Jazz Doctors (Billy Bang/Frank Lowe)Intensive Care ... LP
Cadillac (UK), 1984. New Copy (reissue)... $26.99 32.99
Forget the hokey pun in the title, as the album's a sharp-edged set that has way more going on than that bad wit might imply – a brilliant record that has the same sort of post-loft vibe as some of the best Black Saint/Soul Note sessions from the time! The group here features players who worked on many of those records too – the mighty Billy Bang on violin, sounding incredible, and so different than generations of others touching that instrument in jazz – sharp, soulful, and almost "blown" more like a saxophone! Frank Lowe's tenor follows with a similarly bold voice – and the group features very urgent work on bass from Rafael Garrett and drums from Dennis Charles. Titles include great readings of Jackie McLean's "Little Melonae" and Ornette Coleman's "Lonely Woman" – plus the tracks "Loweology", "Ballad With One L", and "Blood On The Cross". Amy Sheffer/Billy Bang/William Parker/Lou GrassiDrone Bone ... CD
Amy Sheffer, 2023. New Copy ... $11.99 13.99
Vocalist Amy Sheffer works with an all-star cast here – a very cool quartet that includes Billy Bang on violin, William Parker on bass, and Lou Grassi on drums! Bang is especially great, and his work on violin often recalls the spirit of the 80s work that really made us fall in love with his music – a great companion to the offbeat vocalizations of Sheffer, who certainly channels some of the more groundbreaking vocal jazz modes that emerged from the 70s scene onwards. The tracks were recorded in 2001, and some just feature Sheffer's voice with drums – on titles that include "You Rise", "Words From TS", "Drone Bone", "Improv", "Museeum", "Hovering", and "Bleddidit". ✨✧ Billy BangVietnam – Reflections ... CD
Justin Time, 2005. Used ... Out Of Stock
A beautiful follow-up to Billy Bang's Vietnam: The Aftermath – one that revisits Bang's experience in Vietnam with an even more thoughtful, more introspective approach! The scope of the work is really wonderful – a rich array of colors and tones, arranged by Bang and woven out of his own compositions and a few traditional Vietnamese numbers. Players on the set include James Spaulding on alto and flute, Henry Threadgill on flute, John Hicks on piano, Curtis Lundy on bass, and Michael Carvin on drums – and the set also features some beautiful Vietnamese vocals on a few numbers too. Titles include "Ru Con", "Lock & Load", "Waltz Of The Water Puppets", "Trong Comb", "Reconciliation", "Doi Moi", and "Reflections". CD

✨✧ Billy Bang's Survival EnsembleBlack Man's Blues ... LP
No Business (Lithuania), 1977. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A really amazing performance from Billy Bang – cut during some of his most creative years on the New York loft jazz scene, at a time when Bang was carving out a rich new space for his instrument in jazz – and helping move forward a very creative generation of musicians as well! The lineup here includes Bilal Abdur Rahman on tenor and soprano sax, William Parker on bass, Rashid Bakr on drums – along with Bang's violin, bells, shaker, and percussion. But almost even more compelling are a few spoken passages from Billy – extremely proud, righteous words, spoken with assurance that really sends them home – and which helps the album stand out strongly in the genre of jazz and spoken word. Not all tracks feature spoken bits, but when they appear, they're great – and titles include "Ganges/Enchantment/Tapestry" and "Black Man's Blues". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Billy BangLucky Man ... CD
BBE (UK), 2021. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of the most compelling albums in years from Billy Bang – and that's really saying a lot, given how much compelling music he's recorded! The set is put together in conjunction with a fascinating documentary on Bang's life, music, and time spent fighting in Vietnam – an experience that stayed with him for decades, scarred him, and which here has become a way of reaching back into the past, into the culture, as a way to find some sort of personal healing! The result is fantastic – as Bang's amazing work on violin comes in contact with a variety of Vietnamese artists – including Tran Manh Tuan on tenor, Duc Dau of the Phu Dong Family Band, and even the larger Hanoi Symphony Orchestra – all different musical partners who really help Billy expand his sound and resolve some of his decades-old conflicts – presented alongside some spoken passages from the film that are very striking, and a few solo numbers too. Titles include "Mystery Of The Mekong", "Song For Don Cherry", "New Saigon Phunk", "Jungle Lullaby", "Dan Da Traditional Lithophone", and "Moments For The Kiamia". CD

Riverside, 1950/1964. Near Mint- ... $18.99
A wonderful stripped-down set of piano work from Duke Ellington – presented here in an obscure set of duets recorded with Billy Strayhorn in 1950, finally issued as a full package by Riverside in the mid 60s – at a time when more folks seemed to be paying attention to Duke's stylings on the keys! The tracks are all relatively shortish, and accompaniment includes bass from either Lloyd Trotman, Joe Schulman, or Wendell Marshall, plus a bit of drums from Jo Jones. Strayhorn plays celeste on two numbers, and some numbers feature either artist solo. Titles include "Oscalypso", "Flamingo", "Cottontail", "Bang Up Blues", "Johnny Come Lately", "Tonk", "In A Blue Summer Garden", and "Blues For Banton". LP, Vinyl record album

