✨✧ Kenny BarronLive At Fat Tuesdays ... CD
Enja (Germany), 1988. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Soulful genius from Kenny Barron – an excellent quintet outing from the late 80s, and one that really benefits from the presence of horns added to the trio! Kenny's work on piano is always great – and his sense of scope, soul, and timing are presented perfectly here – but what we really appreciate is the way that Eddie Henderson's trumpet and John Stubblefield's tenor flesh out the longer tunes on the set, and bring in even more colors that Barron's own writing and performance. The rest of the quintet features Cecil McBee on bass and Victor Lewis on drums – and tracks include the great originals "Lunacy", "518", and "Sand Dune" – plus "There Is No Greater Love" and "Misterioso". CD
(Original Enja pressing, made in West Germany.)

✨✧ Donald BrownSources Of Inspiration (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Muse, 1990. Used ... Out Of Stock
An inspiring set from pianist Donald Brown– working here in a group that features some especially nice work from Gary Bartz and Eddie Henderson! Bartz plays soprano and alto sax, Henderson trumpet and flugelhorn – and both players fill the album with soulful colors and well-spun solos – stretching out majestically to give the set a great deal of power, and really match Brown's imaginative compositions. Donald's piano lines are great too, and rhythmic support is from Buster Williams on bass and Carl Allen on drums – the last two points in a star of a quintet for the session. Titles include "Capteown Ambush", "Overtaken By A Moment", "New York", "Phineas", "The Human Impersonator",and "Do We Have To Say Goodbye". CD includes 2 bonus tracks; "Embraceable You" & "Insane Asylum". CD

✨✧ Kenny Barron QuintetQuickstep ... CD
Enja, 1991. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of those great Kenny Barron records from a time when it seemed like the pianist could do no wrong – effortlessly turning out great sessions like this, with such prolific energy that it's sometimes hard to remember them all! Yet even so, Quickstep is a real standout – a record that shows the maturity Barron was hitting as both a leader and a player at the time – a fierce, focused power that really brings together a great quintet here – with John Stubblefield on tenor, Eddie Henderson on trumpet, David Williams on bass, and Victor Lewis on drums! The record's the sort that we treasure more and more over the years, and feel like we never appreciated fully at the time – and titles include "Hindsight", "Quickstep", "Big Girls", "Here & There", "Once Upon A Time", and "I Wanted To Say". Pharoah SandersMoon Child (180 gram orange & gold vinyl pressing) ... LP
Timeless/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1989. New Copy (reissue)... $30.99 34.99
Beautiful late 80s work from Pharoah – a wonderfully uncomplicated session that still has a great degree of soul! The album was recorded in Paris, with a quintet that includes William Henderson on acoustic piano, Stafford James on bass, Eddie Moore on drums, and Cheikh Tidiane Fale on percussion – and the overall approach is a bit more straight ahead than on some of Sanders' other albums – but in a really great way! The tunes are long and introspective – all done with spiritual rhythmic approaches, letting Pharoah open up on tenor and soprano sax – but never in a way that's overblown or overdone. The solos are perfectly placed – with wonderful phrasing and tone, rich in the colors that we've always loved on Sanders' work, but which can sometimes get lost in the confusion of an over-ambitious session. Titles include "Moon Child", "Moon Rays", "Soon", "Moniebah", and "The Night Has A Thousand Eyes". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Billy HarperDestiny Is Yours ... CD
Steeplechase (Denmark), 1989. Used ... Out Of Stock
An incredible return to form for Billy Harper – and a landmark album recorded at the end of the 80s, when we'd all but given up on him! The session returns Billy to the majesty of his 70s work – placing him in the setting of long tracks, modal rhythms, and spiritual motivation – the uniquely Harper territory first forged with Lee Morgan and Max Roach, sounding better than ever here, with all the confidence of his youth. The group's a quintet – with Eddie Henderson on trumpet, Francesca Tanksley on piano, Clarence Seay on bass, and Newman Baker on drums – working perfectly as a unit, with a power level that's simply amazing. Harper's the main star, reaching towards the heavens with some incredible solos – but he also clearly knows that he wouldn't be able to do what he does without the great level of support he's getting from the rest of the group. Tracks include "Destiny Is Yours", "If One Could Only See", "Groove From Heaven", and "East West Exodus". CD also features 2 bonus tracks – "Dance In The Question" and "My Funny Valentine". CD

✨✧ McCoy TynerJazz OST – West Festival In Nurnberg 1986 ... CD
Timeless/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1986. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A really bold, really freewheeling performance from the great McCoy Tyner – an 80s live album that may well stand as one of his most powerful of the decade! The group here is billed as an All-Star one – and it's a tight quintet that also features Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Joe Henderson on tenor, Avery Sharpe on bass, and Louis Hayes on drums – a combo who sound even better on record than they do on paper! Henderson is wonderful – playing with that special edge he had at the time – and Hubbard, as always, opens up in a live setting in modes that really blow away his studio work. Tunes are all nice and long – and titles include "Just Feeling", "Caravan", "Ask Me Now", and "Inner Glimpse". CD
