A triple-header of talents – all working here to make a cut that really lives up to the soulful legacy of Ron Trent! The main version begins with bubbling percussion and beats, inflected by these cosmic keyboards – while a spoken lyric gives the whole thing a strong sense of knowledge as the tune unfurls! The flipside is much more percussive – definitely the "dazzle drums" promised on the label – with a more tribal groove overall! 12-inch, Vinyl record

Dorival CaymmiVoice & Guitar Of Brazil's Great Dorival Caymmi ... LP
Capitol, Mid 60s. Very Good ... $11.99
A very nice album of tracks from this legendary Brazilian singer/songwriter – and one that has some great larger orchestrations, which gives the cuts an almost bossa-like sound. The record claims to have been recorded in Brazil, but it also says "produced for the USA by Dave Dexter", who was one of Capitol's big wigs in LA. We don't know if that means that the lively arrangements were added later – but who cares, as long as there's nice songs like "Rosa Morena", "Acontece Que Eu Sou Baiano", "O Dengo Que A Nega Tem", and "O Que E Que A Baiana Tem". Peven EverettMy Brazil ... CD
Studio Confessions, 2003. Used ... $5.99
A really unique record from Peven Everett – very different than most of his other work, but equally great! The "My Brazil" reference in the title hints at the style of the work – a bossa-inspired session that has Peven singing gently and soulfully, with mostly just acoustic guitar and percussion to back him up. The sound is incredible – kind of a cross between Joao Gilberto and D'Angelo – with a mellow, laidback style that's immediately infectious. The CD's only got 5 tracks – priced nice and cheap – but every track's a winner, and the album's a pure expression of genius from one of the richest living artists we stock! Titles include "Colored Culture", "Brazilian Lovers", "Innocense", "One Kiss", and "The One I Want". CD
(Note that each of these is handmade by Peven – so that the items will have a self-produced, homemade look to them that differs from CD to CD – although the music is great, and that production makes these one of a kind items!)

Joao GilbertoBrazil's Brilliant Joao Gilberto (Capitol 33 Compact 7-inch) ... 7-inch
Capitol, Early 60s. Very Good+ (pic cover)... $19.99
The original US pressing of an album that was later issued by Capitol under a different name. Given that Capitol had recently linked up with the ever-growing EMI corporation in the early 60s, it was able to take advantage of the global catalog of the music giant, and managed to dip pretty heavily into the Brazilian Odeon catalog of tunes to cash in on the American popularity of bossa nova. This album was one of their bigger imports, and it features material originally recorded in Brazil, with Gilberto up front, backed by arrangements by Jobim. This 33rpm "Capitol Compact" album features 8 tracks from the full LP – including "Doralice", "O Pato", "Discussao", "Outra Vez", and "Corcovado". 7-inch, Vinyl record
(Sleeve has light wear, aging, and a small split on the top seam.)

✨✧ Phil Moore & The Afro Latin SoultetAfro Brazil Oba! ... LP
Tower, Mid 60s. New Copy (reissue)... $9.99
A very unique little record – and one with a sublime blend of Latin, soul, and vocal styles! The record's a fair bit more sophisticated than most other efforts like this from the 60s – thanks to a strong batch of talents that includes Gil Fuller on arrangements, Phil Moore III on piano, Leni Groves on vocals – and a host of small combo players who include Joe Pass on guitar, Hadley Caliman on tenor and flute, and Francisco Aquabella on percussion! There's a warmly soulful west coast jazz sound here that's perhaps the strongest aspect of the record – a style that steps off nicely from the hipper side of LA, but throws in a few Latin influences – making for a really great sound that's totally fresh, and which really makes this record stand out from the pack! Titles include a great version of "What Is Wrong With Groovin", plus "Midnight Blue", "Batucada", "I Want Your Kiss", "Lavender Lady", and "The 8th Day". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Os Tres Brasileiros (aka Os Tres Morais)Brazil LXIX ... CD
Capitol/Universal (Japan), 1969. New Copy ... $13.99
