Dorothy AshbyRubaiyat Of Dorothy Ashby ... CD
Cadet/Universal (Japan), 1970. New Copy ... $18.99 22.99
Incredible work from the amazing Dorothy Ashby – a brilliant set of funky and spiritual tunes, set to full backings from Chicago soul arranger Richard Evans! This album is easily one of Ashby's greatest, and it's dedicated to the writings of Omar Khayyam – one of the forces guiding Dorothy's more spiritual sound at the end of the 60s, clearly opened up in a way that's not unlike the direction of Alice Coltrane's work, but a lot more focused and a lot more funky! Ashby not only plays her usual jazz harp, but also koto as well, and even sings a bit too – and the larger group directed by Evans features work by Stu Katz on vibes and kalimba, Lenny Druss on flutes, and Cash McCall on guitar – all in a groove that's really a precursor to the Earth Wind & Fire generation of the Chicago scene! Titles include the amazing break "The Moving Finger" – worth the price of the album alone – plus "Dust", "Joyful Grass & Grape", "Heaven & Hell", "Wax & Wane", "Shadow Shapes", "For Some When Young", "Myself When Young", and "Drink". ✨✧ Dorothy AshbyAfro-Harping ... CD
Cadet/Verve, 1968. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the grooviest records ever – a sublime blend of African percussion, soulful orchestrations, and Dorothy Ashby's amazing electric harp! By the time of this landmark album, Dorothy had been knocking around the jazz world for a number of years, but it wasn't until she hooked up with Richard Evans at Cadet Records that her sound really began to cook – breaking down genres and expectations in the trademark style of the best late 60s sides from the Chicago underground. The record's got a bit of funk, a bit of jazz, and a heck of a lot of soul – and the setting works perfectly for Dorothy's harp, giving it a lot more room to work around than some of her smaller jazz combo albums. The album includes two great originals – "Soul Vibrations" and "Afro-Harping" – both of which have a nice funky edge, and a groovy soulful bounce – and other tunes include "Lonely Girl", "Life Has Its Trials", "Look Of Love", "Come Live With Me", and a great version of Freddie Hubbard's "Little Sunflower". ✨✧ Dorothy AshbyDorothy Ashby ... LP
Argo, 1961. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
One of the most stripped-down albums from legendary jazz harpist Dorothy Ashby – and one of her earliest records too! The set's got Dorothy right out front in a trio setting – working with bassist Herman Wright and drummer John Tooley – in a wonderfully jazzy take on the sound of the harp – an instrument used here in a way that's never flowery, or linked to classical modes at all – but instead in a very unique space that's somewhere between jazz bass and guitar – as Ashby plucks these hip notes with a very soulful vibe! The album's got a special Chess/Argo sort of vibe – one that really opens up Ashby's Detroit roots. Dorothy wrote two originals for the set – "John R" and "Booze" – and other titles include "Lonely Melody", "Django", "Gloomy Sunday", and "Lil Darlin". LP, Vinyl record album
(Blue label Argo pressing, with deep groove! Cover has some very light aging, mostly on the back – vinyl is great.)

✨✧ Dorothy AshbyFantastic Jazz Harp Of Dorothy Ashby ... LP
Atlantic, 1965. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
"Fantastic" is right – because Dorothy Ashby is one of the coolest, grooviest people to ever lay her fingers on a harp – and just about one of the few who've ever found a way to use the instrument in a jazz-based setting! This mid 60s date is a pivotal one for Ashby – as it has her opening up with some groovier touches than on her previous jazz records for Savoy and Prestige – a bit more of the sound that would showcase more strongly on her Chess/Cadet albums, given a nice sort of Atlantic sense of soul here! Players here are very hip – and include Richard Davis on bass, Grady Tate on drums, and Willie Bobo on percussion – plus an expanded trombone section on a few titles too. Tracks include "Flighty", "Nabu Corfa", "Dodi Li", "Invitation", "I Will Follow You", "House Of The Rising Sun", and "Essence of Sapphire". LP, Vinyl record album
(Red and green label Broadway pressing – a nice copy! Cover has a small, light cutout mark, but is otherwise great.)

