Augustus PabloBorn To Dub You ... LP
17 North Parade, Mid 70s. New Copy ... $24.99 25.98
There's few folks more born to dub you than the great Augustus Pablo – an artist whose laidback work helped introduce dub music to a whole new generation in the 70s, then continued to remain at the top of the stack as the years went on! And although these cuts are rare material, not Pablo's classics, that only testifies even more strongly to the way that his 70s work can still blow away most of the competition – including any of the cats from the younger generation. The tracks here are all from the vaults of Gussie Clarke – and titles include "Classical Illusion (dub vendor 12")", "Origan Style", "Stardum", "No Entry (12" version)", "Born To Dub You", "Believe A Dub", and a nice two takes on the classic "Skylarking". Abraham/Get On Down, Late 70s. New Copy ... $6.99 14.98
Uber-classic dub from Augustus Pablo! Dubbing In A Africa was produced by Pablo and features a rhythm section of Bingy Bunny, Sly & Robbie and Gladdy. Here they deliver a nice, tight set of tunes which like many of Pablo's other classics, veer closer to rhythm workouts than deep space dub excursions – and we ain't complaining about that! Tremendous stuff from one the greats! Titles include "King Of Kings Dub", "Herbal Weed Dub", "Dub In Ethiopia", "Dubbing In A Africa", "Nigerian Love Dub", and "Mount Of Olives Dub". CD

Rockers/Onlyroots (UK), Mid 1970s. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Some of the deepest, trippiest sounds from the Jamaican scene in the 70s – a classic collection of dubbed-up cuts from Augustus Pablo – who throws in loads of sweet melodica lines to the rhythms, at least in between hits of the pipe he's smoking on the cover! Pablo took the laidback side of dub to a whole new level with a record like this – finding a way to let the rhythms bump out and swirl around themselves in space, then improvise his own keyboard lines with the airy tone of the melodica – itself already a haunting instrument, but taken to very original territory in the hands of Augustus. Titles include "Rockers Dub", "Up Warrika Hill", "Cassava Piece", "Tubby's Dub Song", "Jah Dread", "Brace A Boy", "Thunder Clap", "Park Lane Special", "New Style" and "A P Special". It's a good thing the Rockers All-Stars met King Tubby in a firehouse – as the record's so burning, somebody almost had to put out the fire! The album's a classic from that moment when Agustus Pablo was crafting some of his best lines on melodica, and helping out with the arrangements too – with instrumentation from a group that includes Earl Chinna Smith on guitar, Robbie Shakespeare on bass, and the great Deadly Headly on horns – all given some cool combinations of keys from Pablo, who also handles organ, piano, and the cool "strings assemble" too! Mixed by Prince Jammy and King Tubby – with titles that include "Zion Is A Home", "Jah Say Dub", "Dub In Matthews Lane Arena", and "Simeon Tradition". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Augustus PabloEl Rockers ... CD
Pressure Sounds (UK), 1973. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Essential! One wonders why when the original King Tubby Meets Rockers Uptown album is so heavy, that you'd want another dub version, but one spin of this special reissue package and you'll be convinced. Altogether different dubs and versions of many of the same rhythm cuts as that watershed dub LP only prove that the whole concept of "versioning", and cutting multiple dubs of the same rhythms (usually to service selectors and sound systems who needed unique tracks) was pure genius on the part of Jamaican producers. Add that to the sheer weight of the rhythms used here, and you've got a formula for a potent set! Once again, the producers at Pressure Sounds have dug up some beautiful gems, finding unique versions of H. Swaby's melodica dancing over thundering Rockers' rhythms and taking a dip now and again in a bucket of reverb & echoplex. Insightful liner notes and a beautiful sleeve complete this package of 17 massive instrumental tracks, including "Black Gunn", "New Style", "El Rockers", "Skanking Easy", "Tribalist" and "Cassava Piece". Essential dub material from the legendary King Tubby – a set that's one of the best of the genre during the classic years – and which stands as a true testament to how great the format can be when handled right! The watchword here is simplicity – as the key elements are almost isolated in little sonic chambers, then set to resonate alongside each other – pulled from rhythms from tracks initially done as vocal productions, but reworked through the mixing talents of Erroll "ET" Thompson and Tubby. Players include Bobby Ellis on trumpet, Richard "Dirty Harry" Hall on tenor, and Augustus Pablo on organ and piano, plus a bit of clarinet. There's few folks who could make a melodica sound so sinister – yet that's always been the crazy genius of Augustus Pablo – the way he takes such a simple instrument and makes it sound so wild on vintage albums like this! The set was arranged and produced by Enos McLeod, one of Pablo's more obscure musical partners in the decade – and it's got a lean style that's nice and raw, and which definitely has plenty of echo in the production, but maybe even more of a straightforward vibe than some of the other albums cut by Augustus during the decade! The whole thing's great – a sometimes-overlooked jewel in his mighty crown – with titles that include "Fat Girl Jean", "Marcus