Excellent work from Os Tres Brasileiros – better known in Brazil as Os Tres Morais! The group, like many, were a Brazilian ensemble who recorded in America under a different name – one that might be more "catchy" for the American audiences – but apart from that shift, their music is all authentic all the way – with a wonderful harmony vocal sound that follows in the tradition of Quarteto Em Cy or Tamba Trio! Even better, the album has an organist backing the group up – with sweet bubbling notes that sound a lot like the work of Walter Wanderley, and which give the album an even nicer groovy touch! The whole thing's incredible – a real treat all the way through, with great originals like "Sambamor", "Jequi-Bach", "Outono", and "Brincando De Samba" – plus sweet covers like "Days Of Wine & Roses", "Moon River", and "The Shadow Of Your Smile". A great return for the legendary Tom Ze – an artist who'd been brought back to prominence via the efforts of a Luaka Bop compilation – then given this great chance to record for the label on his own! The set's a great return to form for Ze – who sprung from this moment into a renewed period of creative energy – really drawing on his crucial years of groundbreaking sounds in Brazil during the Tropicalia generation, and especially the 70s – when Tom had really moved off into a realm of his own. Most tracks are relatively short, and pretty enigmatic – a flurry of the sounds and verbal experiments that always made Ze so great! Fly/Sire, 1989. Very Good+ ... $19.99
The first-ever record in the Luaka Bop legacy – a massive collection of Brazilian grooves that still serves as one of the best introductions to the music we can think of! Most of the artists here are the bigger names of the MPB generation of the 70s – but many are still very under-represented in the US market – which makes the collection of work here completely essential. The styles range from samba soul of Jorge Ben to the lyrical poetry of Caetano Veloso to the soulful drama of Milton Nascimento – and titles include "Ponta De Lanca Africano" and "Fio Varavilha" by Jorge Ben, "Cacada" by Chico Buarque, "Quilombo O El Dorado Negro" and "So Quero Um Xodo" by Gilberto Gil, "Quiexa" and "O Leaozinho" by Caetano Veloso, "Sonho Meu" by Maria Bethania & Gal Costa, "Caixa De Sol" by Nazare Pereira, and "Anima" by Milton Nascimento. An excellent album of Brazilian tracks – and one that also happens to be a benefit for the street children of Brazil! Mr. Bongo have put together the set to benefit the unfortunate children in a culture that they've helped bring to the world in a better light – and as with all Mr. Bongo titles, the quality is excellent, and the set's filled with some of the best recent Brazilian recordings around! There's a total of 14 tracks that mix up styles from hard batucada rhythms to spare bossa nova to blinding modern remixes – and titles include "Strange Messages" by Luis Bonfa & Lord K, "Sem Terra (Landless)" by Dom Um Romao, "Batmacumba" by Ile Aye, "Capoeira Um" by Filhos Do Capoira, "Maracangalha" by Joyce, "Street Angles" by Danilo Caymmi & Marcelo Salazar, "Think About The Children" by Banda Black Rio & Clave De Soul, "O Cellular De nana" by Otto, and a remake of Joao Donato's funky "Cala Boca Menino" by Ithamara Koorax & Banco Musical Studio Allstars! AirtoAlue ... CD
Sesac (Brazil), 2018. New Copy ... $16.99
One of the greatest albums in years from percussion Airto Moreira – a set that really lives up to the complex sort of grooves he first brought to our shores in the 70s! Airto's back home in Brazil for this set, and working with a really great lineup – a group that's heavy on acoustic elements, and which takes the musician back to the soaring spirit of his work in Quarteto Novo, and that time when both he and Hermeto Pascoal were getting the chance to start recording in America as well! There's none of the later fusion modes going on here – and production is nice and open, very organic – really allowing a fantastic flow from the mix of percussion, flute, guitar, saxes, and piano on the tunes. Honestly, the whole thing reminds us more of the album Seeds On The Ground or Natural Forces than it does most of Airto's records in later years – and titles include "Rosa Negra", "Misturada", "Alue", "Guarany", "Sea Horse", "Lua Flora", and "Nao Sei Pra Onde Mas Vai". Fermata/Discobertas (Brazil), 1968. New Copy ... $16.99
A Brazilian instrumental rock combo from the 60s, and one who are equally heavy on horns as they are on guitars – all of which makes for a mighty cool sound overall! The group's a biggish one – with tenor sax, trumpet, and baritone stepping out next to driving drums, bass, and electric guitar – all on fast-moving tunes that are handled in the way that surf rock might in the US scene of the 60s, but with all these different twists and turns, given the instrumentation! There's a few moments where the group seem to vocalize wordlessly, but mostly the voices here are those from the horns and guitar – on tunes that include the original "Maldade", plus versions of "Cornflake", "Harley Davidson", "Zabadak", "Raunchy", "Valley Of The Dolls", and "Happiness Is". Arnaldo AntunesRSTUVXZ ... CD
