✨✧ Ron Trent Vs Lono Brazil Vs Dazzle DrumsManchild (In The Promised Land) (Ron Trent full vocal, Dazzle Drum dub) ... 12-inch
BBE (UK), 2018. New Copy ... $16.99
A triple-header of talents – all working here to make a cut that really lives up to the soulful legacy of Ron Trent! The main version begins with bubbling percussion and beats, inflected by these cosmic keyboards – while a spoken lyric gives the whole thing a strong sense of knowledge as the tune unfurls! The flipside is much more percussive – definitely the "dazzle drums" promised on the label – with a more tribal groove overall! 12-inch, Vinyl record

Elton Dean QuintetWelcomet – Live In Brazil 1986 ... CD
Ogun (UK), 1986. New Copy ... $14.99
Reedman Elton Dean recorded most famously in the 70s – but in the following decade, he still had plenty to give the world – maybe even more than before, as you'll hear in this beautiful live set from 1986! Dean's working in very open territory here – blowing saxello and alto alongside the trumpet of Harry Beckett and trombone of Paul Rutherford – both players whose sense of timing and shapes really match Elton's own work – on two very long tracks that are relatively free, but have this inherent sense of structure that really seems to come from the energy between the three horns. The drums of Liam Genockey are nicely loose at the right moments, and Marcio Mattos makes some strong contributions to the performance on bass – on two long tracks, titled "Rio Rules" and "Welcomet". ✨✧ Joao DonatoNew Sound of Brazil – The Piano Of Joao Donato ... CD
RCA/BMG (Brazil), 1965. Used ... $7.99
Darkly brilliant – and one of Joao Donato's most fantastic records! The set was recorded during Joao's time in America in the mid 60s – cut in New York with lofty backings by Claus Ogerman, in a pillowy soft mode that fits perfectly with Joao's light bossa piano lines, and which has all the hints of sadness and moodiness that often creep into his playing. The complicated approach of the album far surpasses some of Joao's work from Brazil at the same time – and the album's one of the best of its generation, a sublime mix of all elements that still sounds as fresh today as it did in 1965! Titles include "Amazonas", "Glass Beads", "Sugarcane Breeze", "Vento Do Canavail", "It Didn't End", and "O Barquinho". CD

Peven EverettMy Brazil ... CD
Studio Confessions, 2003. Used ... $6.99
A really unique record from Peven Everett – very different than most of his other work, but equally great! The "My Brazil" reference in the title hints at the style of the work – a bossa-inspired session that has Peven singing gently and soulfully, with mostly just acoustic guitar and percussion to back him up. The sound is incredible – kind of a cross between Joao Gilberto and D'Angelo – with a mellow, laidback style that's immediately infectious. The CD's only got 5 tracks – priced nice and cheap – but every track's a winner, and the album's a pure expression of genius from one of the richest living artists we stock! Titles include "Colored Culture", "Brazilian Lovers", "Innocense", "One Kiss", and "The One I Want". CD
(Note that each of these is handmade by Peven – so that the items will have a self-produced, homemade look to them that differs from CD to CD – although the music is great, and that production makes these one of a kind items!)

Joao GilbertoBrazil's Brilliant Joao Gilberto ... LP
Capitol, Early 60s. Very Good ... $14.99
This is the original US pressing of an album that was later issued by Capitol under a different name. Given that Capitol had recently linked up with the ever-growing EMI corporation in the early 60s, it was able to take advantage of the global catalog of the music giant, and managed to dip pretty heavily into the Brazilian Odeon catalog of tunes to cash in on the American popularity of bossa nova. This album was one of their bigger imports, and it features material originally recorded in Brazil, with Gilberto up front, backed by arrangements by Jobim. This is the classic material that made Gilberto's fame in the early days – and titles include "Doralice", "O Pato", "Discussao", "Outra Vez", and "Corcovado". LP, Vinyl record album
(Rainbow label pressing – nice and clean. Cover has some light wear, but is nice too.)