✨✧ Dorothy AshbyIn A Minor Groove ... LP
New Jazz/Real Gone, 1958. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A fantastic early album from jazz harpist Dorothy Ashby! Ashby's a unique talent like no other – and despite the fact that she plays a rather sleepy instrument, the harp, she swings with an other-worldly quality that's simply amazing, quite exotic, and very much in the camp of players like Yusef Lateef or Les Jazz Modes, who were trying similar experiments in jazz. This session features Dorothy in a quartet with the flute of Frank Wess, the bass of Herman Wright, and the drums of Roy Haynes, whose warm lyrical touches provide the perfect melodicism for the group. Titles include "Rascallity", "Bohemia After Dark", "Taboo", "Autumn In Rome", and "It's A Minor Thing". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Dorothy AshbyDorothy's Harp ... LP
Cadet, 1969. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
One of the grooviest Dorothy Ashby albums of the 60s – a set that has her already-great jazz work on harp backed by Chicago soul arrangements from Richard Evans – all in a blend that's somewhere in the territory of the Soulful Strings, but even groovier! And as an added bonus, Odell Brown even plays a bit of Fender Rhodes on the record – which sounds especially great! Both Ashby and Evans are at the height of their powers here – mixing together bits of jazz, soul, and trippier elements in a sublime late 60s Cadet Records blend – one that's carried off perfectly on the original tunes "Truth Spoken Here", "Tornado", "Cause I Need It", and "Just Had To Tell Somebody" – but which also sounds great on some of the album's cool covers too! Other titles include Brazilian numbers "Reza" and "Canto De Ossanha" – both of which are transformed in Dorothy's hands – plus "This Girl's In Love", "By the Time I Get to Phoenix", and "Windmills of Your Mind"! Alina Bzhezhinska Hip Harp CollectiveReflections ... CD
BBE (UK), 2022. New Copy ... $9.99 19.99
When we hear the phrase "hip harp", we think of the magnificent music that Dorothy Ashby cut for Cadet/Concept records at the end of the 60s – and when you hear this set, that's what you'll think of too – and we mean that in the best way possible! The set begins with a great reworking of Ashby's classic "Soul Vibrations – with the jazzy harp of Alina Bzhezhinska in the lead – but as the record moves on, the group really also find their own sound and style – maybe more of a jazz combo than you'd hear on some of Ashby's records – with great work from Tony Kofi on saxes and Jay Phelps on trumpet – both of whom really widen the scope of the sound! Vmala Rowe provides a bit of vocals – and titles include "Soul Vibrations", "Afro Blue", "Paris Sur Le Toit", "Meditation", "Fire", "For Carrol", and "Reflections". CD

Dezron Douglas & Brandee YoungerForce Majeure ... LP
International Anthem, 2020. New Copy ... $23.99
Dezron Douglas and Brandee Younger are two of our favorite jazz musicians to emerge in the past decade – and this set of duets may well be some of the greatest work that either artist has done on record to date! The setting is unique – material pulled from live stream broadcasts that bassist Douglas and harpist Younger did from their Harlem apartment during the lockdown in Spring of 2020 – and if that makes you think that the material's going to be low-fi or cheap, it's not – as there's a sense of majesty here that's really surprising, given that the album features just two musicians! Dezron's bass has never sounded better – and blended with the harp of Younger, the sound is amazing – as Brandee evokes both Alice Coltrane and Dorothy Ashby on the instrument – but also brings in a spirit that's very much her own. The set features remakes of tracks from both Coltranes, and Pharoah Sanders – plus lots of other surprises and original material too – on titles that include "Gospel Trane", "Force Majeure", "This Woman's Work", "Nothing Stupid", "Sing", "The Creator Has A Master Plan", "Never Can Say Goodbye", "We'll Be Right Back", "You Make Me Feel Brand New", and "Equinox". Dick Garcia (Richie Garcia)Message From Garcia ... CD
Dawn, 1956. Used ... $22.99
One of the few sides ever cut as a leader by guitarist Dick Garcia – and a record that's maybe as noteworthy for the work of its leader as it is for the presence of some very hip sidemen! The album's one of those late 50s outings that features Bill Evans on piano, from a time when he wasn't just leading his own groups – and other musicians include the great Gene Quill on alto sax, whose breathy talents always completely win us over – as well as pianist Terry Pollard, a female musician from Detroit who's most famously worked with Dorothy Ashby. Garcia gets plenty of space upfront to do his thing, and also contributed some nice originals to the record – which also features shifting instrumentation on just about every track. Titles include "The Deacon", "Potatoes", "Like Someone In Love", "If I'm Lucky", and "Kimona My House". CD