Pommelo (Brazil), 2018. New Copy ... $19.99
Fantastic work from one of the most creatively consistent talents in Brazilian music – and a record that really hangs on to all the early genius that Arnaldo Antunes brought to his music! The sense of language here is almost enough to make us love the record – the way that Antunes borrows structures and shapes from modernist poetry, to put together the words of his tunes almost like miniature sculptures – yet still manages to make them sound beautifully tuneful, and very down to earth – thanks in part to the album's mix of samba rhythms and guitar-based rock – hinted at slightly on the cover. The more acoustic numbers are especially wonderful – that special blend of modern ideas and humanism that we seem to find most strongly in the music of Brazil. Titles include "Se Precave", "A Samba", "Amanha So Amanha", "Eu Todo Mundo", "Pense Duas Vezes Antes De Esquecer", "Tambem Pede Bis", "Ceu Contra O Muro", and "De Trem De Carro Ou A Pe". CD

Far Out (Brazil), 1975. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99
A record with an unusual source, but a sound that puts it right up there with some of the most heavenly rare Brazilian albums of the 70s – served up here in a folksy, jazzy mix of acoustic and electric elements – all with help from heavyweights who include Victor Assis Brasil, Mauricio Einhorn, Durval Ferreira, and the Azymuth trio! The songs are based around creations by a Brazilian comedy duo, but they hardly sound anything like that at all – as they're easy-going, mellow-grooving, and have these vocals that flow beautifully amidst percussion, guitar, and keyboards! There are two monologue tracks in Portuguese – both with audience laughter – but all other tracks are sung, and delivered with some wonderful arrangements by Jose Roberto Bertrami and Jose Menezes. Titles include "Negra Brecho", "Ao Billilico", "Tema Do Azambuja", "A Turma", "Verde", "Maristela", and "O Poste Da Rua Jorge De Lima". LP, Vinyl record album

CID/Far Out (Brazil), 1974. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99
A very weird record – and an odd parody of both Os Novos Baianos and Caetano Veloso! The album's recorded live, and it's very much in the spirit of early work by Os Novos Baianos – with loads of tunes that have a funky samba style, with some nice rough touches – but there's also a laugh track to the set, clearly marking the record as a comedy effort! From what we know, the set's a parody of the artists named in the title, and their laidback approach to music – but since we can't really understand the lyrics, we just enjoy the grooves – as the record's got plenty of strong rootsy groovers that stand out, even if you can't get the jokes! An excellent album by one of the greatest Brazilian funk bands ever – a wonderful blend of funk, jazz, and soul – and a set that rivals any of the best work coming from the US at the time! These guys are right on the money right from the start – moving through sharp changes with effortless ease, yet never in a way that's too slick or commercial – kind of like that perfect balance that Kool & The Gang hit for just a few records in the mid 70s – but with more of a Brazilian feel overall. Jazzy licks abound – and the keyboards, guitar, and horns are just great – but the set's also got some more regional percussion, too – which really rounds out the record wonderfully. The grooves all have a really universal appeal – essential for any fan of funky sounds – and titles include "Mr Funky Samba", "Junia", "Casa Forte", "Na Baixa Do Sapateiro", "Lelbon Via Vaz Lobo", "Baia", "Maria Fumaca", and "Metalurgia". As with some of the other jovem guarda groups of the period, these guys lean heavily on influences from America and England – singing songs here by The Beatles, Bobby Darin, and others – but as with the best of this scene, there's also something different special going on too – almost as if the songs are little pop music fantasies of life up north – trying hard, but never getting things entirely right – and therein lies the charm! Som Livre/Discobertas (Brazil), Late 70s/Early 80s. Used ... $44.99
