A killer classic from Jimmy Bo Horne – one of the sharpest male singers to work for the TK family of labels in the late 70s – and one who could really summarize all the greatness of Miami soul with a record like this! The album's got all the funky fullness of some of the larger TK groups of the time, but also has a key focus in Jimmy's vocals – not the deepest of deep soul, but strong enough to really provide just the right edge to the tunes – often with production that spaces out the sides of his vocals in kind of a KC sort of style! One of the most comprehensive collections of work we've ever seen on Eddie Bo – a really well-done set that finally gets at the full range of his massive funky talents – including a host of rare singles done for a variety of other artists as well! Despite the dates in the title, most of the music here is from the 60s and 70s – music from those glorious years of New Orleans soul and funk – when it seemed like the Crescent City groove could never stop, thanks to the efforts of Eddie and some of his contemporaries! Forget the silly cowboy costume on the front cover – because this is a heck of a great album! Bo might have gotten saddled (no pun intended!) with a silly gimmick for the title and image of the set – but the album's one of his best from the early Chess years, and features a rip-roaring batch of tracks that really cut it up in his classic scratchy guitar mode of the time! Incredible work by Willie Bobo – a slamming record of hard funky instrumentals, one that sounds different than any of his other albums! The record's a killer all the way through – a mixture of Latin and deep 70s funk, one of the few perfect fusions of the styles, held up beautifully all the way through the set. We've always liked Willie a lot, but honestly, we don't know how he managed to make a record this funky – but we're also not arguing, just enjoying the grooves with tremendous delight and surprise. Kenny Drew's the star of the set on piano – playing solo here on a session from 1978, with a young bassist Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen in 1966, and an early 80s set of duets with bassist Bo Steif on the remainder of the tracks! The album does a nice job of blocking things out – so that the earliest tracks begin the record – but with the kind of open, sensitive modes we're normally used to hearing from the Storyville label in their later years – clearly marking these guys as pioneers in giving a player like Drew the kind of space to express himself in ways that didn't always happen back home in the US. Jackie McLean opens it up at Cafe Montmartre in Copenhagen – blowing in the long, open-ended style usually associated with live dates from the club! The format here is similar to the better-known Montmartre recordings by Dexter Gordon and Johnny Griffin – strong rhythms from a trio that features Kenny Drew on piano, Bo Stief on bass, and Alex Riel on drums – topped with dominant solos from Jackie, who's blowing here in a boppish style that's a bit different from some of his more spiritual sessions of the 70s. A perfect example of the jamming style of Quicksilver Messenger Service at their best – as side one features a 25 minute extrapolation of Bo Diddley's "Who Do You Love", stretched out by the group into these wicked long guitar lines and pulsating rhythms that shift nicely over time! Bo's a surprising inspiration for a group that's better known for their psych output – but their use of that track, and his "Mona", on the live recordings here really helps carve a link out of two different generations of guitar innovation – and suddenly helps us understand links between them both. The set continues with some great original numbers – the very long "Calvary", plus "Maiden Of The Cancer Moon" – as well as a cover of "Happy Trails". CD

A rough-edged batch of spiritual jazz tracks from trumpeter Charles "Cha Cha" Shaw (not to be confused with Charles "Bo Bo" Shaw) – recorded in an open-ended loft jazz mode with a really open, echoey feel! The album's a rare 70s jazz date on the Folkways label, and it's almost got the freer, open sound of an ESP session from a decade before – experimental jazz that's very much at the fringes, but also played with some of the spirituality of the post-Coltrane generation. Shaw's trumpet has a really earthy sort of feel – blown with a great sense of personality, and a sound that's almost heart-wrenching at times – especially on some of the more modal numbers. Other players include Brian Ross on tenor, Billy Lyes on piano and guitar, and Ronnie Boykins on bass. Boykins is really the only player we know here from other records – and titles include the nicely grooving "KZ", plus "Juggety", "Super Slik", and "Eternal". CD

A nice late 70s album you might have passed over because of the terrible cover art. "Party Freaks, Come On" was Ron Louis Smith's big dancefloor hit from the late 70's, and it's got a nice uptempo Miami funk groove to it – sort of like the stuff by Jimmy Bo Horne, or other artists from the era. The rest of the set's mostly similar uptempo funk, but there's a couple of nice, crisply produced modern soul numbers in the vein of the Natural High compilations, like "Come On And Do It" and "Love Talk". Also includes "The Worm", "Make Me Know It", "We Like To Party" and "You're My Everything". CD

