✨✧ Eric RevisSing Me Some Cry ... CD
Clean Feed (Portugal), 2017. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The bass of Eric Revis sounds better than we ever remember – and that's saying a lot, because we've really liked his other records too! Yet here, it almost feels like Revis is out to re-state himself as a musician – coming on strong with a tone that could put him up there with the giants of earlier years – and beautifully matched with drummer Chad Taylor, who's always been an amazing example of that rare quality of being tight and loose at the same time! Ken Vandermark blows tenor and clarinet – but in a way that really seems to respect the path taken by Revis and Taylor – as does the piano of Kris Davis, which punctuates the sound perfectly. Titles include "Sing Me Some Cry", "PT 44", "Good Company", "Rye Eclipse", "Rumples", and "Drunkard's Lullaby". CD

Avishai CohenInto The Silence ... CD
ECM (Germany), 2016. Used ... $13.99
No silence here – and instead just a warm flow of sound from the trumpet of Avishai Cohen, and his well-matched group – a quintet that also features Bill McHenry on tenor, Yonathan Avishai on piano, Eric Revis on bass, and Nasheet Waits on drums – all players who hit the same sort of laidback, ECM-ish vibe that Cohen's going for on the record! Avishai has this very compressed, economic way of handling his horn – never too overblown, but with this subtle power that kind of swells up slowly, then surprises you – a mode that's sometimes signaled by the piano, but which also sometimes leads first, then pulls the piano in its wake. McHenry finds a place to balance between the two, and titles include "Life & Death", "Dream Like A Child", "Into The Silence", "Quiescence", and "Behind The Broken Glass". CD

Branford Marsalis QuartetFour MFs Playin' Tunes ... CD
Marsalis, 2012. Used ... $7.99
The set definitely lives up to the name here – as the album bristles with plenty of energy, and goes way beyond the singular star power of its leader! Instead, the quartet action is very equally weighted – rhythms as angular as the reeds from Branford – and piano from Joey Calderazzo that really pushes and propels the tunes along with a great sort of energy! Drums are by Justin Faulkner and bass by Eric Revis – two great players who really leap along strongly throughout – using these blocky modes that really make for a refreshing change – and titles include "The Mighty Sword", "Maestra", "Teo", "As Summer Into Autumn Slips", "My Ideal", and "Endymion". Also includes the bonus track "Treat It Gentle". CD

✨✧ Branford Marsalis with Kurt EllingUpward Spiral ... CD
Okeh, 2016. Used ... $8.99
A stunning little record – maybe the best album in years for both Branford Marsalis and singer Kurt Elling! On Elling's part, the record's a real back-to-basics affair – as he sings just with the Marsalis Quartet, at a level that really takes us back to the brilliance of his first few records – with lots of space for the vocals to open up in an amazing way, with that genius for mixing creative wordplay and effortless expression in his vocal inflections! And for Marsalis, there's more of an edge than usual – maybe as the group's driving themselves to give Elling the best format for his performance – especially strong soprano sax lines from Branford, plus piano from Joey Calderazzo, bass from Eric Revis, and drums from Justin Faulkner. Titles include "Blue Gardenia", "West Virginia Rose", "Momma Said", "Cassandra Song", "The Return", "I'm A Fool To Want You", "Practical Arrangement", and "So Tinha De Ser Com Voce". CD

