Dave FrishbergOklahoma Toad ... LP
CTI, 1970. Very Good+ ... $19.99 28.99
A sublime little set from the legendary Dave Frishberg – his first vocal effort ever, and quite different than most of his later work! At the time of the record, Frishberg was a songwriter who penned such underground hipster jazz vocalist classics as "I'm Hip" and "Peel Me A Grape" – and the set has a clever, laidback feel that's very much in the spirit of those two great tunes – Dave singing and playing electric piano, clavinet, and organ – with some great jazzy touches by a group that includes Al Cohn on tenor, Bill Berry on trumpet, and Garnett Brown on trombone. There's a nicely offbeat feel to the record – both the tunes and the vocals – that reminds us a lot of the work of Bob Dorough – and part of this may have to do with the fact that Dorough cronie Stuart Scharf played guitar on the album. But the real genius is up to Frishberg, who's clever without being cloying – witty without ever being full of himself – and incredibly charming in the way he delivers the lyrics with a simple, honest approach. Titles include "The Prophet Of Doom", "Oklahoma Toad", "One Horse Town", "Van Lingle Mungo", "The Secret Of Successd", "Wallflower Lonely Cornflower Blue", and "Nasty Nasty Habit". LP, Vinyl record album
(Green label pressing with Van Gelder stamp. Cover has light wear on back, and in one seam corner – but overall this is a very nice copy.)

✨✧ Dave Frishberg with Al Cohn & Bob BrookmeyerYou're A Lucky Guy ... CD
Concord, 1978. Used ... Out Of Stock
A great 70s set from vocalist Dave Frishberg – recorded with a relaxed, easygoing style that's perfect for his vocals! Dave plays piano almost as much as he sings – and on some tracks, instrumental modes dominate the first part of the tunes, then Frishberg's voice comes in and really increases the charm with his raspy, uniquely personal phrasing. But even the instrumental moments are great, thanks to solos from Al Cohn on tenor and Bob Brookmeyer on trombone – on titles that include "The Underdog", "Saratoga Hunch", "Cheerful Little Earful", "Truckin", "P Town", "I Surrender Dear", and "If Dreams Come True". ✨✧ David FrishbergLive At Vine Street ... LP
Fantasy, 1984. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A charming little set from the great Dave Frishberg – easily one of the hippest singers and songwriters in jazz during the past few decades! The set's got Dave working solo – just singing along with his own piano accompaniment – in a whimsical way that matches the same sort of energy you'd get from Blossom Dearie or Bob Dorough in a similar setting – both good comparisons, given how much each have sung some of Frishberg's tunes! And as a way of tipping his hat back, the set features a great version of Dearie's "Long Daddy Green" – plus an extended "Johnny Hodges Medley", and loads of great tunes that include "The Dear Departed Past", "Eloise", "One Horse Town", "Zanzibar", and "Blizzard Of Lies". LP, Vinyl record album

Jackie & RoyBeautiful Sea – Songs Of Sun, Sand & Sea ... CD
DRG, 1998. Used ... $1.99
A later set by Jackie & Roy, but still plenty darn great – and not nearly as hokey as you might expect from the title! All tracks are sea-themed – but the range of work is surprisingly sophisticated, and perfectly illustrates the ever-deep quality of the Jackie & Roy sound, even at a time when it would be easy for the pair to fall into simple cliches of their older work. As before, the pair display a wonderful ear for a compelling tune – and draw here on work from traditional sources, as well as the hipper end of the jazz songwriting spectrum – work by Tommy Wolf, Mark Murphy, Dave Frishberg, and even Herbie Hancock. The set includes a great vocalese take on "Dolphin Dance", the original number "Full Moon", a slight reworking of "Song Of The Boy & The Dolphins", and the tracks "Boats", "The Shining Sea", "Moon Over Miami", "Home By The Sea", "Zanzibar", and "Sand In My Shoes". ✨✧ Irene KralKral Space ... CD
Catalyst/Collectables, 1977. Used ... Out Of Stock
Hip, breezy, and wonderful – a totally hip batch of jazzy tracks with a 70s approach to the kind of underground songwriter styles used in the 60s by artists like Jackie & Roy or Bob Dorough. No surprise that Kral sings some tracks by cronies of those singers – like Tommy Wolf, Fran Landesman, and Dave Frishberg. Backing's by an acoustic quartet that features Alan Broadbent on piano and Emil Richards on vibes and percussion – and tracks include "Small Day Tomorrow", "Some Time Ago", "It's Nice Weather For Ducks", "Experiment", and "Wheelers & Dealers". ✨✧ Randy NewmanRandy Newman (second cover) ... CD
Reprise, 1969. Used ... Out Of Stock
An insanely wonderful first album from Randy Newman – and a perfect example of the way his unique style was a key confluence of all the best elements simmering underneath both late 60s LA and late 60s Warner Brothers! There's an instantly nostalgic quality to the record, but one that's nicely undercut by Newman's familiar sense of wit – a bit more subtle here, and presented with amazing backings from Van Dyke Parks – who almost brings in a lightly symphonic touch at times. The work's almost in the vein of hipper jazz sides by Bob Dorough or Dave Frishberg at the time – and although some of the tunes are familiar from later versions, they still sound best here in Randy's originals. Titles include "Love Story", "So Long Dad", "I Think He's Hiding", "Laughing Boy", "Cowboy", "The Beehive State", "Davy The Fat Boy", and "Bet No One Ever Hurt This Bad". CD

✨✧ Irene KralGentle Rain ... CD
Choice (UK), 1978. Used ... Out Of Stock
Gentle Rain, and a very gentle sound from Irene Kral – a wonderfully intimate album that has the vocalist working with only the piano of Alan Broadbent for accompaniment! Kral's always a pretty expressive singer, but she sounds especially so here – really getting a lot of space to stretch out, and inflect the tunes her own way – bringing a richly personal approach to the record, almost as if we're capturing the lyrics as snippets of overheard conversation at the end of a bar, instead of in standard vocal modes. The tracks are very well chosen too – and include versions of Dave Frishberg's "The Underdog" and "You Are There" – plus "If You Could See Me Now", "The Gentle Rain", "Blue Gardenia", and "What's New". ✨✧ Zoot SimsSuitably Zoot ... LP
Pumpkin, 1965. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Rare material by Zoot – recorded in 1965 with 2 different groups, and issued in 1979 on the tiny Pumpkin label. Half the album features a triple-tenor lineup with Zoot, Al Cohn, and Richie Kamuca – all trading lines in unfettered longer tunes with rhythm by Dave Frishberg, Tommy Potter, and Mel Lewis. The remaining tracks feature Zoot and Bob Brookmeyer in the frontline – working with Roger Kellaway, Bill Crow, and Dave Bailey on rhythm. All tracks are long, and the album's recorded with very strong sound – making the whole thing sparkle like some of Zoot's rare few live sets on bigger labels at the time. Titles include "On The Alamo", "Tickle Toe", "The King", and "Broadway". LP, Vinyl record album
