✨✧ Howard McGhee & Teddy EdwardsWise In Time ... CD
Storyville (Denmark), 1979. Used ... Out Of Stock
Great late life work from these two important figures on the LA jazz scene of the postwar years – trumpeter Howard McGhee and tenorist Teddy Edwards – both sounding wonderful here in a very relaxed, open setting! The record's got an approach that's especially marked by the deeper, soulful tone that Edwards adopted from the 60s onward – that great ear for a ballad, which McGhee follows strongly in his performance, although with a tone that's maybe a bit more offbeat. The rest of the group features Art Hillery on piano, Leroy Vinegar on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums – and titles include a great version of "I Want To Talk About You", plus "Crescent", "Time Waits", "Ruby My Dear", and "If You Could See Me Now". ✨✧ ChicReal People/Tongue In Chic ... CD
Atlantic/Wounded Bird, 1980/1982. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A great early 80s 2-fer – with a pair of killer albums from Chic! First up is Real People – wonderful work from Chic, and a record that maybe didn't include any super-huge hits, but which is maybe even better because of that – a sometimes-overlooked gem that has the team of Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards in perfectly sharp formation! The group have already moved past disco, yet maintain that core funk that always makes their work so tremendous – rock-solid basslines from Edwards, ripping guitars from Rodgers, and unified vocals with help from Alfa Anderson and Luci Martin – who both really help the tunes soar! Titles include "Chip Off the Old Block", "Open Up", "26", "I Loved You More", "Real People", and "Rebels Are We". Tongue In Chic is damn funky work from Chic – one of those early 80s records that has the group freed from any need to cross over to the disco dancefloor – which only seems to bring out a deeper groove from the duo of Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards! Basslines and guitar are razor-sharp – and there's some jazzy horns brought into the mix, which emphasize the great 80s groove in the music – a soaring quality that has the twin vocals of Alfa Anderson and Luci Martin really soaring over the top! Titles include "I Feel Your Love Comin On", "When You Love Someone", "Sharing Love", "Chic (Everybody Say)", "Hangin", "Hey Fool", and "City Lights". CD

Contours & Dennis EdwardsJust A Little Misunderstanding – Rare & Unissued Motown 1965 to 1968 ... CD
Motown/Kent (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy ... $12.99 19.99
Just when you think you know everything there is to know about Motown, here comes a set to open your ears and blow your mind all over again! The set unearths a huge amount of rare work by The Contours – the rollicking group who gave Motown a sweet album and handful of singles in the 60s, but who also recorded a lot of other work that was never issued at the time – including a sweet array of tracks that feature a young Dennis Edwards as their lead vocalist! Edwards is best known for his work in the Temptations – but these tracks predate that time, when Dennis was brought in to give fresh focus to the ailing Contours – and lent his strong lead vocals to their massively grooving sound. The package features a whopping 26 tracks – 14 issued here for the first time ever, and a lot more pulled from only collections of rare Motown releases – and titles include "Determination", "I'll Turn To Stone", "I Like Everything About You", "Can't Do Without Your Love", "Come See About Me", "I Grow Deeper In Love Every Day", "Our Last Rendezvous", "Which Way To My Baby", "Need Your Lovin", "What's So Good About Goodbye", "Sunny", and "I'm Here Now That You Need Me". ✨✧ Teddy EdwardsIt's About Time ... LP
Pacific Jazz, 1960. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
One of the most easily swinging of Teddy's albums from the time – thanks to backing from the Les McCann trio! The format is simple – one of those "jazz soloist meets the famous piano trio" sessions that were big in the late 50s and early 60s. Teddy gets plenty of room to solo in his solid, deep tone – and Les holds back a bit more than usual, working the trio in a strong accompanist mode. Titles include "Frankly Speaking", "Beve's Cojumulations", "Undecided", "Fools Rush In", and "Lover Come Back To Me". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Teddy EdwardsHeart & Soul ... LP
Contemporary, 1962. Good ... Out Of Stock
One of our favorite albums by Teddy Edwards – and one with some organ in the group! This obscure quartet side has Gerry Wiggins playing a rare bit of Hammond – grooving the group with a lean and open-ended soul jazz approach that really has Edwards blowing at his best! The style sits right up there next to Gene Ammons' best albums of the time, and the rest of the group features Leroy Vinnegar on bass and Milt Turner on drums. Titles include "Smokin", "No Regrets", "A Bag Of Blues", "Wiggin", and "Little Steddy" – all originals that get Edwards past the usual bag of soulful standards! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Joe Graham/John EdwardsHigher Than High/It's Got To Be The Real Thing For Me ... 7-inch
Aware/Kent (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Two Atlanta soul tracks from the 70s – back to back on a funky 45! "Higher Than High" has a great quick-stepping groove – almost a blacksploitation sort of vibe, which is matched by some nice Curtis Mayfield-type changes as the lyrics progress – but served up by Joe Graham in a style that's definitely his own! The flipside has John Edwards working some great magic on a sweet tune by Sam Dees – really opening up that emotion that Sam can bring to a song like "It's Got To Be The Real Thing"! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Jimmy WitherspoonSpoon ... LP
Reprise, 1961. Near Mint- ... $3.99
Mellow blues with a touch of jazz – a really great session cut by Jimmy Witherspoon, with backings by Bob Florence – played by a smallish group that includes Gerald Wilson, Herbie Harper, Earl Palmer, Gerry Wiggins, and Teddy Edwards! The sound here is nicely subdued – not that hokey, overdone blues-based mode used already as a "revival" of the genre in the early 60s – and instead a smokey, adult, sophisticated approach that was very much in keeping with Witherspoon's best talents, and that sound of his that paved the way for bigger crossover names in the 60s. Titles include "Blues Serenade", "Music Maestro Please", "Don't Worry Bout Me", "Lover Come Back To Me", "Do Nothin Till You Hear From Me", and "Just One More Chance". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono tri-color Pop Series pressing with deep groove. Cover has light wear, some aging, and a small sticker in back.)

