✨✧ El Gran ComboAcangana ... LP
Gema, 1963. Fair ... Out Of Stock
Great early work from El Gran Combo – already grooving with a really unique sort of sound, one that comes from mixing saxes with trumpets – in a style that's a bit different than other small combos of the time! Piano is handled by Rafael Ithier, who also directs the group – and vocals are by Pellin Rodriguez and Andy Montanez, who often sing together in choro formation. Titles include "Mima", "Acangana", "Lo Que Te Gusta", "Remigio Tombe", "Santigualo", "Asalto Navideno", "El Pirulero", and "Gracias Mi Amor". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Andres Y Sus EstrellasAndres Y Sus Estrellas ... LP
El Palmas (Spain), Mid 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Rare work from the obscure Andres and his combo – one of those Venezuelan salsa treasure that never saw that much exposure up here back in the day – different than Colombian and Puerto Rican records that formed a much bigger part of the New York scene! Yet the vibe here is every bit as great as any of those albums – a rock-solid interpretation of the best salsa modes of the time, but in a way that's nicely fresh, compared to some of the bigger American Latin labels – maybe a bit more playful in approach, with plenty of lively numbers throughout. Vocals are by Nano Gran and Yira – and titles include "Canuto", "Llanto De Luna", "Rico Y Sabroso", "Linda Caraquena", "La Mazucamba", "El Jibarito", "Yo La Mata", and "Condicion". Alessandro AlessandroniFormula 1 Nell'Inferno Del Grand Prix ... CD
Beat (Italy), 1970. Used ... $16.99
One of the grooviest racing soundtracks we've ever heard – a set that's a lot more funky than some of the better-known racetrack film scores that were coming into the racks during the late 60s! The vibe here is almost a bit like some of the sound library material of Alessandro Alessandroni – lots of great melodic elements, wrapped around rhythms that are nice and slinky on the slower moments, and downright funky on the faster ones – mostly instrumental, but with just a bit of vocals at points from I Cantori Moderni – that very cool harmony group that Alessandroni used on many recordings. The instrumentation is never too complex, and the focus feels more small combo than some of the larger orchestrations on Italian scores at the time – served up here in an assortment of 20 tracks from the film! Mongo SantamariaEl Pussy Cat (portrait cover) ... LP
Columbia, 1965. Very Good ... $9.99
A really pivotal album in the career of Mongo Santamaria – one that has Mongo stripping down the groove, kicking up some jazz, and mixing together soulful styles that brought him to the top of the Latin crowd of the 1960s! There's a tightness here that goes beyond any of Santamaria's previous albums – a no-nonsense approach that makes for some incredibly hard-hitting numbers – heavy on the conga, but also featuring strong piano lines from Rodger Grand, trumpet from Marty Sheller, flute and tenor from Hubert Laws, and alto sax and baritone from Bobby Capers! This small combo provides pretty much all of the instrumentation for the record – and there's no added tricks or gimmicks, just hard-grooving Latin jazz at its best! Titles include "El Pussy Cat", "Together", "Black Eyed Peas", "Ritmo Negro", "Sarai", "Hammer Head", and "Afro Lypso". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Stefon HarrisAfrican Tarantella – Dances With Duke ... CD
Blue Note, 2006. Used ... Out Of Stock
A bold new chapter in the career of vibraphonist Stephon Harris – and proof that he's one of the most amazing players of his generation, one who's always growing into new sounds and styles! Despite the "Duke" in the title here, the work isn't a simple homage to the classics of Ellington – and instead, it uses some lesser-known themes by Duke as vehicles for new waves of color, sound, and tone from Harris – scored in the same soulful way as his brilliant work on Grand Unification Theory from a few years back. The style here is hardly Ellington, and is more a shimmering mix of small combo jazz and strings – headed up mostly by Harris' vibes and marimba, but also featuring Steve Turre on trombone, Anne Drummond on flute, Greg Tardy on clarinet, and Xavier Davis on piano. 3 tracks here are from Harris' own The Gardner Meditations – "Memoirs Of A Frozen Summer", "African Tarantella", and "Dancing Enigma" – and Ellington titles include "Thanks For The Beautiful Land On The Delta", "Portrait Of Wellman Braud", "Bourbon Street Jingling Jollies", "Single Petal Of A Rose", and "Sunset & The Mocking Bird". ✨✧ Grant StewartGrant Stewart Plays The Music Of Duke Ellington & Billy Strayhorn ... CD
Sharp Nine, 2009. Used ... Out Of Stock
Tenorist Grant Stewart takes on the music of Ellington and Strayhorn – but in a sweet small combo mode that's nicely swinging, and a lot more relaxed than the standard Ellington mode! The tunes have a strong focus on Stewart's rich tenor tone – blown in an easygoing, open way – but with a great degree of sharpness, too – a rare blend that's made Grant one of the leading tenor talents of his generation. Rhythm is never too intrusive, and handled by Tardo Hammer on piano, Paul Gill on bass, and Joe Farnsworth on drums – on titles that include "The Feeling Of Jazz", "Raincheck", "Angelica", "Tonight I Shall Sleep", "Star Crossed Lovers", and "Something To Live For". ✨✧ Grant GreenMatador ... CD