Prince Lasha EnsembleInsight ... CD
Columbia/Dusty Groove, 1966. New Copy ... $4.99 12.98
Tremendous work from the legendary Prince Lasha – a rare UK-only date from 1966 – and one that has the reedman working away from more familiar contemporaries like Sonny Simmons and Eric Dolphy! The approach on this session is very unique – as Lasha includes harp with the instrumentation, played by David Snell in a style that's right up there with Dorothy Ashby's best jazz work. Pianist Stan Tracey is also on board – playing beautiful notes that have a sharp modern edge, while still falling on the inside of the spectrum – and Lasha himself is especially great – blowing plastic alto sax and wooden flute, both of which have a slightly offbeat sound – but one that's surprisingly warm, which makes the album one of his most sensitive and soulful sessions ever! The tunes are a mix of standards and originals – and there's a wonderful sense of balance here – sounds that are sometimes more inside than other records from Lasha, but which have a really Dolphy-like sense of expression – right at home amidst a wider history of jazz, yet also reaching for new ideas at the same time. Pure genius throughout, and a record that was never made available to audiences in the US. Titles include "Nuttin Out Jones", "Impressions Of Eric Dolphy", "Out Of Nowhere", "Just Friends", "Body & Soul", and "Everything Happens To Me". CD

Harvey MasonFunk In A Mason Jar ... LP
Arista, 1977. Very Good+ ... $7.99
Smooth soulful jazz from Harvey Mason – one of his strong 70s winners for the Arista album, and a record that really brings a new level of class to his sound! There's less of the grit in the grooves than you might expect from the down-home reference of the title – and in a way, the record's a similar shift to well-produced R&B as Michael Henderson or Norman Connor's work from the same time – a soaring, fluid groove that's still supported by solid jazz instrumentation, but which also has a nice dose of soul in the mix! Players here are a real all-star lineup – with talents that include Dorothy Ashby, George Benson, Ronnie Foster, Bob James, and Phil Upchurch – and most cuts have vocals, by The Waters and others. But possibly best of all is the production – which is by Harvey, and really wonderful – sophisticated and smooth, but never slick – a really careful balance that really puts him right up there with Norman Connors or Roy Ayers! Titles include "Pack Up Your Bags", "Till You Take My Love", "Funk In A Mason Jar", "What's Going On", "Set It Free", "Space Cadets" and "Freedom Either Way". LP, Vinyl record album

Flora PurimComplete Warner Recordings (Nothing Will Be As It Was Tomorrow/Every Day Every Night/Carry On/bonus tracks) ... CD
Warner/Wounded Bird, Late 70s. New Copy 2CDs ... $15.99 18.99
Three wonderful albums from this legendary Brazilian singer – all presented in a single set! First up is Nothing Will Be As It Was Tomorrow – a record that's quite different from Flora's earlier work, but in a way that we find very compelling! The record was produced by Leon Ndugu Chancler, and it's got a smooth fusion sound that's kind of in a southern California R&B mode, played by a huge range of excellent Brazilian and west coast talents that include Patrice Rushen, Dorothy Ashby, Fred Jackson, Raul De Souza, Toninho Horta, and Airto. While this sound overwhelms the core of Flora's usual Brazilian jazz approach, it also expands some of the tracks to a great groove – with Flora's vocals on top, stretching out in a whole new way! Includes a great English language version of the Milton Nascimento classic "Nada Sera Como Antes", plus the cuts "You Love Me Only", "I'm Coming For Your Love", "Corre Nina", "Angels", "Bridges", and "Fairy Tale Song". Every Day Every Night is a beautifully soulful record from Flora Purim – still awash with touches from her Brazilian roots, but also done with a great 70s LA sound! Airto's helping Flora out on production, but the real hero here is Michel Colombier – who handles most of the arrangements and wrote a good deal of the tunes with Purim and Airto – mixing his own expansive studio talents with their organically-forged groove, in a way that makes the record a real standout from the California fusion scene of the 70s! Players include Randy Brecker, Lee Ritenour, George Duke, Herbie Hancock, Harvey Mason, and other jazz heavyweights – and titles include "The Hope", "I Just Don't Know", "In Brasil", "Blues Ballad", "Why I'm Alone", "Walking Away", and "Samba Michel". Carry On is one of Flora Purim's more R&B-sounding albums from the 70s, produced by George Duke with an appreciation for Flora's Brazilian jazz roots, but with a smoother sound that's in keeping with Duke's own work of the time! The combination is pretty sweet – a professional culmination of the mixture of fusion and Brazilian jazz that had been happening in the San Francisco scene during most of the 70s, and featuring many of the musicians who had helped make that groove so strong. Players include Airto, Sheila Escovedo, Joe Farrell, Ronnie Foster, Bobby Lyle, and Larry Williams – and tracks include "Niura Is Coming Back", "From The Lonely Afternoon", "Freeway Jam", "Beijo Partido", "Corine", and "Love Lock". Includes bonus tracks too – "Tango Blues" and "Sad Song". CD