Garvey", "Skibo Road", "Striker", "Last Of The Jestering", "Pablo Style", "Thriller", and "Pablo Nuh Jester". Backings on most tracks are by the Rockers All Stars, who take the lead on a few tunes – and the lean production has a great sound – dubby elements that are nicely compressed, and maybe even more so by the quality of the tapes – not in a bad way, just as if you're hearing Pablo spin some rare plates of his own, in the backroom of his studio during his free time. A once lost gem! Hudson's voice as a producer remains one of the most unique and idiosyncratic of his era, and this first LP issued under his own name stands as a shining document of his genius. Cut very near the time of his classic dub side Pick A Dub, this album shares the haunting mood that runs through the best of Hudson's work, all the while delivering a resounding roots message. The rhythms are fierce, laid down by Leroy Sibbles, Fully Fullwood, Santa Davis, Count Ossie and Augustus Pablo, a dozen mighty tracks in all: "Hunting", "Flesh Of My Skin", "Blood Of My Blood", "Testing Of My Faith", "Fight Your Revolution", "Darkest Night", "Talk Some Sense (Gamma Ray)", "Treasures Of The World", "My Nocturne", "I Shall Be Released", "No Friend Of Mine" and "Stabiliser". ✨✧ Lee PerryBlack Ark Singles Selector One ... CD
Ascension (Australia), Late 70s. Used ... Out Of Stock
It's not hard to find Lee Perry compilations out there, but it is hard to find legit ones that actually compile the cream, given his enormous body of work. This nice compilation collects some great sides from the latter half of his Black Ark period, many cuts having only seen the light of day previously as 45s. While the follow up CD to this set is loaded with chunky Upsetter's instrumentals, this one has got tons of great vocal numbers, like Devon Irons' "When Jah Come", Max Romeo's "One Step Forward", Junior Byles' "The Long Way", Lee & Junior's "Dreader Locks" & the Black Notes' "African Style" plus a couple of dubbed out instrumentals like the Upsetters' "Enter the Dragon". 22 cuts in all: Lee Perry "White Belly Rat" & "Bathroom Skank", Junior Byles "Fever", The Mystic "Forward With Jah Orthodox", Bunny & Ricky "Freedom Fighter", Augustus Pablo "Hot & Cold Version 1", Peter & Paul Lewis "Ethiopian Land", Danny Hensworth "Mr Money Man", Junior Ainsworth "Thanks & Praise", Dillinger "Middle East Rock", Junior Delgado "Sons Of Slaves", the Heptones "Mistry Babylon", Sons Of Light "Land Of Love", the Silvertones "Rejoice Jah Jah Children", Augustus Pablo "Vibrate On" and Brent Dowe "Down Here In Babylon". ✨✧ Yabby YouJesus Dread 1972 to 1977 ... CD
Blood & Fire (UK), 1970s. Used 2CD ... Out Of Stock
Excellent 2 CD set compiling the work of roots rock prophet Vivian Jackson, aka Yabby You. While the tracks all keep the minor key dark mood that much of the heavier roots cuts tend to have, there's still an uplifting quality to the set, and many memorable performances, not just by Yabby You, but also sax great Tommy McCook, DJ Tappa Zukie, Augustus Pablo and immense dubs courtesy of King Tubby. There's over 40 tracks here, including quite a lot of versioning, spread out over 2 CDs, with a fat booklet jammed with notes. Includes "Run Come Rally", "Yabby Youth", "Pablo Dread in a Red", "Tubby's Vengeance", "Warn the Nation", "Chant Jah Victory", "Deliver Me from My Enemies", "King Pharoah's Plague" and "King Tubby Special". ✨✧ Nat BirchallSounds Almighty ... LP
Tradition Disc (UK), 2018. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A very different album than usual from the great tenorist Nat Birchall – a set that's no less soulful than his other records, but in a completely different way! The album's a collaboration with producer Al Breadwinner – and has this approach that feels like a lost Jamaican instrumental session from the start of the 70s – as if Nat's playing the role of saxophonist Tommy McCook over some nicely laidback Kingston-styled rhythms! Birchall solos on tenor on most tracks, but also blows a bit of melodica too – and even handles a bit of organ and percussion too – all swept up in a dubby mix handled by Breadwinner, who contributes drums, guitars, and keyboards. There's a bit of trumpet and trombone on the set too, plus baritone sax from Stally – and the quality of the record is excellent, every bit up to the range of the Jamaican legends listed as inspiration on the cover – a lineup that includes McCook, Lee Perry, Augustus Pablo, and Cedric Brooks. Titles include "In The Hills", "Ancient Wisdom", "Youth Iron Rock", "Freedom Style", "Amlak Dub", "Hail Don D Jr", and "Igziabeher". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Blacka TGood Musicians ... LP
Rockers International/Onlyroots (France), 1988. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A digital set from the second half of the 80s, but one that keeps a very righteous, rootsy vibe at times – thanks to production from Augustus Pablo, and plenty of spiritual guidance from co-producer Haile Selassie! Pablo adds in plenty of melodica and keyboard lines next to the tightly snapping vocals of Blacka T – a vocalist whose whole lyrical approach is right in the groove, and moving at a speed that's headed towards some of the bigger dancehall work to come in the next few years – but which here really retains a nicely down to earth vibe! Titles include "Free The People Of South Africa", "She A Me Lover", "Ethiopia Calling", "Long Time Love", "Big Bad Celebrity", and "Vegetable". LP, Vinyl record album