Blue Note, 1965. Used ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic mid 60s album from Grant Green – but one that never got its due originally, because it was unreleased at the time – and didn't come out until a Japanese version in the late 70s! Despite that oddly long gap, Matador is truly one Grant's best ever records – a really inventive session that goes way past his standard soul jazz roots – and which really shows the guitarist stretching out towards future styles of jazz! The session's a spare quartet date – with Green's guitar playing modal grooves over rhythm by by his incredible combo – with Bob Cranshaw on bass, Elvin Jones on drums and the incomparable McCoy Tyner on piano – blocking out bold changes that really drive the record strongly. Cuts are long, and there's a freewheeling quality to the material that's only ever matched by some of the Grant Green/Larry Young sessions from the same time – especially the Street Of Dreams Record. Titles include "Matador", "Bedouin", Green Jeans", and a killer version of "My Favorite Things", done in a very Coltrane-esque style. CD

✨✧ Michel LegrandRCA Years ... CD
BMG/RCA (Japan), Early 70s. Used ... Out Of Stock
A great little look at Michel Legrand's years with RCA Records – a time when the famous French soundtrack composer was returning to some of his roots in jazz, and also providing backdrops for some singers as well! The scope of work here is really great – from hard-swinging big band material to smaller combo jazz, to vocal numbers that really show the warmth and feeling of Legrand's lyrics as well as his music. Most of the work here has been out of print for years, even on CD, and the package does a great job of mixing up the modes with a sense of fullness that goes even beyond the regular albums. Titles include "What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life" and "Sweet Gingerbread Man" with Jack Jones, "I Will Wait For You" and "One At A Time" with Lena Horne, and "The Windmills Of Your Mind", "Snowbird Serenade", "The Summer Knows", "Watch What Happens", "The Saddest Thing Of All", and "Splittons" as jazz numbers by Legrand. Red Coach/Octave (Japan), 1972. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A lost funky classic from the Kool & The Gang side of the universe – cut by a group we've only seen on this one and only record – which was recorded for one of the sub-labels of De-Lite Records, home to the main Gang! There's clearly some mentorship taking place here – as the group works with producer Gene Redd, of K&TG fame – and they also serve up their own takes on some of the best early funky tracks of that group – while also using that inspiration to then move into some heavy jams of their own – all with razor-sharp instrumentation, but a sound that's still plenty raw as well! This maturation of the funky 45 underground is still in its very early stages here – no disco touches or commercial overproduction – which really makes the group shine on cuts that include "Gold Smoke", "Funky Granny", "Who's Gonna Take The Weight", "Mama Said-Papa Said", and "Funky Gene-Ra-Tion". CD features some great bonus cuts – "The Bump (parts 1 & 2)", "Juice It Up (parts 1 & 2)", and the tracks "Get Down Get Stank" and "I Like What I Like", both recorded by the related Hot Line combo. Cosmic Analog EnsembleLes Grand Vacances ... LP
Jakarta (Germany), 2024. New Copy ... $25.99 28.99
The group's no ensemble, but they're definitely analog – as the one-man combo Charif Megarbane handles a whole host of cool electric sources for the music – a mix of mellotron, Rhodes, Wurlitzer, Farfisa, Moog, and other keys – mixed with an electric koto, flute, vibes, theremin, and field recordings too! There's also key use of acoustic guitar, which warms up and humanizes the sound wonderfully – as do the French vocals, which appear from time to time, and make the whole thing sparkle like some underground Parisian project from years back – almost building a bridge from the 70s Saravah scene forward to the music of Stereolab and Laetitia Sadier. The album's every bit as great as those two references would imply – and titles include "The Patterns Of A Hand", "Ainsi Souffle Le Vent", "Sens Dessus Dessous", "Passe Compose", "Les Orpailleurs", and "Octopolis". Grant GreenLatin Bit (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Blue Note, 1962. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $27.99 38.99
