Tania Maria And The Viva Brazil QuartetLive At The Blue Note ... CD
Concord, 2002. Used ... $5.99
A stunning live set from Tania Maria – recorded with her Viva Brazil combo in a mode that's very similar to her classic recordings from 70s France! The sound here is great – Tania on keyboards and vocals, with backing only from bass, drums, and percussion – a spare framework that allows Tania to groove in a free and breezy way over the album's long tracks. The result is an instant classic – one of Tania's best records in years, and a delight throughout, especially if you dig her older albums! Titles include "Granada", "Quase", "Funky Tamborim", "Florzinha", "E Carnaval", and "Valen". CD

Charlie ByrdByrd & Brazil (Sugarloaf Suite/Brazilville) ... CD
Concord, 1980/1982. Used 2 CDs ... $2.99
Two older Concord albums from guitarist Charlie Byrd – back to back in a single set! First up is Sugarloaf Suite – a trio date that features Byrd's wonderful acoustic guitar, playing lots of Brazilian-tinged sounds – with help from Joe Byrd on bass and Wayne Phillips on drums! Titles include "Favela", "Triste", "Primeira Palavra", "Saudade De Bahia", and "Meninas Brincando". Next up is Brazilville – a record that adds in some sweet alto sax, courtesy of Bud Shank – played with all the great bossa tones that Bud brought to older work with guitarists like Laurindo Almeida and Joe Pass! The album's got a relatively spare setting – Shank on alto, Byrd on guitar, Joe Byrd on bass, and Charles Redd on drums – and titles include "Zingaro", "Speak Low", "Brazilville", "What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life", and "Saquarema". Elton Dean QuintetWelcomet – Live In Brazil 1986 ... CD
Ogun (UK), 1986. New Copy ... $14.99
Reedman Elton Dean recorded most famously in the 70s – but in the following decade, he still had plenty to give the world – maybe even more than before, as you'll hear in this beautiful live set from 1986! Dean's working in very open territory here – blowing saxello and alto alongside the trumpet of Harry Beckett and trombone of Paul Rutherford – both players whose sense of timing and shapes really match Elton's own work – on two very long tracks that are relatively free, but have this inherent sense of structure that really seems to come from the energy between the three horns. The drums of Liam Genockey are nicely loose at the right moments, and Marcio Mattos makes some strong contributions to the performance on bass – on two long tracks, titled "Rio Rules" and "Welcomet". Peven EverettMy Brazil ... CD
Studio Confessions, 2003. Used ... $11.99
A really unique record from Peven Everett – very different than most of his other work, but equally great! The "My Brazil" reference in the title hints at the style of the work – a bossa-inspired session that has Peven singing gently and soulfully, with mostly just acoustic guitar and percussion to back him up. The sound is incredible – kind of a cross between Joao Gilberto and D'Angelo – with a mellow, laidback style that's immediately infectious. The CD's only got 5 tracks – priced nice and cheap – but every track's a winner, and the album's a pure expression of genius from one of the richest living artists we stock! Titles include "Colored Culture", "Brazilian Lovers", "Innocense", "One Kiss", and "The One I Want". CD
(Note that each of these is handmade by Peven – so that the items will have a self-produced, homemade look to them that differs from CD to CD – although the music is great, and that production makes these one of a kind items!)

Joao GilbertoBrazil's Brilliant Joao Gilberto ... LP
Capitol, Early 60s. Very Good ... $16.99
This is the original US pressing of an album that was later issued by Capitol under a different name. Given that Capitol had recently linked up with the ever-growing EMI corporation in the early 60s, it was able to take advantage of the global catalog of the music giant, and managed to dip pretty heavily into the Brazilian Odeon catalog of tunes to cash in on the American popularity of bossa nova. This album was one of their bigger imports, and it features material originally recorded in Brazil, with Gilberto up front, backed by arrangements by Jobim. This is the classic material that made Gilberto's fame in the early days – and titles include "Doralice", "O Pato", "Discussao", "Outra Vez", and "Corcovado". LP, Vinyl record album
(Rainbow label pressing! Cover has light wear with a touch of marker & an address sticker on the back.)

