – plus "A National Acrobat", "Sabbra Cadabra", "Spiral Architect", "Looking For Today", and "Killing Yourself To Live". ✨✧ Clarinet SummitSouthern Bells ... CD
Black Saint (Italy), 1987. Used ... $9.99
A groundbreaking ensemble – akin to the World Saxophone Quartet, and no doubt inspired by their experiments at the same time. The difference, though, is the range of experience of the players – as the group features David Murray, Jimmy Hamilton, Alvin Batiste, and John Carter, all playing b-flat or bass clarinets. No other accompaniment is featured, and titles include "Fluffy's Blues", "Beat Box", "Perdido", and "Southern Bells". CD

✨✧ Lesley GoreMagic Colors – The Lost Album Plus Bonus Tracks 1967 to 1969 ... CD
Ace (UK), Late 60s. New Copy ... $11.99 14.99
Lovely 60s girl pop from Lesley Gore – the sweet, soaring, brightly sunny Magic Colors album – released in full for the first time ever – and with a huge assortment of bonus tracks, too! Magic Colors should have come out on Mercury in 1967, but it wasn't to be. Well, better late than never, right? It's fluffy, but fun – with sweet vocals by Leslie and with arrangements by Bob Crewe, Jack Nitzsche, Gamble & Huff, Thom Bell and others. The album tracks include "It's A Happening World", "Magic Colors", "Brink Of Disaster", "I'm Fallin' Down", "To Sir With Love" and more. Includes a whopping 15 bonus singles: "Summer And Sandy", "Small Talk", "I Can't Make It Without You", "Summer Symphony", "One By One", "Wedding Bell Blues" and more. 25 tracks in all! CD

✨✧ Fab 5 Freddy, Grandmaster Caz, Chris Stein, etc.Wild Style – Original Soundtrack ... LP
Animal/Mr Bongo (UK), 1982. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A really great record, and maybe one of the few hip hop soundtracks to get at the real feel of the music on the streets – maybe no surprise, as the film for which it was created did the same thing! This isn't a fluffed-up Hollywood take on hip hop, with mainstream soul thrown into the mix – as the record was put together by Fab 5 Freddy and Chris Stein – the latter of whom really invests in his hip hop cred away from Blondie, and also provides some cool guitar bits and effects in the music too! There's some great freestyle bits and turntable tracks that really get at the underground side of the music that was alive and well at the time – and titles include "Wild Style Theme Rap 1" by Grandmaster Caz & Chris Stein, "Basketball Throwdown" by Cold Crush Bros & The Fantastic Four, "Stoop Rap" by Double Trouble & Rodney Cee, "Rammellzee & Shock Dell at the Amphitheatre" with Grandmixer DST, "Wild Style Subway Rap 2" by Grand Master Caz & Chris Stein, and "Cold Crush Brothers At The Dixie". ✨✧ VariousOriginal Blues/Risque Blues – My Ding A Ling – Original King Recordings ... CD
King/Gusto, Late 40s/Early 50s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Raw, raunchy sounds – all pulled together from a time before soul and rock even existed! Most of the work here is from the classic catalog of King Records – a killer imprint in the postwar R&B market, and a company who wasn't afraid to do what it took to make a knockout record! In the case of these tracks, the singers often hit some fairly suggestive material – often hidden in early 50s innuendo, but barely so – with a vibe that's often nastier than even the most hardcore rockabilly sounds to come! The music here has its roots in blues, but is inflected with plenty of jazz, and the presence of the singers often point the way towards soul music – especially the James Brown crowd that would later rise at the same label. Titles on this volume include "I Like My Baby's Pudding" by Wynonie Harris, "My Natchl Man" by Fluffy Hunter, "Mountain Oysters" by Eddie Davis, "Let Me Be Stay Away From Me" by Freddy King, "Can't Do Sixty No More" by Billy Ward & The Domonies, "My Ding A Ling" by Dave Bartholomew, "Butcher Pete" by Roy Brown, and "Sittin On It All The Time" by Wynonie Harris.