A really fantastic record from Blue Note guitar genius Grant Green – and a set that's got a sound that goes way past his goofy look on the cover! The title's a bit right – in that there's something of a Latin vibe going on, with more percussion than usual in a small group – but the sound is also not straight New York Latin, with looser currents that are borrowed a bit from bossa nova, but also given a fluid soul jazz spin! There's maybe a slight touch of some of Cal Tjader's records from the period, but with more of the edge that we love on his guitar – served up in a combo that features the mighty Willie Bobo on drums, Johnny Acea on piano, Wendell Marshall on bass, Patato Valdez on congas, and Garvin Masseux on chekere. Together, the group makes for a very hip set of tracks that includes "Tico Tico", "Mama Inez", "Besame Mucho", and "Mambo Inn". LP, Vinyl record album

AJP/Now Again, 1970. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $30.99 34.99
One of the most tripped-out albums of funk you'll ever buy – a rare treasure with a very unusual history! The Stark Reality were a cool little combo formed to work on public television in Boston in the late 60s – and the combo featured some heavy guitars, fuzzed-up vibes, and some monster percussion laid out in tight bass and drum rhythms that were years ahead of their time! The group recorded one rare album – ostensibly a children's record, but based around old compositions by Hoagy Carmichael, completely pulled apart, sliced up, overly harmonized, and spat out into wild funky tunes that bear no resemblance to their originals! John Abercrombie handles the guitar, Monty Stark delivers the vibes and vocals – and titles include "Rocket Ship", "Shooting Star", "Bustin Out Of Doors", "Comrades", "Swing High", "Cooking", "Grandfather Clock", "The Old Prospector", "The Whale", "Junkman's Song", and "Merry Go Round". ✨✧ Grant GreenVisions ... LP
Blue Note, 1971. Sealed ... Out Of Stock
A wicked late Blue Note album from Grant Green – quite different than his smaller combo work from the early years, and done with some great larger arrangements that feature some ultra-hip vibes from the legendary Billy Wooten! Wooten's as great here as on his famous work with the Ninteenth Whole, and his vibes bring a nice edge to the record – ringing out in bold chromatic tones behind Green's guitar – amidst some warm electric backings that feature keyboards from Emmanuel Riggins, drums from Idris Muhammad, and congas from Ray Armando. Wade Marcus helped a bit on the music, and there's some tracks that definitely show his sophisti-soul touches – and the whole thing's almost got a CTI-funk sort of feel overall – with a great undercurrent of soul, no matter what the choice of material. Titles include a very groovy version of "Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is" – plus "Cantaloupe Woman", "Blues For Abraham", "Never Can Say Goodbye", "Maybe Tomorrow", "Love On A Two Way Street", and "We've Only Just Begun". ✨✧ VariousEccentric Soul – The Big Mack Label ... CD
Numero, 1960s/Early 70s. Used ... Out Of Stock
An incredible look at an obscure Detroit soul label – a tiny little company, but home to some really great funk and soul! The Big Mack label ran somewhat sporadically through the 60s and into the early 70s – but during that time, it managed to cut some incredible tunes with a really unique feel – work that had a rougher edge than most of the Detroit soul on the bigger labels and indies – often with an earthy quality that's miles and miles from Motown! Label owner Ed McCoy had a great ear for male singers, instrumental combos, and vocal groups – but as the 60s rolled on, he also picked up a few hip female acts as well – and throughout the whole stretch, he had a way of producing a tune that we can only describe best as slightly messed up – a sound that's often slightly tripped up, oddly spacious, and which makes the elements of the music fall into each other with a crashingly intense kind of sound! Far from being a mess, this approach only seems to cook things up more – giving an edge to tracks that might have sounded more lackluster with conventional production – and further electrifying these obscure utterings from the Detroit underground. As with other Numero collections, the work here is wonderfully worth discovering – and presented with full notes, photos, and a history of the label. CD features 19 tracks that include "Bui Bui" by L Hollis & The Mackadoos, "Get It Right" by Soul President, "Crooked Woman" by Edd Henry, "Fever" by Essence, "If You Feel It" by Ms Tyree Sugar Jones, "The Feeling Is Mutual" by Manhattens, "I See Her Pretty Face" by The Grand Prix's, "Let's Give Our Love A Try" by Mae Young, "I'll Be On My Way" by Bob & Fred, "Mini Skirt" by The Sleepwalkers, "Monkey Time Shine" by L Hollis & The Mackadoos, "The Man Puts Sugar In My Soul" by Mae Young, "You Drive Me Crazy" by The Grand Prix's, "Got To Have It" by Soul President, and "Your Replacement Is Here" by Edd Henry. Colemine, 2021. New Copy Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Deeply funky work from one of the hippest Hammond organ combos around – just a trio, but one that's able to pack the punch of so many much larger groups! Delvon Lamarr took all the right lessons from Hammond heroes of the past – not that he's copying anyone's style, because he isn't – but he really knows the right way to make the instrument move between rhythm and melody, solo and groove – as he works here in ultra-tight formation with funky drummer Grant Schroff and guitarist Jimmy James! James gets in a few great licks of his own – and like Delvon, really knows how to move between staying on the rhythm, and getting loose – which makes for a wonderful album, through, filled with stone cold originals that include "Hole In One", "Call Your Mom", "Girly Face", "From The Streets", "I Don't Know", "Fo Sho", and "Aces". Limelight/EmArcy, 1959. