New Orleans Soul Variety Vol 4

LP (Item 978904) Victor (Japan), Late 60s — Condition: Near Mint-

A great Japanese-only collection – lots of rare New Orleans soul from the writing/production talents of Allen Toussaint! Includes work by Mill Evans, Ray Alegre, Zilla Mays, Wallace Johnson, Gus Lewis, Sonny Fischer, and Tommy Ridgley!  © 1996-2021, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Includes obi.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Victor (Japan), Late 70s. Very Good
The cover is cheesy – and maybe a bit offensive – but this Japanese-only 70s collection features some surprisingly groovy work! Titles include "Bobo Step" by Ice, "Sexy Bus Stop" by The Oriental Express, "Chorus Line" by TT Sotto, "The Bamboo" ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ebony Rhythm Funk Campaign

Watchin' You, Watchin' Me
Chi Sound/United Artists, 1976. Sealed
A perfect example of the old adage that the funkier the band's name is, the less funky their music will be! Not that the group's really that bad or anything – they're just not the all-out party jam you'd expect from an ensemble with "ebony" and "funk" in their name. The ... LP, Vinyl record album

Marvelettes

Marvelettes
Tamla, 1967. Very Good
Classic stuff from the girls who emerged to become one of Motown's best groups of the late 60s years. The set features the group's great version of "The Hunter Gets Captured By The Game", still a big cut on the Chi-town steppers scene – plus a number of other covers and lesser ... Brunswick, Mid 60s. Very Good
An obscure session for Big Maybelle, but a great one too – a record that has her moving past the melancholy blues of her earlier work, into a lively gospel-based mode that's surprisingly great for her voice! The sound is quite upbeat and joyous – in a style that really has Maybelle's ... LP, Vinyl record album

Graham Central Station

Mirror
Warner, 1976. Near Mint-
Larry Graham and crew are definitely going for a fuller sound on this set – starting off the record with a funky marching band, in Tusk-like fashion – then rolling into some bass-heavy funk that tops even their previous records for tightness! The groove is a key element in the growth ... LP, Vinyl record album

Diana Ross

Swept Away
RCA, 1984. Near Mint- Gatefold
A surprising hit for Diana Ross – a record that really helped the singer shine brightly in the 80s, but with a vibe that's quite different than her years at Motown! The album's got plenty of star power on board – production work from Arthur Baker, Richard Perry, Daryl Hall, Lionel ... LP, Vinyl record album

It's the late 80s, and Barry White has left behind his string-laden arrangements of the 70s – but the Man himself is still totally great, and finds a way to bring a strong sense of depth to the world of beats, basslines, and keyboards! Instrumentally, the set's pure 80s all the way through ... LP, Vinyl record album

Oscar Brown Jr

Brother Where Are You
Atlantic, 1973. Near Mint-
Sweet 70s funk from the great Oscar Brown – quite a change from his jazz-based work of the 60s, but a great new sitting for all of his wonderful wit and warmth! Brown's still a hell of a songwriter, and one with a very socially-conscious eye – sharper here than before, with lots of ... LP, Vinyl record album
Capitol, Late 60s. Near Mint- Gatefold
A great collection of all things hip on Capitol at the end of the 60s – some of the label's headiest rockers, plus a few more bits from left field! The album has a great trippy cover of a long-armed dude playing piano in a very Peter Max sort of pose – and titles include "Broke ... LP, Vinyl record album
