The title of this set sounds a bit stark – and that's maybe a good reference to the overall sound – which is spacious, yet powerful – often with a brooding quality that really brings out a strong resonance between all three musicians! The piano of Matthew Shipp is in wonderful form here – maybe the most individual voice of the session – as the tenor and soprano sax of John Butcher are often matched with the electronics of Thomas Lehn – in ways that sometimes makes it difficult to tell what sounds are coming from the reeds and what are coming from the electronics – yet we mean that in the best way possible, as it really reflects the inventiveness of both musicians! Shipp's presence is maybe a more organic balance to the others – in a way that really works well – as the trio moves through a mixture of short and long improvisations, with titles that include "Trippy Revelation", "Off Kilter", "Links On Canvas", "Tastes Of Song", "Stitched Equivalence", and "Blurred & Sewn".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We only use the grade "Used CD" for non-new CDs. This all-encompassing grade was chosen it because we only buy and offer used CDs in the best possible condition.

When you purchase a used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use, but if there are significant details or defects we will describe the item's condition (just like we do with LPs), so look for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details before ordering.

All of our used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. After you receive a used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly. If it does not, you can request a return for a full refund.

Road Song
A&M (Japan), 1968. Used
Beautifully lofty work from the great Wes Montgomery – a set that was recorded quite late in his too-short career, and really points the way towards some of the sophisticated sounds that might have followed, had Wes not left this planet all too soon! Don Sebesky is at the head of the charts ... CD

A really hard-burning live session – recorded in the 90s, but with all the bite and fire of some of the best Hamiet Bluiett sessions from the previous decade! There's a long-spun, spiritual vibe going on here – tracks that use familiar instrumentation, but really find a way to soar ... CD

Horace Silver

Silver 'N Voices
Blue Note (Japan), 1976. Used
A beautiful, beautiful record from Horace Silver – one of his great 70s experiments for Blue Note – and a set that has him working in the same "jazz with voices" mode explored by Max Roach and Donald Byrd in earlier years! The core of the set is focused around the great work ... CD

Duke Ellington

Afro-Bossa
Reprise (Japan), Early 1960s. Used
A darkly beautiful album from Duke Ellington – one that really lives up to the promise of its title! The mode here is almost more "afro" than "bossa" – as Ellington's working in the fuller, richer styles used in some of his more exotic 60s suites – and less in ... CD