A bold new frontier for use of the harp in experimental music – and that's saying a lot, given that Ayako Shinozaki recorded this album during the generation of Alice Coltrane and Dorothy Ashby! Shinokazi takes the instrument a bit back towards its use in more serious music, but with definite avant leanings, and certainly a sound that's inspired by the bold frontiers of free improvisation – as she opens up the harp in ways that are very different than some of the sweeter, softer styles that were often used in the 20th century – and instead uses it with a really keen ear for experimental tones and sharper-edged sounds! Two pieces are solo – readings of Toru Takemitsu's "Stanza II" and Katsuhiro Tsubono's "Poem Of Rim" – and the second half features a duet with violinist Takehisa Kosugi on "Heterodyne". CD

Jazz harp genius Amanda Whiting takes on a host of older tracks here – and completely makes them her own, thanks to some very sensitive, spiritual handling of the material! The group is a trio – Deej Williams on bass and Tony Robinson on drums – and they take the tunes in a style that's very open, but gently rhythmic – allowing Whiting's work on the strings to open up all these beautiful currents on the songs – really transforming them, at a level that reminds us of the way that Dorothy Ashby could take a simple tune and lift to the heavens with her own famous work on the instrument! Really haunting work from Leo Smith – a key 70s session that features some of his sharpest trumpet work on record, plus some unusual instrumentation that really makes the album stand out! Half the tracks feature some wonderful vibes from Bobby Naughton – spare and dark-sounding, very much a great companion to Smith's spacious trumpet and flugelhorn lines – in a group that also features Dwight Anderson on wooden flute, tenor, and clarinet, Pheeroan Ak Laff on drums, and Wes Brown on bass and a bit more wooden flute! The other two tracks on the session feature Smith's trumpet with a trio of harp players – Irene, Carol, and Ruth Emmanuel – all very interesting players on their instrument, using the strings in these carefully chromatic ways that are really wonderful – quite different than any sort of Dorothy Ashby vibe, but with a similar sense of spiritual energy. Electric harp?!?! Don't ask us – we like it! Sure, Dorothy Ashby had been making jazz inroads on the instrument in the US at about the same time – but Teupen had a cool sound that was a bit sitar, a bit guitar, and a bit "inside the piano" at his wildest moments. ✨✧ VariousChicago Soul – Electric Blues, Funk & Soul – The New Sound Of Chicago In The 1960's ... CD
Soul Jazz (UK), Late 60s. Used ... Out Of Stock
A massive overview of the genius Chicago scene of the late 60s – and a set that's overflowing with some of the heaviest music ever recorded! The collection focuses on the most groundbreaking work from the later Chess years – particularly the funky blues, psychedelic soul, and tripped out jazz that was coming out of the Cadet Concept studios in the hands of producers like Charles Stepney, Richard Evans, and Marshall Chess! The Chess groups were ahead of their time by decades – blending together styles without a thought of simple genre restrictions, often forsaking chart fame and record sales in pursuit of an adventurous groove. And while some of the artists on the set may be familiar names, we can promise that most of them are presented in styles that you may not have heard before – as the collection features many unreissued numbers that are making their first reappearance here! CD set comes with a 40 page set of notes – and features 20 tracks in all, including "Please Newsboy" by Eve Barnum, "Burning Spear" by Soulful Strings, "More & More" by Little Milton, "Baltimore Oriole" by Lorez Alexandria, "Soul Vibrations" by Dorothy Ashby, "Evil" by Howlin Wolf, "Stereo Freeze" by The Stereos, "The Way I Feel" by Phil Upchurch, "Mama's Got A Good Thing" by Laura Lee, "The Wailer" by Sonny Cox, "Leave It In The Hands Of Love" by Fontella Bass, "Why Am I Treated So Bad" by The Majestic Choir & The Soul Stirrers, "She Suits Me To A Tee" by Buddy Guy, "Memory Band" by Rotary Connection, and "In My Body's House" by Gene Chandler. ✨✧ Dezron Douglas & Brandee YoungerForce Majeure ... CD
International Anthem, 2020. Used ... Out Of Stock
✨✧ Rinsyoe Kida with Akira Ishikawa & His Count BuffalosTsugaru Jongara Bushi Drum & Tusgaru Jamisen ... LP
Teichiku/Cinedelic (Italy), 1973. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Shamisen never sounded so groovy before – thanks to excellent work from Akira Ishikawa & His Count Buffalos – who are working here at their funky 70s best! The album mixes great sounds from Count Buffalos with the solo talents of Rinsoye Kida on shamisen – the traditional Japanese three-stringed instrument that's usually used in much more conservative settings – but which is recorded here in a style that's right up front in the mix, and able to step out nicely in front of the fuller, groovier backings from Ishikawa and his group! Given the nature of the instrument, the style is quite different than some other jazz albums from the time that try to mix with Japanese folkloric styles – maybe a bit like Dorothy Ashby on the koto, but more striking overall. Notes and titles are all in Japanese – and the whole thing's pretty darn compelling! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Wade MarcusMetamorphosis ... LP
ABC, 1976. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A really beautiful little record from Wade Marcus – one that features Wade's great talents for soulful arranging, but with plenty of jazzy touches over the top! The set's got a decidedly disco feel at times, but also uses main soloists on all tracks – creating a strong sense of the solo moment in a lusher setting, in a style that's a bit like some of the more fully arranged albums on Kudu. The real standout is a take on "Poinciana" that runs for 7 minutes long – using great solo work from Fred Jackson and Joe Sample in an arrangement of the tune that expands off of Ahmad Jamal's version, and which has some great nods to his original touches! Other titles include "Metamorphosis", "Funk Machine", "Would You Like To Ride", and "Journey To Morocco" – and other soloists include Jerome Richardson, Lee Ritenour, Dorothy Ashby, and Bill Green. ✨✧ Harvey MasonFunk In A Mason Jar (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Arista (Japan), 1977. Used ... Out Of Stock
CD features bonus single mixes of "Pack Up Your Bags" and "Till You Take My Love". CD