Terry ReidBang, Bang You're Terry Reid ... LP
Epic, 1968. Near Mint- ... $39.99
A lost classic that needs to be in every hip rock collection! Terry Reid is one of those talents who never got his due when his albums first came out – like Tim Buckley, Nick Drake, Billy Nichols, Colin Blunstone, Curt Boettcher, and countless others that are all getting the "I'm sorry, forgive me, I'll love you forever" treatment from the rock cognoscenti. And even though Terry's style is a bit harder and more rocking than all of the above, his place in the music is similar – in that he had a really unique way of putting things together, kind of a blend of tight pop, blue-eyed soul, and some trippy influences – all wrapped up in some very tight production that makes the album sparkle like a lost pop gem. Titles include strong originals like "Erica", "Tinker Taylor", "Without Expression", "Sweater", and "When I Get Home" – plus covers of "Season Of The Witch" and "Bang Bang". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Tomeka Reid & Joe MorrisCombinations ... CD
Rogue Art (France), 2020. Used ... $12.99
Stunning combinations of sound – Tomeka Reid on cello and Joe Morris on guitar – each sounding especially wonderful here in the company of each other! It may be our ears, but there seems to be a really special sort of warmth going on here – as Morris drops a bit of his sharper tones to resonate more strongly with the cello – and Reid is maybe more open and human in sound than in some other settings – something a bit hard to explain, but which really comes through in the sound! There's a sensitivity to the performance of both players that's wonderful – especially on some of Tomeka's bowed passages – and titles include "Chicago", "Percussive Play", "Parallax Suite", "Together Yet Always Apart", "New York", "In The Mid Ground", and a nice take on the Billy Bang tune "Rainbow Gladiator". BBE (UK), Late 60s/1970s. New Copy ... $9.99 18.99
Not a set of world music-inflected jazz – although there is a bit of that – and instead, a wonderful collection of spiritual numbers from around the world – most recorded in the 70s, at a time when barriers were really breaking down in jazz music! All tracks here are nice and long, and most are groovers – but not in the typical funky jazz way – as the album is mostly earthy and organic, and mostly acoustic too – with musicians that work together wonderfully in ensemble format, and often find ways to incorporate non-traditional instruments into a jazz-based perspective! Titles include "Souffle (part 2)" by Armand Lemal, "Ismaa" by The Jazz Committee For Latin American Affairs, "Timbuktu" by Theo Loevendie Consort, "Fonetik A Velo" by Kafe, "Martinica" by Michel Sardaby, "Illustration" by Billy Bang's Survival Ensemble, "Pumu 1" by Masabumi Kikuchi, and "Itwenty Five" by Joe Malinga & The Southern African Force. One of the loosest, most open albums from Ronald Shannon Jackson & The Decoding Society – and a set that's a great antidote to some of the later records for bigger labels! Jackson's still got a very inspiring sound at this point – a polyrhythmic groove that's virtually the blueprint for the post-loft scene in New York – driven onward here by performances from key contemporaries who include Billy Bang on violin, Byard Lancaster on soprano sax and alto, Charles Brackeen on tenor and soprano, Vernon Reid and Bern Nix on guitars, Melvin Gibbs on bass, and Erasto Vasconcelos on percussion. Tracks are all tightly structured, but well up with free sounds from the musicians – and titles include "Sortie", "Nightwhistlers", "Eastern Voices/Western Dreams", "Shaman", "Dancers Of Joy", "Arising", and "Orange Birthday". ✨✧ David Wertman Sun EnsembleEarthly Delights ... LP
Sweet Earth/BBE (UK), 1978. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A classic of 70s avant spiritual jazz – issued on the tiny Sweet Earth label, which was also home to some very special records from Sun Ra and Marion Brown! Bassist David Wertman is a lot more obscure than those bigger names, but he was part of the New York loft jazz scene in those crucial mid 70s years – and had associations with Arthur Blythe, Billy Bang, Steve Reid, and other key members of the group – all heavyweights that Wertman can easily stand next to with the strength of the material on this set! The sounds here are a fantastic combination of larger ideas and more spontaneous creation – almost in an AACM mode, but a bit more spiritual overall – with David's bass at the helm of a group that includes David Swerdlove on alto and soprano sax, John Hagen on tenor and soprano, John Sprague on flutes, Greg Wall on baritone, and John Zieman on keyboards. Drummer Jay Conway really provides some great energy to keep things lively and moving – and titles include "Oh John Love Trane", "Clear Air Dancer", "Earthly Delights", and "Relations". BBE (UK), 1970s. New Copy 3LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Tremendous work from the 70s jazz underground – music that comes from a special place where freedom and rhythm walk hand in hand! Most of the artists here are ones with a legacy that includes