✨✧ Phil Moore & The Afro Latin SoultetAfro Brazil Oba! ... LP
Tower, Mid 60s. New Copy (reissue)... $9.99
A very unique little record – and one with a sublime blend of Latin, soul, and vocal styles! The record's a fair bit more sophisticated than most other efforts like this from the 60s – thanks to a strong batch of talents that includes Gil Fuller on arrangements, Phil Moore III on piano, Leni Groves on vocals – and a host of small combo players who include Joe Pass on guitar, Hadley Caliman on tenor and flute, and Francisco Aquabella on percussion! There's a warmly soulful west coast jazz sound here that's perhaps the strongest aspect of the record – a style that steps off nicely from the hipper side of LA, but throws in a few Latin influences – making for a really great sound that's totally fresh, and which really makes this record stand out from the pack! Titles include a great version of "What Is Wrong With Groovin", plus "Midnight Blue", "Batucada", "I Want Your Kiss", "Lavender Lady", and "The 8th Day". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Os Tres Brasileiros (aka Os Tres Morais)Brazil LXIX ... CD
Capitol/Universal (Japan), 1969. New Copy ... $13.99
Excellent work from Os Tres Brasileiros – better known in Brazil as Os Tres Morais! The group, like many, were a Brazilian ensemble who recorded in America under a different name – one that might be more "catchy" for the American audiences – but apart from that shift, their music is all authentic all the way – with a wonderful harmony vocal sound that follows in the tradition of Quarteto Em Cy or Tamba Trio! Even better, the album has an organist backing the group up – with sweet bubbling notes that sound a lot like the work of Walter Wanderley, and which give the album an even nicer groovy touch! The whole thing's incredible – a real treat all the way through, with great originals like "Sambamor", "Jequi-Bach", "Outono", and "Brincando De Samba" – plus sweet covers like "Days Of Wine & Roses", "Moon River", and "The Shadow Of Your Smile". ✨✧ Ritchie FamilyBrazil ... LP
20th Century, 1975. Very Good+ ... $0.99
A standout set of tropical disco tunes – one that takes its groove in 2 different ways! The whole thing was put together by producer Jacques Morali – and part of the album's got a style that nicely updates older Latin themes with a funky 70s disco groove – one that uses larger backings plus funkier rhythms, in a mode that's surprisingly solid, and very much without any of the hoke you'd expect! Philly maestro Ritchie Rome handled the arrangements on the record – which is why it sounds so sweet – and side one features nice remakes of "Peanut Vendor", "Frenesi", and "Brazil" – while side two features more Ritchie-styled vocal originals that include "Let's Pool", "Pinball", "Dance With Me", "Lady Champagne", and "Life Is Fascination". Tom ZeReturn Of Tom Ze – Hips Of Tradition – Brazil Classics 5 ... CD
Luaka Bop, 1992. Used ... $9.99
A great return for the legendary Tom Ze – an artist who'd been brought back to prominence via the efforts of a Luaka Bop compilation – then given this great chance to record for the label on his own! The set's a great return to form for Ze – who sprung from this moment into a renewed period of creative energy – really drawing on his crucial years of groundbreaking sounds in Brazil during the Tropicalia generation, and especially the 70s – when Tom had really moved off into a realm of his own. Most tracks are relatively short, and pretty enigmatic – a flurry of the sounds and verbal experiments that always made Ze so great! Titles include "Jingle Do Disco", "Cortina 3", "Amar", "Ogodo, Ano 2000", "Feira De Santana", "Fliperama", and "Tatuaramba". CD

VariousSecao Ritmica – Instrumental Funk From 70s Brazil ... CD
Atemoya, 1970s. New Copy ... $11.99 15.98
Fierce funk from 70s Brazil – tracks that easily challenge the same heavy vibe you'd know from American work in the funky 45 underground of the time, or even some of the bigger jazz funk releases of the decade! The artists here aren't inspired by the sound of bossa nova – and instead take keen inspiration from the American world of jazz and soul – which they then mix with occasional instrumental touches of their own region, and often use some wonderfully trippy production to put a really unique spin on the music! So even though these tracks are filled with heavy drums, riffing guitars, and killer keyboards – they've got a special sound that really sets them apart from the American music that first gave them inspiration – all of which makes for an incredibly fresh approach to funky styles. Titles include "Sultana" by Aquarius Band, "Eu Quero Levar Voce Pra Casa" by Ed Lincoln, "The King's Bounce" by Free Sound Orchestra, "Tio Macro" by Dom Salvador, "Kool & The Gang" by Cry Babies, "Metropole" by Cesar Mariano & CIA, "Rush" by Free Sound Orchestra, "Assalto" by Ze Rodrix, "Mr Funky Samba" by Banda Black Rio, and "Tipo Africa" by Brazil Very Happy Band. Also includes "Big Splash" by Som Orlando Silveira, "Ju Ju Man" by Hot Stuff Band, "Batucada Tropical" by Jose Prates, "Bridge" by We, "The Name Of The Game" by Os Tremendoes, and "Papa Jimmy" by Guilherme Coutinho. Far Out (UK), 2000. Used 2LP ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Possibly the best album ever by this excellent Brazilian percussive combo! The record begins the groove where the group's other albums started – by taking hard batucada rhythms, and tight samba grooves – but it also adds in a bit tighter production, and shows a marked commitment to hitting the same sort of dancefloor groove that you'd expect from other work on Far Out. Wilson Das Neves and Robertinho Silva are at the head of the percussion team – and tracks include "Roda Baiana", "Bo", "Batucumba", "Taruma", "Berimbal Capoeira", and "Read Between The Lines". Madlib takes his Medicine Show to the air – his Flight To Brazil – an 79 minute mix of Brazilian funk, psychedelia, prog and jazz from the past few decades! The set sort of finds Madlib in Beat Konducta mode, mixing myriad found sound grooves into his own tropical mind frack – from percussion heavy jams to jazzy keys, acoustic string buzzes and earthy folk funk to hazy psychedelic madness and tripped out proggy sounds! Medicine Show No 2 has nine untitled tracks, each essentially a mini suite of grooves from Madlib's Brazilian crates. CD