Four albums from the second chapter in the career of Jorge Ben – packaged here in a single set, with a few bonus tracks too! First up is A Banda Do Ze Preinho – a record that's funky, soulful, and totally wonderful – a wicked late 70s live set from Jorge Ben – and one of his few post-Philips albums that really holds onto the best energy from earlier years! The date's a live one, and the group grooves in a style that's got plenty of Africa Brasil touches – mixed with some other soulful and funky modes too – always great for Jorge's wonderful vocals, especially on some of the earthier tracks. The production is nice and lean – with a core focus on Jorge's great voice, and the funky instrumentation of the band – which really lets the fantastic sound of the record come through strongly, without some of the heavier elements on some of Jorge's 80s records. The whole thing's great – and titles include "Troca Troca", "Bom Dia, Boa Tarde Boa Noite Amor", "A Banda Do Ze Pretinho", "Denize Rei", "Berenice", "Amante Amado", and "Era Uma Vez Treze". Salve Simpatia is late 70s funky soul from Jorge Ben – a record that tightens up the sound a bit from his earlier years on Philips – but still keeps in all the core elements we love so much! The tracks bounce along with a tight samba soul approach that's built very much on Jorge's earlier experiments – handled with a bit more modern soul on the arrangements, but in a way that only makes the grooves come across more directly – in a style that's akin to some other Brazilian artists who were shifting more soul towards soul from other styles at the time – such as Marcos Valle and some of his contemporaries. Titles include "Salve Simpatia", "Ive Brussel", "Waldomiro Pena", "Adelita", "Occulatus Abis", and "Menina Crioula". Alo Alo Como Vai has Jorge working in a smoother vein than on his Philips sides, with the same sort of modern soul approach that Marcos Valle and other older Brazilian singers were using at the time. But since Jorge's always been a soulster from the start, the style works perfectly for his warm vocals and his keen talent for putting over a groove. Arrangements have kind of a brassy funky samba groove – and titles include "Ma Ma Ma Ma Mae", "Solitario Surfista", "Olha A Pipa", "Cae Cae Caetano", "Alo Alo, Como Vai?", and "A Cegohna Me Deixou Em Mardureira". Bem Vinda Amizade is an 80s groover with a sound that's a bit of a change from his 70s classics! The backings show Ben picking up some modern soul elements from the US scene of the time – but these are also mixed with some rougher, rhythmic styles that are definitely Brazilian – which makes for a really compelling blend – quite similar to the samba and soul mix of Jorge's 70s records, but tuned towards the ears of a different generation overall. Bits of boogie mix in to the groove nicely – and titles include "Katarina Katarina", "Para Que Digladiar", "Santa Clara Clareou", "O Diam Em Que O Sol Declarou O Seu Amor Pela Terra", "Lorraine", and "Luiz Wagner Guitarreiro". CD set features 3 bonus tracks – "Natal Brasileiro", "Waimea 55,000", and "Saci Perere". CD

A great set that features mostly material from Jorge's classic early years at Philips – plus a few more titles of recent vintage! A samba soul masterpiece from Jorge Ben – one of the most brilliant records to come out the fertile late 60s Brazilian scene – and an incredible album that works with the psychedelic flourishes of Ben's contemporaries and a deeper undercurrent of soul & funk! This is one of the most amazing early Jorge Ben LPs, recorded at the end of the 60s, when Jorge was singing with a stone-cold soul sound. The sharp, tight arrangements by Rogerio Duprat & Jose Briamonte made tracks like "Pais Tropical", "Take It Easy My Brother Charles", and "Que Pena" immediate classics – while the percussion and rhythms of Trio Mocoto provide a good part of the unique backdrop. The album is a mix of funky samba, soaring Brazilian soul, and sweeping orchestrations that give the whole thing a jazzy finish – and it's some of the best work that Jorge Ben ever recorded! Other tracks include "Criola", Cade Tereza", "Domingas", "Barbarella", "Quem Foi Que Roubou A Sopeira" and more. CD

One of Jorge Ben's greatest albums – a groundbreaking blend of samba and soul that forever went onto transform the face of Brazilian music! The record works off the groove set down by Jorge's earlier hit "Mas Que Nada" (which appears on another LP), and takes the blend of bossa, samba, and jazz, and infuses it with a sense of folksy soul delivered by Jorge's raspy vocals and acoustic guitar work. The combination of styles works perfectly – and every track on the album sparkles with a sense of excitement and new musical discovery that will probably blow away most of the recent records you've bought for your collection! Philips/Polysom (Brazil), 1963. New Copy (reissue)... $32.99