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A great session from 1959 – one that features John Coltrane playing tenor in a combo that's billed as being led by altoist Cannonball Adderley – but which is really more of a Miles Davis combo, without Miles! The set was recorded in Chicago when both were stopping through the city with Miles Davis' combo at the time – and since the rhythm section includes Wynton Kelly on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Jimmy Cobb on drums – the album's essentially a Kind Of Blue-era Miles album, recorded without Miles on trumpet, and grooving in a slightly more soul-based Adderley mode! Given the presence of Coltrane, there's a bit less of the gutbuckety soul jazz that Cannon was cutting in his own Quintet – but that's more than ok with us, as the Coltrane solos more than make up for that difference! The set's got 2 great originals by Coltrane – "The Sleeper" and "Grand Central" – plus the cuts "Wabash" and "Limehouse Blues". CD

Blue Stars/Henri SalvadorJazz In Paris – Pardon My English/Henri Salvador Plays The Blues ... CD
Universal (France), 1956. Used ... $5.99
Excellent vocal jazz from postwar Paris! The Blue Stars were a legendary combo that were led by Blossom Dearie, and which featured a host of great vocal talents that would later go onto form groups like Les Double Six or The Swingle Singers, including Mimi Perrin and Christine Legrand, as well as instrumental jazz artists like Fats Sadi and Roger Guerin, who are doing some rare vocalization here. The first 4 tracks on the set are pulled from a 1956 ep – and it features the group on the tracks "Jumpin At The Woodside", "C'est La Vie", "Broadway At Basin Street", and "Grapevine". The next 12 tracks are from the Pardon My English LP – which has the group down to a sextet, working without Dearie, in a groovy accented English vocal style that's a direct precursor of the vocalese grooving of Les Double Six. Titles on that set include "Small Talk", "Move", "Did You Close Your Eyes?", and "Promises & Lies". The last 3 tracks on the set are a bit different – featuring vocals and guitar by Henri Salvador, with backing on bass and drums. The style of Salvador's work is still similar, though – way more vocalese than the "blues" in the title would make you expect – and the tracks are lifted from a rare Fontana ep-only release that was recorded in the same year. Titles include "Don't Blame Me", "Salvador Plays The Blues", and "Stompin At The Savoy". CD

One of the most open-ended Tal Farlow albums for Verve – and a wonderfully laidback set that lets him open up with that incredible tone, taking the electric guitar to a whole new place in jazz, and showing that the instrument has volumes to speak in both phrasing and tone! The group's a quartet – with Gerald Wiggins on piano, Ray Brown on bass, and Chico Hamilton on drums – an interesting combo that swings with almost a bit more bite than you'd hear on some other Farlow albums, a sound that's every bit as striking as the album's unique cover image. Tal's sound is tremendous, and right out front in the mix – and titles include "And She Remembers Me", "Little Girl Blue", "Have You Met Miss Jones", and "Tal's Blues". CD

Verve/Elemental (Spain), 1964. New Copy (reissue)... About December 1, 2023 (delayed)
A very different record than the first collaboration between Stan Getz & Joao Gilberto – but that's also one of the things that makes it great! The album's more of a split LP than a shared one – as side one features a live performance from the great mid 60s Stan Getz quartet that featured Gary Burton on vibes – a wonderfully cool combo that was very under-documented on record, and which makes a key appearance here. The combination of Burton's vibes and Stan's tenor is pure genius – a sound that's got all the subtle hues and cool colors of the Getz bossa recordings, but which is quite different overall. Stan's tone is amazing on these tunes – and titles include "Here's That Rainy Day", "Tonight I Shall Sleep With A Smile On My Face", "Grandfather's Waltz", and "Stan's Blues". Side two features Joao Gilberto without Stan – playing in a very groovy trio that's more straight bossa than most of his other US recordings – cool small combo grooving that's totally great! The lineup features Gilberto on guitar and vocals, Keeter Betts on bass, and Helcio Milito on drums – all working in a sweetly grooving mode on titles that include "Samba De Minha Terra", "Meditation", "Bim Bom", "Rosa Moreno", and "O Pato". Regrooved (Netherlands), 1976. New Copy Gatefold ... $37.99 40.99