RedmanDare Iz A Darkside ... CD
Rush/Nippon (Japan), 1994. Used ... $8.99
Redman at an early peak – raw cosmic funk-steeped hip hop from the wildly creative, gritty-voiced man himself! Like a lot of the greatest 90s hip hop, there's a strong George Clinton influence to the beats – but the thick atmosphere is really on another level – then and now, there's nothing exactly like Redman's flow, which is crazy and charismatic at the same time. The great Erick Sermon co-produces and probably had a big hand in keeping it funky and from going to far into the murky deep end, it's a straight up classic to this day. Tracks include "Dr Trevis", "Bobyahed2dis", "Journey Throo Da Darkside", "A Million And 1 Buddah Spots", "Noorotic", "Cosmic Slop", "Rockafella (R.I.P.)", "Rockafella", "Can't Wait", "Wuditlooklike", Sooperman Luva II", "We Run N.Y.", "Da Journee", "Slide And Rock On" and more. 19 tracks in all. ✨✧ Ralph McTellAll Things Change – The Transatlantic Anthology 1967 to 1970 ... CD
Transatlantic/Cherry Tree (UK), Late 60s. New Copy 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
Beautiful work from Ralph McTell – a British singer with roots in folk music, but an artist who was already finding his own territory by the time of these albums! Unlike other British folkies of the time, who seemed to be heading towards more ancient territory, and were often trying to sound even more old school in their phrasing – McTell was always trying out something new, and moving more towards some of the singer/songwriter territory that a few key American contemporaries were trying at the time. The set brings together three full albums by Ralph for the Transatlantic label – Eight Frames A Second, Spiral Staircase, and My Side Of Your Window – plus the Ralph McTell Revisited album, which features reworked material, as well as some bonus tracks too – all a fantastic summation of Ralph's early years – a time when he was maybe at his best. 51 tracks in all – with titles that include "Nanna's Song", "The Fairground", "Last Train & Ride", "Michael In The Garden", "Clown", "Girl On A Bicycle", "Father Forgive Them", "Are You Receiving Me", "Bright & Beautiful Things", "Daddy's Here", "Terminus", "Suzanne", "Blues In More Than 12 Bars", and "Kew Gardens". ✨✧ Bob DylanTriplicate (3LP 180 gram vinyl set) ... LP
Columbia, 2017. Used 3LP ... Out Of Stock
Bob Dylan takes on the American songbook once again – revisiting the territory of classic 20th century songwriters that he touched on the Fallen Angels album, but in an overstuffed mode that definitely warrants the Triplicate title! The triple-length format really has Dylan going to town on the material – and maybe doing a lot more than just trying to ape an older singer like Frank Sinatra – as the arrangements are often surprisingly fresh, and almost hit the kind of country/standard mode that Willie Nelson hit with his Stardust recording. In fact, given the rasp and world-heavy tone of Dylan's voice, and the strong use of both acoustic and steel guitar on some of the tunes, the whole thing maybe feels more like a vision of midcentury, seen through a lens that gives the sound of Nashville a lot more importance in the canon. The set was recorded at the Capitol Studios, which seems a great place to capture this vibe – and titles include, not surprisingly, "Stardust", plus "This Nearly Was Mine", "Stormy Weather", "Once Upon A Time", "The Best Is Yet To Come", "As Time Goes By", "Imagination", "Day In Day Out", "There's A Flaw In My Flue", "These Foolish Things", and "You Go To My Head". Charles MingusMingus Revisited (aka Pre-Bird) ... LP
Limelight, 1960. Very Good- Gatefold ... $11.99
An unusual chapter in the label-hopping career of Charles Mingus – a one-off date recorded for Mercury right after Mingus' legendary sessions for Columbia! The format here may well be Mingus' most ambitious to date – as the album features larger groups than before, exploring a range of musical ideas that run from Charles' own highly political expressions of the Civil Rights era to some of his landmark explorations of Duke Ellington! As always, the individual players in the group are given a strong voice in the proceedings – and the record bristles with energy from solos by Ted Curson, Eric Dolphy, Booker Ervin, Jimmy Knepper, Yusef Lateef, and a young Joe Farrell – as well as vocal performances by Lorraine Cousins, who sings on the classic "Weird Nightmare" and the haunting "Eclipse". A tremendous record throughout – filled with life, imagination, and boundless creativity – with titles that include "Mingus Fingus no. 2", "Weird Nightmare", "Eclipse", "Bemoanable Lady", "Half Mast Inhibition", and "Prayer for Passive Resistance". Keith HudsonPick A Dub (expanded edition) ... CD
17 North Parade, 1974. New Copy ... $13.99 15.98
The crowning achievement of the legendary Keith Hudson – a landmark album of instrumental dub that started out in very small circulation, but soon grew to become one of the most important albums of the genre! The sound here is spare, stark, and simple – but in the best way possible – as Hudson takes the music right down to its core, yet seems to create even more powerful flow in the process – revising the 60s Jamaican love of American soul into a more cosmic mode for the next decade – but all with a raw approach that makes each element come across with a great deal of focus. Titles include "Black Heart", "Pick A Dub", "Don't Move", "Blood Brother", "Michael Talbot Affair", "In The Rain", and "Satia". Also comes with the bonus related Pick A Vocal album – with vocals by Agustus Pablo, Horace Andy, and Delroy Wilson – alongside some more instrumental tunes. Tracks include "Still Water", "Addis Ababa", "Fight On Fight On", "I'm All Right", "Depth Charge", and "Don't Think About Me". CD

✨✧ Johnny Dyani With Witchdoctor's Son & Dudu PukwanaRejoice/Together ... CD
Cadillac (UK), 1978/1979. New Copy 2 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A pair of albums from the legendary Johnny Dyani – packaged here in one great little set! Rejoice features searing live work from Johnny Dyani – a set that has the bassist opening up strongly in a trio with Mongezi Feza on trumpet and Okey Temiz on drums and percussion! Feza sounds even better here than usual – blowing these long, inventive solo lines that match the work of Ted Curson for 70s fire – really spurred on by Okey's creative changes, into a soulful space that may well be some of Mongezi's most spiritually expressive of the 70s! Dyani's bass is strong, and ever-present – never needing to dominate, but always felt as this rich pulse – and powerful melodic element at just the right moments. Titles include "Mad High", "Makaya Makaya", "Pukwana" and "Imbomgolo". CD also features an unreleased track from the same performance – the 20 minute "Mad High Revisited". Together is a record that really gets back to Johnny Dyani's roots in South African jazz! Although Dyani and his expatriates in the Blue Notes helped give London a new sound of avant jazz expression in the 70s, the music here returns to the warmer melodic style of their early 60s days – with loping rhythms that draw on regional tradition, and soulful interplay between the alto of Dudu Pukwana, tenor of Peter Shimmy Radise, and keyboards from Dyani – who shifts his instrument for this special recording! The group also features use of guitar, congas, whistles, and a South American harp – used in rhythmic ways that pulsate warmly – on titles that include "Kalahari", "Tula Tula", "High Priest", "Johnny's Kwela", and "Together".