A sweet set of vocal tracks from Judy Roberts – a mix of original tunes and a few covers, all done with a warm fusiony style, and plenty of Brazilian touches! Judy's at the height of her powers here – partly jazzy, partly in a songstress mode that's inspired by the advances that female singers made during the 70s – stretching out in the new freedoms, but never forgetting the lyric, or a need to swing. Includes a great remake of Ivan Lins' "Common Ground", plus the tracks "Two & A Half", "Country Samba", "Save That Time", "Nights In Brazil", "I Can't Help It", and "Starlight Haunted Ballroom". One of the warmest records we've heard in years from Arnaldo Antunes – a set that no doubt gets some of its feel from the acoustic MTV setting of the performance – but one that also has a softer side of Antunes' songwriting as well! There's a wonderfully subtle vibe to the record – a feel that's almost more in the Kassin/Moreno Veloso camp than some of Arnaldo's other work – and the record actually features a guest appearance from Moreno – plus other artists who include Curumin, Nina Becker, and Liminha. ✨✧ Milton BananaAo Meu Amigo Chico ... LP
RCA (Brazil), 1975. Very Good+ ... $24.99
Joao Gilberto's favorite drummer leads his bossa trio in this great tribute to Chico Buarque. The album features 14 tracks, most of which blend together a few Buarque compositions into short groovy bossa cuts, with Milton's usual sharp jazzy drumming backing them up. Cuts include "Gente Humilde", "Ate O Fim", "Vai levando", "Pivete", "Ate Seguna Feira", "A Banda", and "Roda Viva". Nice cover too, with Milton on the front, raising a beer in a toast to Chico, who is sitting on the back cover, clearly in a different space! LP, Vinyl record album

The group's a trio, and the tracks include many nice ones by some of the better MPB composers of the 70s. Titles include "Serrado" by Djavan, "Sampa" by Caetano Veloso, "Linha De Passe" by Joao Bosco, "Meu Giri" by Chico Buarque, and "Velas Icadas" by Ivan Lins. Nice – and hard to find! A nice little 80s Brazilian jazz session, very much in the strong tradition of the Som Da Gente label. The group has a tight sax/trumpet frontline (hence the "metalurgia" name), but the overall groove is backed by some very tight percussion that goes into the batucada realm at times, and which has a nice choppy fusion feel at others. Arnaldo BaptistaLoki (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Polygram/Polysom (Brazil), 1974. New Copy (reissue)... $32.99
A freaky little solo album by Arnaldo Baptista of Os Mutantes – a set that's every bit as wild as you might guess from the cover! The album was recorded right after the first few classics by Os Mutantes – in 1974 – and Baptista wrote all of the songs, except for one, which lists "Os Mutantes" in the credits – which is an illustration of how strongly the sound of the record is tied to that group. Unlike the vocals of the group albums, though, the tracks feature Arnaldo's booze-drenched vocals right up front – with backing by piano, and some very theatrical arrangements that are quite different than the work of his earlier Tropicalia group. The record is tough to describe – sort of a mix of early 70s Euro singer/songwriter trends, particularly those of the Saravah scene – with maybe a bit of post-psych rock, with piano as the most dominant instrument in the mix. There's a surprisingly personal feel to the whole thing – and titles include "Uma Pessoa So", "Nao Estou Nem Ai", "Desculpe", "E Facil", and "Navegar De Novo". LP, Vinyl record album