Never-heard live work from the legendary Junie Morrison – a funky legend who worked both in the Ohio Players and in the P-Funk empire of George Clinton – heard here in a smoking live setting in Michigan, right around the time of his classic solo records for Westbound! The format is great – really open and freewheeling, and nicely different than some of Junie's records in the studio – as Junie works with the Crowd Pleasers group, in a blistering blend of funk, soul, and jazz – with solos that evoke some of the latter, and which remind us of the unearthed Lyman Woodard concerts from around the same time! Tracks are mostly nice and long, very jamming – and the small combo vibe is a really different change from some of the arena funk of the period. Titles include a great version of Junie's classic "Granny's Funky Rolls Royce" – plus "Super J", "Tight Rope/Super Groupie", "Shakey Ground", "Fopp", "Musical Son", "Oh Me Oh My", "Surrender", and an Ohio Players medley of "Pain/Cookies Will Get You/Pleasure/Ecstasy". Gregory PorterLiquid Spirit (3LP set – with bonus tracks) ... LP
Blue Note, 2013. New Copy 3LPs (reissue)... $62.99 69.99
Gregory Porter arrives on Blue Note Records – and the result is Porter's most fully-formed set so far – just the kind of album that will push him firmly into the limelight – a place that we've felt he's deserved for quite a few years! Porter's a hell of a singer, and a hell of a songwriter too – and although his roots are in jazz, he's got a rare ability to step between genres with plenty of soul – a special space that belongs to a very rare few – like Nina Simone, Bill Withers, Roberta Flack, or Gil Scott-Heron! Gregory's voice is amazing, his lyrics are both personal and pointed – and he does so much here with so little, the album should be handed out to the hundreds of mis-directed vocalists who think that a few extra tweaks in the studio is all they really need. Most numbers just feature small combo backing, with wonderfully warm piano from Chip Crawford – and the whole thing's got a timeless feel that makes us think this is the beginning of a rich new season for Porter. Titles include "Free", "Water Under Bridges", "Lonesome Lover", "Liquid Spirit", "No Love Dying", "Brown Grass", "When Love Was King", and "Wind Song". This great 3LP deluxe version features special guest bonus tracks on the fifth side – Water Under The Bridge" with Laura Mvula, "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" with Jamie Cullum and "Grandma's Hands" with Ben L'Oncle Soul – plus Rainer & Grimm, Claptone, 20syl, St Germain and Knuckle G remixes on the sixth side! Stanley TurrentineUp At Minton's – Vols 1 & 2 ... CD
Blue Note, 1961. Used 2 CDs ... $13.99
A fantastic early record from tenor giant Stanley Turrentine – a set that's completely hard-hitting, and which has a very different vibe than the sweeter sets he'd cut later in the 70s! Instead, this record is pure hardbop all the way through – with Turrentine matching labelmate Hank Mobley for depth of tone and freshness of ideas – stretching out on these long, live tracks with a very cool combo that also features Grant Green on guitar and Horace Parlan on piano – both of whom are superb, and hit some real Blue Note heights on the set. Parlan brings this sinister edge to some of the best tunes, and Green's guitar rings out with these fantastically soulful chromes – providing a great balance to the deep runs that Stanley takes on the tenor. This double-length package brings together volumes 1 and 2 of the LP releases – and titles include a long moody reading of "Yesterdays", plus the hard bop original "Stanley's Time" – as well as the tracks "Later at Minton's", "Come Rain or Come Shine", "Love for Sale" and "Summertime". Takt/Sony (Japan), 1967. Used Gatefold ... $29.99
One of Sadao Watanbe's excellent late 60s bossa albums – beautifully rich, but mellow readings of bossa nova numbers – in a way that takes music that had already been introduced to Japan a few years earlier, and gives it even wider exposure with Sadao's wonderfully soulful, jazz-based approach! Sadao plays both flute and alto sax – and backing is from a small combo that mixes in Brazilian-styled guitar and percussion next to the piano from Masabumi Kikuchi and drums from Masahiko Togashi – who you'll know from other Japanese jazz of the time! Watanabe's reeds have a raspy, off-kilter quality that's almost more human than many Brazilian jazz efforts of the time – and titles include "O Grande Amor", "Felicidade", "Here's That Rainy Day", "Agua De Beber", "White Wave", "From Russia With Love" and "So Danca Samba". One of the hippest, most righteous albums ever cut by pianist Jessica Williams – a set where it feels like all of her ideas come together perfectly, and are carried forward by a wonderful lineup of players! The group is small, but there's a very large feel to the whole thing – such that there's moments when we have to remind ourselves that this is still a small combo, even if Williams' music make things feel larger and more ambitious – a lineup that includes the great Eddie Henderson on trumpet, plus Jim Grantham on tenor, Kim Stone on bass, Henry Robinette on guitar, and Dave Tucker on drums. Williams is superb throughout on piano – and titles include "To The Children Of The Future", "The Demise Of Armored Man", "Weapon Of Truth", "Up The Entropy Slope", and "Longing". Lester YoungPres/Pres Is Blue/Just You Just Me (3CD set) ... CD