Herbie MannBrazil, Bossa Nova, & Blues ... LP
United Artists, 1962. Very Good ... $5.99
Bossa nova from Herbie Mann – one of our favorite albums ever from the famous flute player – cut for United Artists, and a one-off session that's arguably better than most of his Atlantic work of the time! There's a groove here that's undeniable – a sense of swing that grabs us right from the get-go, and makes us totally love each new track before Mann's flute even comes into the mix! These grooves come from some great interplay between Dave Pike on marimbas, Haygood Hardy on vibes, Billy Bean on guitar, and a host of hip percussionists who include Willie Bobo, Carmen Costa, and Carlos Patato Valdez! Tracks are long, with a Joao Donato-like sense of space – similar to Pike's excellent bossa work for Prestige around the same time – which makes a perfect settion for Herbie's soulful flute. The whole thing's wonderful, and titles include "Me Faz Recordar", "Minha Saudade", "Copacabana", "Brazil", and "BN Blues". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original pressing in the textured cover.)

Herbie MannHerbie Mann's Big Band – Recorded Live In Brazil (aka Jazz Committee For Latin American Affairs) ... LP
Surrey, Early 60s. Very Good+ ... $4.99
An obscure package for a pretty obscure set to begin with – the famous Jazz Committee For Latin American Affairs album! The set is stone cooking hardbop – done with all the sharp edges of a New York session, even though the material was recorded live in Rio! The setting is an unusual one – a State Department tour of American jazz musicians – but a lineup that moves way past some of the overly-mainstream "ambassadors" out there – given that the players include Kenny Dorham on trumpet, Zoot Sims and Al Cohn on tenors, Curtis Fuller on trombone, Herbie Mann on flute, and even Ahmed Abdul-Malik on oud! Tracks are nice and long – very much in a jam session mode on the best numbers, but mixed with some well-played mellower moments too – and titles include "Wee Dot", "Red Door", "Autumn Leaves", and the haunting original "Ismaaa", which has a great Eastern feel, thanks to the oud! ✨✧ Phil Moore & The Afro Latin SoultetAfro Brazil Oba! ... LP
Tower, Mid 60s. Near Mint- ... $9.99
A very unique little record – and one with a sublime blend of Latin, soul, and vocal styles! The record's a fair bit more sophisticated than most other efforts like this from the 60s – thanks to a strong batch of talents that includes Gil Fuller on arrangements, Phil Moore III on piano, Leni Groves on vocals – and a host of small combo players who include Joe Pass on guitar, Hadley Caliman on tenor and flute, and Francisco Aquabella on percussion! There's a warmly soulful west coast jazz sound here that's perhaps the strongest aspect of the record – a style that steps off nicely from the hipper side of LA, but throws in a few Latin influences – making for a really great sound that's totally fresh, and which really makes this record stand out from the pack! Titles include a great version of "What Is Wrong With Groovin", plus "Midnight Blue", "Batucada", "I Want Your Kiss", "Lavender Lady", and "The 8th Day". LP, Vinyl record album

Bud ShankBrazil! Brazil! Brazil! ... LP
World Pacific, Mid 60s. Very Good ... $6.99
As if the screaming title didn't tell you enough, the album features Shank's Brazilian sides – apparently culled from his Pacific Jazz recordings from the 50s and 60s, featuring players that range from Laurindo Almeida to Chet Baker to Joe Pass, Clare Fischer, and Joao Donato. Bud's always at his best in these moments – and heck, some say he even invented the format! Titles include "If I Should Lose You", "Carioca Hills", "Summer Samba", "Elizete", "Nocturno", "Sausalito", "Otem A Note", and "Samba Do Aviao". LP, Vinyl record album