The start of an amazing legacy in Brazilian music – and a record that really lives up to its title! Jorge Ben completely reinvents the samba here – and comes up with his own new groove in the process – by blending sharp acoustic guitar lines with rootsy percussion – all at a level that's far more rhythmic than the used of the instrument in bossa nova. There's definitely a bossa element – but Joao's singing is a lot more soulful, as is the overall performance – and the styles started here not only launched Ben's career, but also had a huge influence on generations of musicians to come! Titles include the sublime original version of "Mas Que Nada" - plus "Tim Dom Dom", "Chove Chuva", "A Tamba", "Balanca Pema", and "Rosa Menina Rosa". Great stuff, and essential all the way through – we promise! LP, Vinyl record album

Searing samba soul from Jorge Ben – one of his best-remembered albums of the 70s, and for good reason too! The album's got a slightly fuller feel than some of Ben's other work of the time – never slick, but with backings balanced nicely against his own raspy vocals and acoustic guitar – sweetening things up with a bit of the strings you'd find on Forca Bruta, but with a hint of the soul to come on Africa Brasil! The balance is great – thanks to arrangers Osmar Milito, Darcy De Paulo, and Hugo Bellard – and as usual, Jorge's vocals are the main attraction – dipping, turning, and rising with this really unique, personal feel – Ben-like brilliance at its brightest. The whole thing's wonderful – a key gem from the Philips years – and titles include "Cinco Minutos", "Zumbi", "Brother", "Os Alquimistas Estao Chegando Os Alquimistas", "Errare Humanum Est", "Menina Muler Da Pele Preta", "Hermes Tri", and "O Namorado Da Viuva". Strong work by Maria Bethania from the late 70s – a session that has her tightening up her sound a bit more than before, but without any loss of her sense of drama or emotion! The album was recorded with a number of different musical backgrounds, including many small group settings with guitar by Rosinha De Valenca – an artist we love on her own, and who adds in a nicely personal touch to this album's mix of strings, keyboards, and rootsier percussion. The guitar works nicely with Maria's voice, and is perhaps second in the mix behind her singing – giving the songs a nice focus even when the backings are quite large. Songs are a mix of tunes by Gilberto Gil, Chico Buarque, Caetano Veloso, and other likely suspects – and titles include "Calice", "Interior", "De Todas As Maneiras", "O Meu Amor", "Ronda", and "Diamante Verdadeiro". Beautiful work from Joao Bosco – a bit later than his classic years, but a sublime set all the way through – and one that's overflowing with jazzier influences! Joao's got a sound here that actually seems a bit influenced by the growth in Brazilian jazz at the time – a style that's clear in the humming, almost scatting quality to his vocals – and in the way that his guitar work mixes older folsky styles with tones and colors that ring out with inspiration from the fusion generation – even though they're played on an acoustic instrument. The whole thing's great – spare, personal, but deeply compelling – and with a highly rhythmic component on most numbers. Easily one of our favorite by Bosco – and a real delight throughout! Maybe one of the best-remembered albums from the legendary 70s run of Joao Bosco – a set that manages to bring together jazzy instrumentation, samba rhythms, folksy elements, and a whole new level of songwriting – all in a blend that beautifully announces Bosco's genius to the world! There's a level of expression here that rivals Caetano Veloso or Ivan Lins – and like those giants of Brazilian music, the sound here is almost Bosco's genre unto itself – a wonderfully strong expression of new ideas, done in close collaboration with songwriter Aldir Blanc. Cesar Camargo Mariano handles arrangements and keyboards – which makes for more than a few jazzy and groovy moments – especially on the cuts "Nessa Data" and "Casa De Marimbondo", plus the classic "Kid Cavaquinho". Elizeth Cardoso & Ciro MonteiroA Bossa Eterna de Elizeth e Ciro Vol 1 ... LP
Copacabana (Brazil), 1966. Very Good ... $34.99
A beautiful set of duets from 60s samba stars Elizeth Cardoso and Ciro Monteiro – released in collaboration with the Bossaudade TV show! The sound here is light and lively – with backing from Caculinha and his combo, who mix together acoustic samba rhythms with a nice touch of electric organ – for a sound that's got some nice Walter Wanderley elements, but still retains a strong samba groove, with plenty of choppy bandolim in the arrangements. Elizeth and Ciro duet on a number of tracks – including a few longer "pout-pourri" medleys, and they each sing a few numbers on their own as well. Titles include "Melancolia", "Franqueza", "Beija-Me", "Se Acaso Voce Chegasse", and "Tem Que Rebolar". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original pressing! Nice and clean overall.)