Charlie Parker/Ultra Vybe (Japan), Early 50s. New Copy 3CDs ... $18.99 23.99
A trio of Charlie Parker label releases from Lester Young – all served up in a single package! First up is Pres – rare live material from Lester Young – one of the first albums to offer up Pres in such a setting, although without some of the details and notes of other records of this nature! The vibe is definitely "live", and like some of the other Charlie Parker label releases, the record's a good document of a side of a key soloist in a setting that's different from his studio material – as the tunes are all quite long, and with a freer, looser sense of improvisation than on some of his studio sides. There's a trumpeter who gets in a lot of licks on the set (Roy Eldridge?) – and titles include "Destination Moon", "I Cover The Waterfront", "Sunday", "Lester Leaps In", and "Blues". Pres Is Blue is a 60s album, but one that features early 50s material recorded at the Savoy in New York – a live date that features tenor genius Lester Young blowing with an unusual combo that includes Kenny Drew on piano, Aaron Bell on bass, and Jo Jones on drums – plus the lesser-known Jesse Drake on trumpet! The tunes are standards, but opened up by Lester with a heck of a lot of warmth – on titles that include "Stardust", "Mean To Me", "Pennies From Heaven", and "Three Little Words". Just You Just Me is late 40s live work from Lester Young, recorded right on the scene in New York, likely at the Royal Roost – and presented as one of those key bebop documents that came out on the Charlie Parker label in the 60s! As the rest of those, the approach here isn't that of Verve or Norgran, but is a great illustration of the artist at work on the scene – on titles that include "DB Blues", "Be Bop Boogie", "Just You Just Me", "I Cover The Waterfront", "Sunday", and "These Foolish Things". Dub Store (Japan), 1960s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $35.99 39.99
Fantastic sounds from the years before reggae became the international sound of Jamaica – music from the island nation's jazz scene, which was at the crossroads of so many different styles of music – jazz from the north, Latin rhythms from Cuba and Puerto Rico, and a fair bit of other Caribbean sounds too – all of which filter through the wonderful collection of music on the set! The title breaks down the different genres featured – but there's often a surprisingly unified feel to the whole record too – one that stands partly as a testament to the musical strengths of all the performers involved! In the days before Trojan and Studio One, Federal Records was an important Jamaican label – and did an especially great job of capturing some of the sounds that were part of that nation's club culture and resorts in the 60s. Titles include "Angelima" and "Like Falling In Love" by Ernest Ranglin, "Profile Cha Cha" and "Rhumbina" by Cecil Lloyd & The Starline Troubadors, "Estrellita" and "I Love Paris" by The Lennie Hibbert Combo, "Tis Wonderful" by Eric Grant, "Linstead Market" by Baba Motta & Ernest Ranglin, "Wheel & Turn Me" by Bertie King, "Go Fife Go" by Count Owen, "Mango Walk" by Bertie King & Ernest Ranglin, "String Of Pearls" by Auldey Williams & His Orchestra, "Solas Market" by Baba Motta, and "Monday Monday" by Winston Turner Quintet. Mercury/Verve, 1959. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
LP, Vinyl record album

A trio of modern talents, working beautifully together on a set of extended live tracks! The group features guitar from Peter Bernstein, Hammond from Larry Goldings, and drums from Bill Stewart – coming together in ways that remind us of the hipper side of 60s organ combos – those moments when Grant Green and Larry Young really opened things up with a long-flowing groove! There's still a nice undercurrent of soul in the mix, but the rhythms are relatively free and unfettered too – moving forth with energy that might be called modal by some, but which is even less constricted by a simple tag like that – more just pure, beautiful waves of sound from both the organ and guitar. Burning work from Lonnie Smith – one of the few players from the 60s Hammond generation who can still grab our ears as strongly as ever! Over the past few decades, Smith's developed a sound that's even freer than before – but still equally groovy – a gliding, open approach to organ jazz that's almost brought in some pages from the Larry Young book, but still comes off with all the swing and soul that Lonnie brought to his best early sides on Blue Note! This session's a brilliant trio date – just Smith's Hammond, the guitar of Jonathan Kreisberg, and drums of Jamire Williams – a wonderful combo who soar beautifully together – hitting modes that remind us of Larry Young/Grant Green collaborations at some points, and Don Patterson/Pat Martino grooves at others. Smith's got a great ear for bottom tones here – and even at quieter points, manages to get our speakers bumping on the shelves – a true testament to the richness of sound you'll hear on cuts that include "Sweet & Lovely", "Spiral", "Beehive", "Sukiyaki", "Frame For The Blues", and "Mellow Mood". Columbia/Lonehill (Spain), 1960/1961. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