some more outside performances – but the cuts here are all upbeat and grooving – often in a modal jazz style that's completely sublime, and which provides boundless energy for the soloists to really take off! Most numbers are from a spiritual, post-Coltrane generation – and most of the work here is not that easy to find otherwise. Tracks include "Abuella" by Billy Bang, "V Movimento" and "III Movimenhto" by Giorgio Gaslini, "Latin Black Funk" by Sparrow, "Theme/Souls" by George Russell with Jan Garbarek, "Benediction" and "Pursuit" by Tina Marsh Creative Opportunity Orchestra, and "Now Is The Time" by Dick Griffin. The Fab Trio's really been making some great musical waves in recent years – flying the flag of older improvisation high with their creative interplay, and boundless sense of imagination! That's no surprise, though, given the strength of the three players in the group – Billy Bang on violin, Joe Fonda on bass, and Barry Altschul on drums – all working together here with sounds that stem from their musical legacy back to the 70s – particularly some of the most open, expressive sounds that Bang gave us back in the day! In fact, there's almost a loft jazz feel to the whole record – a relaxed, respectful sense of creation that gives the album a very organic feel. ✨✧ Michael WhitePneuma ... LP
Impulse, 1972. Very Good+ Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Amazing work from violinist Michael White – one of a few that he cut for the Impulse label in the early 70s, all of which helped to completely redefine the use of his instrument in jazz! Throw away any sleepy connotations you may have about the violin, because in White's hands it's an instrument of soul and spirit – one used to unlock cosmic tones that glide effortlessly next to the session's earthy blend of piano, bass, and percussion! White shapes his sounds beautifully for the session – breaking the violin free of any staid European-bound traditions – and using the instrument as a key part of the new tradition of African American expression explored by Leroy Jenkins, Billy Bang, and others. Side one features the extended "Pneuma" suite – a long, exploratory track that sounds a bit like some of Leroy Jenkins work at the time – and side two tightens things up with some shorter, groovier numbers that often also feature vocals! Our favorite is the anthemic vocal number "Journey Of The Black Star" – a skipping, joyful ode that's really great – and other tunes include soulful tracks "The Blessing Song" and "Ebony Plaza", both of which have that warm post-Shepp Impulse glow to them! Elektra, 1983. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
The last true masterpiece by the greatest rock band to ever come out of the late 70s and early 80s L.A. scene. More Fun In The New World serves in a lot of ways as X's upright middle finger to the early years of the Reagan era, with the anthemic opener "The New World", and the ballad "I Must Not Think Bad Thoughts", perfectly encapsulating the fear and loathing brought about by the ridiculous politics that infected the entire decade. The album is very much a sequel to the amazing Under The Big Black Sun, full of razor pop anthems, Billy Zoom's punkabilly guitar acrobatics, and amazing depth thanks to John and Exene's sensitive and perceptive song writing. Awesome! Aum Fidelity, 2007. Used ... Out Of Stock
A beautiful live set from trumpeter Roy Campbell – a piece of music that's every bit as majestic as its title, and handled by Roy in a wonderfully spiritual way! The album's a real high point – not just in Campbell's career, but in that of the associated group members too – including violinist Billy Bang, who moves us here maybe more than on any of his own albums from the same time – plus Bryan Carrott on vibes, Hilliard Greene on bass, and Zen Matsuura on drums. Campbell's larger musical vision is wonderful – rich enough to move all the rest of the group into a very special player – and Roy also plays a bit of recorder and arghul too, which add some nice exotic currents to the sound, almost recalling an older Yusef Lateef mode. Titles include "Aten & Amarna", "Ahkenaten", "Pharaoh's Revenge (part 1)", and "Sunset On The Nile". CD

Impulse, 1972. Used ... Out Of Stock
An amazing two-fer – filled with rare spiritual sounds from Michael White! Spirit Dance is one of the killer albums that White cut for Impulse Records in the early 70 – a sweet set of spiritual jazz that took his instrument to a whole new level! Normally, the violin isn't an instrument we love in jazz, but White really transforms it here – playing it with a stretched-out, spiritual sound that's almost like a saxophone – really hitting a fresh sound that's mighty nice. Other instrumentation includes a nicely organic blend of piano from Ed Kelly, bass from Ray Drummond, and percussion and flutes from Baba Omson – often building in the way you'd get with a Pharoah Sanders album, but with a gentler, more personal sound. There's a bit of vocals at points from Makeda & Wanika King – and tracks include "The Tenth Pyramid", "Spirit Dance", "John Coltrane Was Here", and "Unlocking The Twelfth House". Pneuma is amazing work from violinist Michael White – one of a few that he cut for the Impulse label in the early 70s, all of which helped to completely redefine the use of his instrument