A really fantastic album from tenorist Harold Land – a very rare Japanese set that may well blow away even his best albums of the 70s! The record features pianist Makoto Tarashita in the lead – a strongly spiritual player with a nicely modal sensibility – spun out over long tracks that have wonderful energy, and which seem to set Land loose on these solos that are full of life and imagination, and a sense of soul that he doesn't always bring to the studio! The rest of the group features Yasushi Yoneki on bass, Mike Reznikoff on drums, and Takayuki Koizumi on percussion – and the percussion really adds a lot to the songs, picking up the rhythmic core, while also giving them a nicely organic vibe too. Titles include "Dragon Dance", "Takeuma", "Crossing", "World Peace", "Dear Friends", and "I Ha To Bo". CD

A really fantastic chapter in the career of the great Muddy Waters – a set that was initially dismissed as "inauthentic", but which has gone on to much-deserved fame over the years! Part of the genius here is the great Charles Stepney – that hip Chicago arranger who did so many wonderful things in the Chess/Cadet Records studios at the end of the 60s – which he definitely does here, as the gritty blues of Muddy Waters is mixed with a righteous current of 70s funky – with added guitar from Phil Upchurch and Pete Cosey, bass from Louis Satterfield, and organ from Stepney himself! A wonderfully lyrical session from trumpeter Donald Byrd – yet for some reason, the album's one of his most overlooked from the 60s! The session features material by 2 different groups – one that includes Byrd, Hank Mobley, and Duke Pearson; and another which features Byrd, alongside Jackie McLean and Pearson. Donald's playing is really opening up here – hitting some sweeter, more drifting notes, yet still referencing the heavier style of his hardbop years from time to time – and in a way, the record's almost a hint of the solo style that Byrd would take up on 70s recordings with Larry Mizell – still in a deep groove, but with a newfound ability to sail over the top with some nice light notes. Mobley and McLean are superb, as always, and Pearson plays nice and hard – with more of an edge than on his own recordings of the time. Tracks include "Ghana", "Lex", "My Girl Shirl", and "Bo". A rare slice of work from trumpeter Don Cherry – music that's every bit as forward-thinking as his three classic 60s albums on Blue Note! The session is a live one, but the sound is quite strong – recorded up-close, and with great focus on Cherry's incredible horn work – as well as the efforts of the rest of the group, which includes Gato Barbieri on tenor, Karl Berger on vibes, Bo Stief on bass, and Aldo Romano on drums. There's a definite "new thing" vibe going on here – a style that's similar to some of Archie Shepp's work of the period, or that of some of Cherry's Blue Note contemporaries. An essential bit of funkiness from this obscure New Orleans funk combo! The Gaturs' frontman was keyboardist Willie Tee – who went on to greater fame as a jazz and session player – but we like him best at this early point, when he was wailing away on organ in a tight choppy small group setting. The Gaturs clearly deserve any praise you could heap on them – and their work on this album's a perfect match with the New Orleans funk of Eddie Bo and The Meters. Most of the material was recorded in New Orleans, but only ever issued on 7" singles – and this is the first LP that the group have ever had under their name. Classic work from Slim Harpo – an album that kicks off with one of his biggest hits ever, and follows with plenty of great tunes as well! Things here are pretty rootsy and stripped-down – lots of spare, slowish rhythms (but a few funkier ones too!) – and instrumentation that's dominated by guitar and harmonica alongside Slim's vocals – all in a mode that's maybe a bit more vintage than his funky soul of the late 60s, but still equally powerful too! There's some great echoey production at points – almost taking a Bo Diddley tip, which makes for some really great sounds – and titles include "Snoopin Around", "Buzz Me Baby", "I'm A King Bee", "Moody Blues", "My Home Is A Prison", "Dream Girl", "Blues Hangover", and "Rainin In My Heart". Great later work from tenorist Warne Marsh – recorded in Copenhagen with some very warm backing from the Kenny Drew Trio! The album's a great reminder that even in familiar territory, Marsh can still always blow us away – because although the set's mostly standards, they're often colored with those dark edges and blue corners that show up in Warne's playing, especially in his later years. Drew's work on the piano is a treat, as always – and his trio features Bo Stief on bass and Aage Tanggaard on drums.