Some of the most soulful jazz ever recorded for Columbia Records – 3 albums worth of material from the combo of drummer Dave Bailey! Bailey's probably best known for his work in the Gerry Mulligan group, but for a brief time at the start of the 60s he stepped out as a leader – working with a focus and intensity that easily matched the best hard boppers on Blue Note or Prestige! These 3 records for Columbia are all amazing sets that we'd rank with some of our favorite jazz from the time – razor-sharp records that have a really earthy finish, and which bring out some of the best hardbop work on record from horn soloists Curtis Fuller, Clark Terry, Junior Cook, Charlie Rouse, and Bill Hardman – all of whom really catch fire under Bailey's guidance! But even above the great horn work on the albums, we really have to note the piano – as Horace Parlan plays on 2 of the albums, easily matching his Blue Note classics, and Billy Gardner follows up on the last set – working with a low low bottom that we love from his sides with Lou Donaldson. Bassists are Peck Morrison and Ben Tucker – and titles include "Slop Jah", "Little Old Mongoose", "Blues For JP", "One Foot In The Gutter", "Sandu", "Two Feet In The Gutter", "Lady Iris B", "Coffee Walk", and "Brownie Speaks". And if 3 albums' worth of material isn't enough, the CD also features 3 more tunes from Bailey's rare Jazztime session with Grant Green and Frank Hayes – "Reaching Out", "Our Miss Brooks", and "One For Elena". 16 tracks in all – most of them quite long! A pair of records from this great CTI Records group – plus bonus tracks too! Fuse One is tight funky fusion from a masterful collective – a great supergroup from the late electric years of the CTI label! The combo features Joe Farrell on tenor, Ronnie Foster and Don Grusin on keyboards, John McLaughlin and Larry Coryell on guitars, Stanley Clarke on bass, and Lenny White, Tony Williams, and Ndugu Chancler on drums – all top-shelf players, but artists who also really respect the vision of the whole project – and allow the grooves to develop without too much competition or overblown modes! The keyboards and guitar are a great match with Farrell's always-great lines on tenor – and titles include "Grand Prix", "Sunshine Lady", "To Whom All Things Concern", "Double Steal", "Waterside", and "Taxi Blues". Silk is the second album of funky fusion from this all-star CTI group that includes Stanley Turrentine, Stanley Clarke, Ndugu, Tom Brown, Eric Gale, Ronnie Foster, and George Benson! The ensemble come together for a great set of laidback fusion tracks that groove with a nice soulful undercurrent – surprisingly fresh, and not nearly as slick as you'd expect from the date of the session – showing that the original open-ended CTI vibe could still be strongly alive on the right records! Tracks have a great mix of acoustic and electric touches – and although Stanley Clarke was the musical director of the album, the whole thing's clearly a group effort. ✨✧ JunieFunky Worm – Live at Dooley's 1976 ... LP
Regrooved (Netherlands), 1976. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
✨✧ Nineteenth WholeSmilin' ... CD
Eastbound/Westbound (UK), 1972. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of the sweetest little jazz funk albums of the early 70s – and a masterful blend of vibes, guitar, and organ from this legendary Indianapolis combo! The group are probably best known for their backing work behind Grant Green on some of his funky Blue Note sides – or for vibes player Billy Wooten, who leads the group, and has had a huge influence on his own these days – but even if you've never heard of them, the record will grab you right away – as it's got a sinister funky groove that few other groups could hope to match! There's a really unique blend of vibes, guitar, and organ going on here – and although the record does have a bit of vocals, the main focus here is on the instrumentation – which jams together in ways that are unlike most other funk combos of the time, including a good number of the group's contemporaries at Westbound! Sweet original tracks include "Monkey Hips 'n Rice", "Looking Through The Windows", and "Dark Clouds Risin", plus a stellar cover of "Slippin' Into Darkness". CD

✨✧ Novi SingersBossa Nova/Torpedo ... CD
Polskie Nagrania (Poland), 1967/1970. Used ... Out Of Stock