Kunihiko SuganoOpa Brazil ... CD
Trio/Solid (Japan), 1978. New Copy ... $22.99
A really groovy album from pianist Kunihiko Sugano – a set that has the leader working on Fender Rhodes, but often with a touch that has the sharpness of an acoustic piano – which is then underscored by some strong use of acoustic percussion as well! The album's definitely got the bossa flavor promised in the title – kind of a post-bossa version of the bossa jazz trio style of the 60s – a bit like the records that Tamba Trio and Milton Banana were cutting in the 70s, but maybe even better overall! The percussionists are all great – the album features five of them, all Brazilian – and they work alongside bassist Toni Botero and drummer Elis Siabo. Titles include "Samba Medley", "Mood Island", "UFO", "Midnight Sun Never Set", and "Diane". CD

✨✧ VariousTropicalia 30 Anos ... CD
Sony (Brazil), 1997. Used ... Out Of Stock
Very cool new compilation that features modern versions of Tropicalia classics from the late 60's, with performances by many of the artists who made the movement happen in the first place! The CD includes 13 cuts, including versions of "Tropicalia" by Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, & Tom Ze; "Divino Maravilhoso" by Gal Costa, "Atras Do Trio Eletrico" by Moraes Moreira, "Alegria, Alegria" by Daniela Mercury, "Bat Macumba" by Ile Aye, and "Soy Loco Por Ti America" by Araketu! The set's packaged in a cool sleeve with lots of colorful images in collage, and lyrics to all the songs. And in case you're wondering, the production standards are good, and not too poppy. The stuff's not as tripped out as it was in the 60's, but the set's still a great tribute to some of the greatest Brazilian songs of all time. CD

Grupo AguaTransparencia ... CD
Som Livre/Discobertas (Brazil), 1978. New Copy ... $16.99
The cover image has a nicely rough-edged quality, and the music inside does too – a really organic statement of genius from Brazil's Grupo Agua! The group play very close to their roots – mixing quick acoustic guitars and percussion in a level that almost feels Spanish in its complexity, but which definitely has a more South American vibe overall – especially when wood flute is added into the mix, which creates a further lyrical level alongside their vocals! These guys are hardly the touristy sound of the 60s Andean music boom – and instead, they seem to take all the currents of that sound, add in a hip 70s sense of harmony, and really send the music forward with a freewheeling vibe that's very unique. The album has echoes of the 70s rootsy folk movement with some of the more underground work in Brazil – but it's also completely unlike anything else we've ever heard. Titles include "La Luna Llena", "Esperanzas", "El Colibri", "Volver A Los 17", "Tarkeada", "Caldera", and "La Semilia". CD

Leny AndradeAlvoroco ... CD
Odeon/Joia Moderna (Brazil), 1973. New Copy ... $18.99
One of the coolest albums ever from Brazilian singer Leny Andrae – a set that takes her way past the usual jazz and bossa of other records, into territory that's completely sublime! The record features arrangements from some of the most sophisticated talents of the early 70s scene in Brazil – Arthur Verocai, Wagner Tiso, and Francis Hime – all artists who take Leny's amazing voice into territory that's spacious and majestic, but which still manages to groove – with that special sort of balance you'll find in Verocai's legendary album from the same period, and maybe on EMI/Odeon material by artists like Marcos Valle or Edu Lobo. Maestro Gaya handles the orchestra – bringing the same incredible skill to the record he brings to other Odeon sessions – and titles include "Postal", "Alvoroco", "Moto 1", "Bolero", "Pingos De Sol", "O Lobo Na Estepe", and "Nao Adianta". One of the warmest records we've heard in years from Arnaldo Antunes – a set that no doubt gets some of its feel from the acoustic MTV setting of the performance – but one that also has a softer side of Antunes' songwriting as well! There's a wonderfully subtle vibe to the record – a feel that's almost more in the Kassin/Moreno Veloso camp than some of Arnaldo's other work – and the record actually features a guest appearance from Moreno – plus other artists who include Curumin, Nina Becker, and Liminha. Titles include "A Casa E Sua", "Engrenagem", "Pop Zen", "O Seu Olhar", "Alma", "Sem Voce", "Se Assim Quiser", and "Musica Para Ouvrir". CD