in jazz! A deep dive into the catalog of the legendary Soul Note label – the Italian imprint that became a huge host to American jazz musicians in the late 70s onwards – a company that helped to evolve both spiritual and loft jazz modes, and continue the legacy of free-thinking expression that was begun in the shadow of John Coltrane! The choice of cuts here is great – tracks that go past some of the obvious classics of the label, but which also resonate with those moments too – a well-chosen array of tracks that often focus on more rhythmic moments of the label, with strong spiritual and modal currents throughout. Black Saint/BBE (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 3LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A tremendous look at one of the coolest jazz labels of all time – and one that has an especially strong focus on the more spiritual side of its music! The paired Black Saint and Soul Note labels came along from the Italian scene right at a time when so many other American companies were shutting their doors – former spiritual jazz powerhouses like Strata East, Impulse, and Black Jazz were moving beyond the music, or disappearing entirely – which made the role of Black Saint/Soul Note such a crucial one! The company came into the game at a time of boundless creativity in American jazz – and really captured a post-Coltrane generation that was brimming over with fire and new ideas, but just needed a place to find expression – which it did at the label, who recorded dozens of albums in the space of less than a decade, nearly all of which have gone onto become classics over the years. And while there's a side of the label that's much more free jazz and avant garde, the cuts here reflect a Black Saint/Soul Note that's just slightly inside – tunes that are still freewheeling, but also have a rhythmic core – and the kinds of open, soaring solos that were first inspired in the 60s generation of Coltrane and Shepp. The choice of cuts is great – similar to the others in the If Music series – and titles include "Mr Seven" by M'Booom, "Joycie Girl" by Don Pullen with Sam Rivers, "Il Giro Del Giorno In 80 Mondi" by Enrico Rava, "Oasis" by Hamiet Bluiett, "Confessin" by John Stubblefield, "Joobubie" by George Adams & Dannie Richmond, "Verde Que Eu Te Quero Ver" by Rava String Band, "Down Home In New York" by Archie Shepp, "BK" by Air, and "The Nagual Julian" by Billy Bang Sextet. A totally wonderful batch of cuts from the early years of Liberty Records, and related labels – cuts that really bristle with the kind of energy that was exploding in all sorts of styles on the LA scene at the end of the 50s! The band is tight, the sound is right, and Frank steps out nicely on songs that he sung years before in other settings – but quite possibly never so well or as perfectly timed as on this LP! Titles include "Baubles Bangles & Beads", "The Song Is You", "Something's Gotta Give", and "Dancing In The Dark" – as well as the sublime album bookends "Come Dance With Me" and "The Last Dance". CD also features 4 bonus tracks – including duets with Keely Smith on "Nothing In Common" and "How Are Ya Fixed For Love". CD

✨✧ DeodatoPrelude/Deodato 2 (SACD multi-channel disc) ... CD
CTI/Vocalion (UK), 1972/1973. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A pair of classics from Deodato – back to back on a single high-quality CD! First up is Prelude – a legendary album from the 70s funk scene – and one of the crowning achievements of keyboard maestro Eumir Deodato! Deodato got his start during the bossa years of the 60s – where his sophisticated charts were already enough to make his career a landmark – but in the following decade he picked up the Fender Rhodes, and really took off in a great new direction with classic records like this! The set's a wonderful blend of larger charts and jazzy soloing – with sublime Rhodes lines from the leader, plus a mix of acoustic and electric instrumentation in the best CTI mode – underscored by percussion from both Ray Barretto and Airto. The features Deodato's remake of "Also Sprach Zarathustra" into the funky "2001" – soaring with Fender Rhodes lines that set a new standard for the instrument, with a funky undercurrent that few would have expected for the tune. Other tracks are nice too – and include a great bossa-y version of "Baubles Bangles & Beads", plus "Spirit Of Summer", "September 13", and "Carly & Carole". Deodato 2 is filled with funky keyboards galore – and one of the greatest records ever from this legendary Brazilian jazz talent! The album follows nicely off Deodato's Prelude classic for CTI – and like that one, this set's built on long-flowing tunes that rise and fall with a wonderful sense of rhythm – a sublime electric piano groove that's quite different than anything Deodato recorded before – and possibly never realized this perfectly again after his CTI years. Other players include Stanley Clarke on bass, Billy Cobham on drums, and Hubert Laws on flute – and titles include the massive Latin funk track "Super Strut", plus the tunes "Pavane For A Dead Princess", "Skyscrapers", and a great version of "Nights In White Satin". Plus, this CD reissue features 3 bonus tracks – "Venus", "Do It Again", and "Latin Flute"! CD
(Hybrid Super Audio CD pressing – works on standard CD players!)