✨✧ Les McCann & Gerald WilsonMcCann/Wilson ... LP
Pacific Jazz, Mid 60s. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
2 of the greatest artists on Pacific Jazz meet head to head in the studio – as the Les McCann trio gets backed up by the Gerald Wilson Orchestra! Given the hipness of Wilson's sound, and the fact that his group features solo work by Teddy Edwards and Dennis Budimir, the overall approach to the record is really wonderful – pushing McCann way past his usual bag, and fleshing out the core grooves of the trio very very nicely! Tracks include "Maleah", "Love Of Living To Do", "Kathleen's Theme", "Gus Gus", "Restin In Jail", and "Bailor The Wailor". LP, Vinyl record album
(Blue label stereo pressing with deep groove.)

✨✧ Henry ManciniWhat Did You Do In The War Daddy? ... LP
RCA, 1966. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Kind of nutty stuff from this weird Blake Edwards film that starred James Coburn and Dick Shawn. The material's not as jazz-based as some of Mancini's other scores, but it does have a delightfully nutty sound that's in keeping with the kind of mad 60s film it was written for. The postwar memory of the film situates it in Italy, so a fair number of the melodies have slight Italian overtones – including "Sicily Forever", "Gina", "Wine and Women", and "Festa!". LP, Vinyl record album
(Stereo Dynagroove pressing with deep groove. Cover has light wear and aging.)

✨✧ Howard McGheeMaggie's Back In Town ... LP
Contemporary, 1961. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Howard McGhee and his trumpet team up with pianist Phineas Newborn, bassist Leroy Vinnegar and Shelley Manne on drums for this great early 60s session. The record features the McGhee original "Demon Chase" and two Teddy Edwards songs, "Sunset Eyes" and his salute to McGhee "Maggie's Back in Town." McGhee himself pays tribute to one of his favorite trumpet players, Clifford Brown by doing Brown's "Brownie Speaks." Other titles include "Softly, As in a Morning Sunrise," "Willow Weep for Me" and "Summertime." LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono yellow label pressing with deep groove. Cover has a split spine and half split bottom seam, light wear and aging.)

✨✧ Milt Jackson & Ray BrownThat's The Way It Is ... LP
Impulse, 1969. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
At the end of the 60s, Milt Jackson and Ray Brown cut some very groovy records together – teamed up in a great pairing of styles that pushed both of them way past the more standard sounds of earlier years! This album's one of the best of the bunch – as it features pianist Monty Alexander joining the pair, bringing in some warmly soulful elements on piano – in ways that are a great bridge between his work for MGM and MPS! The set also features great tenor from Teddy Edwards – blowing with a deep tone and a sharp edge – and in addition to vibes by Jackson and bass by Brown, the group also features Dick Berk on drums. The set was recorded live at Shelly's Manne-Hole – and titles include Alexander's "That's The Way It Is", plus "Blues In The Basement", "Wheelin & Dealin", and "Tenderly". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Gerald WilsonFeelin Kinda Blues ... LP
Pacific Jazz, Mid 60s. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Ahhh . . . Gerald Wilson at the height of his powers – recording here in a mode that could never miss! The group's a jazz orchestra, but it's filled with some of the hippest cats on the west coast in the 60s – soulful soloists who include Anthony Ortega on flute and alto, Curtis Amy on soprano sax, Phil Moore on piano, Teddy Edwards on tenor, Victor Feldman on vibes, and Dennis Budimir on guitar – all grooving in tight formation that still allow plenty of space for solos on each tune – even when the group is vamping, romping, and hitting an all-out swinging 60s soul jazz groove! Includes versions of "Freddy Freeloader", "Watermelon Man", "Yeh Yeh", and "I Got You (I Feel Good)" – and other titles include "Well Son Shuffle", "Do Anything You Wanna", "When I'm Feeling Kinda Blue", and "One On The House". LP, Vinyl record album