2 incredible records – back to back on one CD! Bossa Nova is a landmark record in the European jazz scene of the 60s – an incredibly hip batch of tracks from the Novi Singers, a Polish vocal group whose sound was warm, wonderful, and very very groovy! The set took their cue from American and French vocalese combos of earlier years, but worked in a manner that was infused with some of the cooler trends that were moving through Europe's postwar jazz scene – including modal grooving, free-thinking solos, and even a love of Brazilian rhythms, which shows up clearly in this set! Backing is by a core jazz combo, but also augmented with strings – which gives the album a shimmer, floating quality that we really love. Titles include "Gogo", "Krol Salomon", "Tanczace Orzechy", "Pyzate Sloneczniki", "Zolty Slon", and "Brownie". Torpedo follows Bossa Nova – and really opens up the band's style! The record's got a groovily swinging approach that seems partly influenced by soundtracks of the time, but which also really pushes the vocal style into other realms – some of them sweeter, some of them harder, all of them a darn sight more compelling than work American groups were doing at the time! Titles on that set include "Quartus", "Torpedo", "Misfit", "Cos Specjalnego", "Hurry Hurry", and "Psychologicznie-Fizjologicznie". The whole CD's got 25 tracks – and it's a real treat! CD

✨✧ Boz ScaggsMy Time/Slow Dancer ... CD
Columbia/BGO (UK), 1972/1974. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A pair of early Boz Scaggs albums – back to back on a single set! My Time is Boz Scaggs at the height of his early powers – still very much in the best blue-eyed soul style that first got him noticed by CBS, but also working with a stronger, richer, prouder sound that's really great! A number of the tracks on the set were recorded in Muscle Shoals, with superb small combo soul backing that Boz seems to respond to tremendously well – hitting a mode that's somewhere between Al Green and Van Morrison, with vocals that are simply mindblowing, and extraordinarily soulful. The rest of the set was recorded in San Francisco, and has a similarly freewheeling sound to Boz debut for CBS – with some great backing vocals by Linda Tillery and Dorothy Morrison as well. Titles include "Dinah Flo", "Slowly In The West", "Full Lock Power Slide", "Old Time Lovin", "Might Have To Cry", "Hello My Lover", "He's A Fool For You", and "Freedom For The Stallion". Slow Dancer is one of Boz Scaggs most soulful albums – thanks to production from Johnny Bristol, and arrangements from HB Barnum! Titles include "Slow Dancer", "I Got Your Number", "Hercules", "Take It For Granted", and "Pain Of Love". CD

✨✧ VariousIt's A Beautiful Day – Soft Rock & Sunshine Pop From Peru 1971 to 1976 ... LP
Munster (Spain), Early 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A really great chapter in the rock scene in Peru – a shift to more laidback styles in the early 70s, after an initial wave of beat group and psych combos in the 60s – all served up here in a really well-done collection! You might already know the music of the scene's legendary We All Together, but there's plenty more going on here than just them – an array of groups who are working on the warmer, more well-produced side of the spectrum – but in a way that's a lot more stripped-down than California studio productions of the time! The music here might feel a bit like early recordings or demos for The Raspberries, or Beach Boys albums like Sunflower or Surf's Up – but not in any sort of copycat way, just in the quality of the songwriting and presentation. Titles include "Teimpo En El Sol" by Tarkus, "Guess I'm Going Away" by Cerro Verde, "The World It's Getting Worst" by Monik, "We Wish To Be Listened" by Illicit, "It's A Sin To Go Away" by We All Together, "Carino Grande" by Zulu, "Seabird" by Innovations, and "Estoy Brillando" by FE 59. ✨✧ Fuse OneFuse One ... LP
CTI, 1981. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Tight funky fusion from a masterful collective – a great supergroup from the late electric years of the CTI label! ✨✧ Charlie ParkerCharlie Parker Quartet (Jazz Heritage pressing) ... CD
Clef/Jazz Heritage, Late 40s/Early 50s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Charlie Parker recorded in a number of different modes for Norman Granz and Verve Records – but small combo material like this is still probably the best illustration of the alto giant's genius – his lean, clean style that was full of sharp modern energy and unmistakable brilliance! The group is well-suited for Bird's deft lines – a quartet with bopper Al Haig on piano, Percy Heath on bass, and the great Max Roach on drums – a timekeeper with just the right sensibility for the solos. Tracks are straightforward, but with some impeccable soloing – and the style is a blueprint for the bop sound of the time! Tunes include "Kim", "Cosmic Rays", "Laird Baird", "Chi Chi", and "Confirmation". CD

✨✧ Stanley TurrentineUp At Minton's Vol 1 ... LP
Blue Note, 1961. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Titles on this first volume include a long moody reading of "Yesterdays", plus the hard bop original "Stanley's Time", and the cuts "Broadway" and "But Not For Me". LP, Vinyl record album