Erasmo CarlosErasmo Carlos 1968 (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Columbia/Polysom (Brazil), 1968. New Copy (reissue)... $23.99
A really compelling record from Erasmo Carlos – recorded in that crucial Brazilian music year of 1968! At some level, the record's got the crossover pop modes of Carlos from earlier in his career – but as you might guess from the cover, there's also some occasional deeper ideas going on too – especially on some of the rhythms, which move along in that blend of funky and baroque styles that were coming into play during the best of the EMI/Odeon sessions of the time. Arrangements are by Os Tremendoes on about half the record, and they do a great job – and others are by Laercio De Freitas and Vicente Salivia – all of whom really move Carlos past the simpler sounds of the jovem guarda years. Titles include a nice take on the haunting Tim Maia tune "Nao Quero Nem Saber" – plus "Senhor Aqui Estou", "Mil Bikinis", "Todas As Mulheres Do Mundo", "Baby Baby", "A Proxima Danca", "Para O Diabo Os Conselhos De Voces", and "Vou Chorar Vou Chorar Vou Chorar". CarminhoCarminho Canta Tom Jobim ... CD
Biscoito Fino (Brazil), 2016. New Copy ... $16.99
The cover image makes it look like Carminho's a contemporary of Antonio Carlos Jobim – but she's actually a much younger artist – a great contemporary fado vocalist, who serves up some very unusual readings of classic songs by the bossa legend! Carminho's way of phrasing is very different than most bossa nova singers – filled with more expressive elements at times, but never in a way that overwhelms the music – just shifts it into a space that's all her own, even amidst faithful arrangements by Paulo Jobim, who plays guitar on the record along with Daniel Jobim on piano and Jaques Morelenbaum on cello. With that instrumental pedigree, you can guess the care that went into the session – and Carminho's unique approach really makes for a special album – one that's way more than just another rehash of Jobim's compositions. The set features guest appearances from Marias Monte, Chico Buarque, and Maria Bethania – and titles include "O Que Tinha De Ser", "Estrada Do Sol", "Triste", "Falando De Amor", "Wave", "Sabia", "Luiza", "Modinha", A Felicidade", and "O Grande Amor". CartolaDocument Inedito ... LP
Eldorado (Brazil), Mid 70s. Near Mint- ... $9.99
The title gets it right – as the set's much more of a document of Cartola's talents than some of his other later albums – as the format features some spoken interview passages, mixed with examples of his music! Each track seems to have about a minute of Cartola speaking, in Portuguese, then moves into some very intimate musical moments – very nice stuff that's in the spirit of his best later recordings, but perhaps even more personal. Titles include "Senoes", "Acontece", "Quem Me Ve Sorrindo", "Autonomia", and "Quem Me Ve Sorrindo". LP, Vinyl record album

Cartola & OthersHistoria Da Musica Popular Brasileira (12 inch LP & booklet) ... LP
Abril Cultural (Brazil), 1982. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $19.99
A great document of the work of Cartola – the aging samba singer who was being strongly rediscovered in the 70s! Like other albums in this series, this one comes with an excellent booklet – featuring 8 pages with color photos of Cartola, and writing on his music in Portuguese. 12 tracks in all, and like others in this series, there's interpretations by a number of different artists – including "Divina Dama" by Francisco Alves, "Acontece" by Gal Costa, "O Sol Nascera" by Nara Leao, "Nao Quero Mais Amar A Ninguem" by Paulinho Da Viola, "Autonomia" by Elizeth Cardoso and "O Mundo E Um Moinho", "As Rosas Nao Falam" and "Ensaboa" by Cartola himself. Beth CarvalhoPandeiro E Viola ... CD
Tapecar/Ultra Vybe (Brazil), 1975. New Copy ... $13.99
The title's no lie, as the album features plenty of guitar and percussion next to the great vocals of Beth Carvalho – just the sort of lively samba backings that make her 70s albums so wonderful! There's a stripped-down, no-nonsense approach to the set – that surprisingly rootsy approach that was often used on the best samba albums of the generation – in ways that makes them instantly timeless, especially when graced with such a strong lead singer as Beth! Carvalho's voce is incredible – expressive, but without ever being overdone – with a soulful depth that grabs us right away, and holds us rapt throughout the entire record. Titles include "Gota D'Agua", "Cansaco", "Sente O Peso Do Couro", "O Dia De Amanha", "So Queria Ser Feliz", and "Pandeiro E Viola". CD
