So Nice (Pickwick pressing)

LP (Item 9845) Pickwick, Mid 60s — Condition: Used
Temporarily Out Of Stock

LP

Sort of a repackaging of the Brasil '65 album on Capitol – done here in a pressing by Pickwick that features a very psychedelic cover! The record's a mixed bag of tracks that has some bossa piano trio stuff, plus some vocal cuts with Wanda De Sah, the alto and flute of Bud Shank, and the occasional guitar playing of Rosinha De Valenca. The album was recorded in LA by Capitol, and has a bright West Coast 60's feel that brings out the best of Sergio's style. Cuts include "Reza", "One Note Samba", "Berimbau", "So Nice", and "Consolacao".  © 1996-2016, Dusty Groove, Inc.

We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Equinox
A&M, 1968. Very Good-
The second album by Sergio and crew – and a real push forward for the group! The basic format of two-female harmony leads is still in place – but for some reason, this album gives a bit more of a nod to Brazilian roots than before, and really spices things up with an even more ... Trem Caipira
EMI (Brazil), 1985. Near Mint-
Wonderfully evocative work from Egberto Gismonti – a set based around the music of Hecto Villa-Lobos, but taken to much more creatively modern territory! The older compositions are a wonderful match for Gismonti's free-thinking approach to music – and the tunes are really opened up ... LP, Vinyl record album

Flame
Milestone, 1984. Near Mint-
Warmly mellow grooves from Azymuth – a set that nicely lives up to the "Flame" in the title – and which shows the strengths the trio picked up during their years in the US! The sound here is round and soulful – a great fusion of the group's roots in the 70s Brazilian ... LP, Vinyl record album

Picante/Concord, 1981. Very Good+
Great stuff! Tania Maria's first few years recording in the US were some of her best – and this excellent groover on Picante features some very tight Brazilian jazz tracks, cut with a small combo of west coasters, and produced by Cal Tjader with a smooth jazzy vibe. A great little record, and one that might be thought of best as a "Herbie Mann Plus" record – rather than a duet between the artists on the cover! A sweet little pairing of the keyboards of Sergio Mendes and the early arranging styles of Dave Grusin – and a set that's quite different than some of Sergio's vocal albums with Brasil 66! Sadness on guitar – a perfect title for Baden Powell's work on his chosen instrument, especially the way he could bring a simple but emotive style to his music! One of the funkiest albums Sergio Mendes ever recorded – a monster of a record that's filled with enough dancefloor groovers to have had a big impact on the soul market in the US! One of the greatest Luiz Bonfa albums we've ever heard! The record was recorded in Paris in 1962 – and it's got a clean lively bossa sound that reminds us a lot more of the catchy early work by Joao Gilberto and Baden Powell than Bonfa's sometimes flowery sessions from the same time. A masterpiece of harmony soul – one of THE all-time greats of the genre, and a lasting treasure from The Stylistics!
