David MurrayDavid Murray Big Band ... CD
DIW/Columbia, 1991. Used ... $2.99
Murray's fronting a big band led by Butch Morris – a group that sounds a lot better to our ears than most of Morris' own larger groups of the time, possibly because of the style of the recording. The tracks shift mood, tone, and approach with each number – working out references to some spiritual leaders, and forging new ground on a few of the more adventurous numbers. Murray's horn is in the lead mostly – but the interplay with the rest of the group is pretty incredible at times. Players include Fred Hopkins, Sonelius Smith, James Spaulding, John Purcell, Craig Harris, Vincent Chaney, and Don Byron – and titles include "Istanbul", "Lovejoy", "Calling Steve McCall", "Paul Gonsalves", and "Lester". Allen ToussaintBright Mississippi ... CD
Nonesuch, 2009. Used ... $6.99
A bigger step into a piano led jazzy style from Allen Toussaint – grooving in a timeless Crescent City influenced sound – a wonderful record, one we'll go back to for years to come! Allen's been a huge part of the New Orleans musical landscape for many, many years, and it's not a stretch to imagine he's had the laidback, but evocative jazz of the territory in his blood for just as long – so it's a wonder that he hasn't made a record like this before now. There's nothing cliche or cheesy in Allen's work here, which has kind of an after hours vibe that suits it well, and he's put together an outstanding group of players. Marc Ribot is on guitar, Don Byron on clarinet, Nicholas Payton on trumpet, David Piltch on upright bass, Jay Bellarose on drums, and guests Joshua Redman on tenor sax and Brad Mehldau on piano. Titles include "Egyptian Fantasy", "Dear Old Southland", "St James Infirmary", "Singin' The Blues", "Winin' The Blues", West End Blues", "Blue Drag", "Bright Mississippi", "Day Dream", "Solitude" and more. ✨✧ VariousJazz Actuel – A Collection Of Avant Garde/Free Jazz/Psychedelia From The BYG/Actuel Catalog Of 1969-1971 (3CD version) ... CD
BYG/Charly (UK), 1969/1970/1971. Used 3 CDs ... $14.99
A fantastic package that explores the full range of genius on the legendary avant label BYG/Actuel – one of the most important European imprints at the end of the 60s! Actuel was home to some of the best avant garde jazz coming out of Paris in the late 60s and early 70s – an especially important document of the post-68 revolution in European music – at a time when so many American players where showing up in France, and finding great opportunities in the new freedoms of the scene! The package features seminal sides from US avant musicians – like Steve Lacy, Anthony Braxton, Clifford Thornton, Don Cherry, Jimmy Lyons, Archie Shepp, Sonny Sharrock, Sunny Murray, Grachan Moncur III, and The Art Ensemble Of Chicago – and it also features work by European musicians like Claude Delcloo and Jacques Coursil, plus genre-busting work by MEV and Gong as well. The 3CD box features a 48 page book – with lots of great illustrations, and notes from Thurston Moore and Byron Coley – and the set features 26 long tracks in all! CD

✨✧ Joe McPhee/Ernie BosticLive At Vassar 1970 ... CD
Corbett vs. Dempsey, 1970. Used 2 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Some of the hippest jazz ever played at Vassar College – and previously-unreleased work from avant legend Joe McPhee, recorded right around the same time as his classic Nation Time record! One CD features a smoking performance by McPhee on tenor – working with a group that also includes Byron Morris on alto sax – really stretching out on a mixture of original tunes and some surprisingly free takes on standards – familiar songs blown openly, almost with a Coltrane Quartet sort of approach! But the other CD is even more amazing – and even more obscure – as it features a group with vibist Ernie Bostic, alto saxophonist Otis Greene, and Hammond player Herbie Leaman – all musicians we really don't know at all – but who sound wonderful together! The mix of organ and vibes is completely sublime – and tracks are very long and airy, with a haunting feel that's unlike anything we've ever heard before. The Bostic group plays "Flowers For Mattie B", "Bag's Groove", and "Resolution" – and McPhee's combo takes on "Green Dolphin Street", "Spring Street", "Muntu", "Maybell's Blues", "Softly As In A Morning Sunrise", and "Stella By Starlight". ✨✧ VariousCity To City – A Retrospective Journey Through Detroit, Chicago & New York Underground House ... CD
BBE (UK), 1980s/1990s. Used 2CD ... Out Of Stock