✨✧ Flora PurimNothing Will Be As It Was Tomorrow ... LP
Warner, 1977. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Quite different from Flora's earlier work, but in a way that we find quite compelling! ✨✧ Soulful StringsMagic Of Christmas ... CD
Cadet/Real Gone, 1968. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of the coolest Christmas albums we've ever heard – and maybe one of the coolest sets ever from this legendary soul instrumental project from Chicago! The Soulful Strings are already great on other albums, but they really blow us away here with the way they completely transform familiar tunes – using the impeccable arrangements of the great Richard Evans, and a host of hot strings from Dorothy Ashby on harp, Cleveland Eaton on bass, and Phil Upchurch on guitar – plus a bit of hip vibes from Bobby Christian as well! And Evans' style here really outdoes itself – and hits a similar level to the best Charles Stepney material on Cadet at the same time – making for amazing sounds on titles that include "Little Drummer Boy", "Snowfall", "Dance Of The Sugarplum Fairy", "Sleigh Ride", and "Parade Of The Wooden Soldiers". Way more than a Christmas record – and actually one we'll happily play all year long! CD

✨✧ Brandee YoungerBrand New Life ... CD
Impulse, 2023. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
There's few folks who can make a harp sound as cool as Brandee Younger – one of the few people to take the instrument and really bring it into the hippest sides of jazz and soul – and showing that in the right hands, the harp can be this majestic instrument with a very soulful vibe! We'd put Younger on a very short list of true inspirations on the instrument – one that would include Dorothy Ashby and Alice Coltrane – yet her music here is very different than those earlier pioneers, as she weaves the harp with great vocal contributions and warmer jazz instrumentation – all at a level that maybe even tops the wonderful sounds on her previous record! Guests here include 9th Wonder, MeShell N'Degeocello, Pete Rock, and Mumu Fresh – on titles that include "Come Live With Me", Dust", "Running Game", "Moving Target", "If It's Magic", Livin & Lovin In My Own Way", "You're A Girl For One Man Only", and a great remake of "Windmills Of Your Mind". Fat City (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. Used ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic blend of weird break tracks – in a mode that reminds us of some of those dodgy comps like Dimensions In Sound or Dusty Fingers from a few years ago, but which is put together here in a great all-legit package by the folks at Manchester's Fat City! The track selection is amazing – with a blend of rock, soundtrack, easy, and other styles all united by one factor: all cuts have great funky moments, worth of sampling by any hip hopper, but also just plain great for listening! Titles include "Joyful Grass & Grape" by Dorothy Ashby, "Getting High" by Eddie Warner, "Dance Of The Vampires" by The Vampires of Dartmoor, "April Fool" by Isis, "Yesterday's Folks" by US 69, "English Sparrow" by Paul Parrish, "Karkadon" by The Devil's Anvil, "Freak" by Nino Ferrer, "Hippies" by Serge Gainsbourg, Brigitte Bardot, & Sasha Distel, and "Fall Out" by The Advancement.