An extremely well-done collection of underground house from the Chicago, Detroit, and New York scenes of the past 20 years – not a "greatest hits" at all, but an even-better assortment of hard to find gems and oft-overlooked singles! DJ Deep put the whole thing together, and he's really given the matter some careful consideration – a fact that's apparent when you read his notes on each tune in the set. Disc 1 features a mixed assortment of Chicago and Detroit work from years back, and disc 2 is an unmixed collection that brings the groove into later years. There's a heck of a lot here that you'll have a hard time finding anywhere else – and the 2CD package features 25 tracks in all, with titles that include "The Groove" by Da Posse, "Kaos (Juice Bar mix)" by Rhythm Is Rhythm, "Expanded" by Jeff Mills, "Acid Tracks" by DJ Pierre, "Phylyps Track Vol 1" by Basic Channel, "Elements" by Psyche, "Jupiter Jazz" by World 2 World, "Don't Lead Me (Nexus 21 mix)" by Terry Baldwin featuring Paris Grey, "I Feel It" by Kerri Chandler, "House Flashback" by Ron Hardy, "I Like To Move" by LB Bad, "String Ensemble" by Byron Burke, "12 Inches Of Pleasure" by Ron Trent & Braxton Holmes, "Dream State" by Cajmere with Derrick Carter, "Fallin In Love" by Burrell, "Keep Movin" by Mike Perras, "You're Someone Special" by Mr Fingers, and "How I Feel" by Lil Louis. ✨✧ Mickey KatzSimcha Time – Mickey Katz Plays Music For Weddings, Bar Mitzvahs, & Brisses ... CD
Capitol/World Pacific, Late 50s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Jewish entertainer/musician Mickey Katz has been getting a lot of attention recently – whether it be from modern projects to revive his music, like Don Byron's from a few years ago, or from press in places like The Village Voice, dealing with the resurgence in Jewish cultural identity. Different from the recent Klezmer projects, though, these recordings are graced with the borscht-belt sense of humor and whimsy that was Katz's stock in trade – and have a lightness and sprightliness that makes them sparkle even today. ✨✧ Meshell NdegeocelloMeshell Ndegeocello Presents The Spirit Music Jamia – Dance Of The Infidel (French pressing) ... CD
Universal (France), 2005. Used ... Out Of Stock
An incredible departure for Meshell Ndegeocello – a jazz-based project with a sound that's different than any of her other work! The album shows a depth that we never expected – a richly instrumental mode that's only touched by vocals on a few songs – and which is mostly territory explored by Meshell on bass, along with other jazz players that include Michael Cain on keyboards, Jack De Johnette on drums, and sax work from Kenny Garrett, Don Byron, Oliver Lake, and Oran Coltrane! 3 of the album's 8 tracks feature vocals – by Sabina, Cassandra Wilson, and Lalah Hathaway – and the tunes are all long, languid, and laidback – drifting along through some really moody territory. Titles include "Mu-Min", "Al Falaq 113", "Dance Of The Infidel", "The Chosen", "Luqman", and "Heaven". CD

✨✧ Wallace RoneyPrototype ... CD
High Note, 2004. Used ... Out Of Stock
A nicely electrified set from trumpeter Wallace Roney – working here in a style that has plenty of moody backdrops on Fender Rhodes, plus some really snapping percussion from drummer Eric Allen! There's a sound here that's clearly inspired by 70s Miles, but which also moves through a range of more recent expression, and which often reminds us of work from French trumpeter Erik Truffaz on his first few Blue Note albums. Some of the tracks are more acoustic and straightforward, in the manner of Roney's earlier albums – and players include Adam Holzman on Fender Rhodes, Geri Allen on acoustic keys, Antoine Roney on tenor and soprano saxes, and Matt Garrison on bass. Guest performers include Don Byron on bass clarinet, Clifton Anderson on trombone, and DJ Logic on turntables – and titles include "Cyberspace", "Shadow Dance", "Prototype", "Then & Now", "Secret Identity", and "Three Views Of The Blues". ✨✧ VariousJazz Spectrum 2 – Real Jazz For Real People (Compiled By Dr Bob Jones) ... CD
BBE (UK), 2000. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the best sets of jazzy grooves we've heard in ages! This one pushes way past the usual batch of funky hammond cuts and goes for a mighty soulful sound that encompases a wide range of styles and emotions. The overall groove is quite sophisticated, and Dr. Bob Jones has done a heck of a job in selecting cuts that have been favorites of the world groove scene for the past decade or so. Some of these cuts appeared on compilations years ago, but this is the first time they've been out legit, and for many other tracks, it's the first time that they've been included anywhere. There's 18 tracks in all, and titles include "Little B's Poem" by Dee Dee Bridgewater, "The Hipster" by Harold McNair, "Ridin High (parts 1 & 2)" by Bobby Cooke Quartet, "Babete" by Made In Brasil, "No Man No" by Bill Reddie, "Birimbau" by Os Maracatu, "Soulin With The Rivieras" by Julius Jones, "See You Later" by Joanne Grauer, "Panamanian Aire" by Byron Morris, "Stormy Jazzmin Part 2" by Stormy Jazzmin, "Baja Run" by Don Randi & Quest, "Better Than Anything" by Julie Kelly, "Trinkets & Trash" by Ryo Kawasaki, and "Seeds" by Sahib Shihab. Very nice, and chock full of goodies! CD

VariousTransmissions From The Total Refreshment Centre ... CD
Blue Note, 2023. New Copy ... $7.99 13.99
London's Total Refreshment Centre has been one of the world's hippest musical venues in recent years – a fantastic showcase for all the sorts of groundbreaking, genre-busting work that's been happening in the city – as well as host to some equally free-thinking artists from around the globe! There's not set styles here – music moves easily between jazz, soul, funk, hip hop, and some more cosmic styles at times – similar to the energy of the International Anthem label's more inventive projects – one of whom appear on the set. Many of these artists have not gotten the full exposure they're due, either releasing material on small labels or just online – and it's wonderful to have all this material pulled together in such a great statement on the forefront of jazz in the 2020s! Titles include "Closed Circle" by Byron Wallen, "Visions" by Soccer 96 with Kieron Boothe, "Crescent (city swamp dub)" by Jake Long, "Eloquence" by Matters Unknown with Miryam Solomon, "Isa"by Zeitgeist Freedom Energy Exchange with Noah Slee, "Black" by Neu Grafik with Brother Portrait, and a nice reworking of the Stanley Cowell classic "Plight" by Resavoir. ✨✧ Akiko TsurugaBeyond Nostalgia ... CD
Steeplechase (Denmark), 2024. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
There's no nostalgia here – as Akiko Tsuruga plays the Hammond B3, but in a way that's very fresh, and very much her own – using the instrument to create these bold blocks of color, which are then augmented by contributions from a mighty nice group of players! The horn work is especially great – and the record soars with the trumpet of Joe Magnarelli and tenor of Jerry Weldon – the latter of whom always seems to bring out something special on a date with an organ, balancing out Akiko's tone here in a really great way. Ed Cherry plays guitar, Byron Landham handles drums, and titles include the originals "Tiger", "Beyond Nostalgia", "Middle Of Somewhere", "Dancing Cats", and "Happy Blues" – plus versions of "Back Track" and "Mack The Knife". ✨✧ Moses MolelekwaGenes & Spirits ... CD
MELT 2000 (UK), 2000. Used ... Out Of Stock
An overlooked bit of spiritual jazz from the 90s – issued at a time when the South African scene was really hitting a new level of creative energy, even though much of it wasn't always recognized by audiences over here in the US! The set's got this powerful fusion of ideas – older South African jazz styles mixed with new inspirations from other points of the globe, especially London – as keyboardist Moses Taiwa Molelekwa plays piano, Fender Rhodes, and other keyboards in shifting settings that are often very heavy on percussion and bass, used in differing ways that evoke a more global sense of rhythm. The album also features work from Dennis Rollins on trombone, Frances Reardon on bass clarinet, Khaya Mahlangu on soprano sax, Byron Wallen on trumpet, Rowland Sutherland on flute, and Lawrence Matshiza on guitar – and there's a bit of vocals on the record from Flora Purim, Max Mntambo, and Lungiswa Plaatijes, plus a bit from Moses himself. The vibe is somewhere in the territory of some of the excellent Sheer Sound jazz releases at the end of the last century – and titles include "Spirits Of Tembisa", "Sogra", "Genes & Spirits", "Tsala", "Wa Mpona", "Kwaze Kwangcono", "Rapela", "Dance To Africa", and "Ntatemoholo". ✨✧ BlazeKeep Hope Alive – Blaze Presents Underground Dance Artists United For Life (with bonus track) ... CD
King Street, 2004. Used ... Out Of Stock
An incredibly majestic project – and a record that matches its mighty spirit with an equally great set of grooves! Blaze put together the album to benefit the Lifebeat AIDS charity – and they've got help from a tremendous assemblage of underground club talents – including Barbara Tucker, Ultra Nate, Arnold Jarvis, Byron Stingly, Joi Cardwell, Michell Weeks, and others – all working with Blaze as Underground Dance Artists United For Life! The set kicks off with the anthemic "Keep Hope Alive" track – done in ensemble fashion, almost like the classic Philly All Stars recording of the 70s. That cut resurfaces throughout the set, as individual artists step forth with key tracks of their own as well – so that the album features a few takes on the "Keep Hope Alive" theme, plus cuts that include "We Are One" by Blaze, "Spread Love" by Byron Stingily, "Most Precious Love" by Barbara Tucker, "Hiya Luv" by Kenny Bobien, "Be Yourself" by Joi Cardwell, "A Wonderful Place" by Ultra Nate, and "Make The Time" by Arnold Jarvis. The whole set's tied together with Blaze arrangements and production – soaring along on a spiritually soulful groove! Includes bonus track "Keep Hope Alive (Blaze Shrine mix)". CD

✨✧ Ed CherryAre We There Yet ... CD
Cellar Live, 2023. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Guitarist Ed Cherry gave us some great albums on the Posi-tone label in recent years – and he's equally great here in a different setting – a cool cooker of a record with Monte Croft on vibes and Kyle Koehler on Hammond! The mix of guitar, vibes, and organ is mighty nice – used in ways that are looser and more open than they would have been back on a 60s session for Prestige, yet still equally soulful under the leadership of Cherry – and driven on nicely by the sharp crackle of the drums of Byron Landham! Titles include "Holy Land", "Are We There Yet", "Ding Dong", "Jean Pauline", "Japanese Folk Song", "Green Jeans", and "Lawns". CD
