Car Wash – Original Soundtrack

LP (Item 9729) MCA, 1976 — Condition: Sealed
2LP Gatefold
Also available
Rose Royce/Norman Whitfield — Car Wash – Original Soundtrack ... CD 13.99

A solid bit of heavy funk – and one of the last strong-selling soundtracks of the blacksploitation era! Sure, you know the hit "Car Wash", but there's plenty of other great numbers that rank the 2LP set right up there with the best of its genre. There's a lot of nice instrumentals on the album that feature a tight smooth funky sound – with good work on clavinet, wah wah guitar, and horns – all quite different than the usual work of Whitfield and Rose Royce at the time. The group do a good job on the vocal cuts, working in that soulful early 70s Motown mode that Whitfield was working on with other acts – and the whole album's as great a debut for Rose Royce as anyone could have hoped for. Features the hit title cut, plus "I Wanna Get Next To You", "Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is", "Zig Zag", "Mid Day DJ Theme", "I'm Going Down", "Crying", "Doing What Comes Naturally", and "Righteous Rhythm". The Pointer Sisters sing on one track, "You Gotta Believe".  © 1996-2022, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(US pressing, still sealed with a cut corner. Shrinkwrap has some wear and aging.)

Sealed

This is what it says, that the record is still held fast in shrink-wrap. We tend to be pretty suspicious about these things, so if the shrink-wrap doesn't look original, or if the record seems to have undergone some damage over time, we'll probably take it out of the wrapper to ensure that it's in good shape — which is why we don't have more of these. In some cases the shrink-wrap may be torn in spots, but if it's not possible the record has been taken out and played, the record will still qualify as "Sealed".

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Alicia Myers

I Appreciate
MCA, 1984. Very Good+
A stone classic from Alicia Myers – one of her classic sets recorded during the MCA years of the mighty One Way empire! By this point in the 80s, Myers was just about the only part of Al Hudson's One Way collective that was still running strong – and this album of smooth modern soul ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ready For The World

Ready For The World
MCA, 1985. Very Good+
Classic post-Prince commercial 80s soul! Even though Prince, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis and even Andre Cymone are nowhere in sight, this classic 80s LP could just as well have come out of Minneapolis as Flint, Michigan, and we mean that in the best possible way. "Oh Sheila" has ... LP, Vinyl record album

Rockie Robbins

Rockie Robbins (1985)
MCA, 1985. Sealed
Rocky's definitely hitting the 80s groove a lot harder here than on some of his earlier albums, but the record still features work by Richard Evans – whose arrangements and production made some of Rocky's earlier records so nice! Evans handles about half the record, and the other half's in ... LP, Vinyl record album

New Edition

Under The Blue Moon
MCA, 1986. Sealed
New Edition show they're no Johnnies-come-lately on the harmony soul scene – and pay tribute to a host of older groups from the 50s and 70s – singing a mix of hits and soul classics in a laidback late nite mode that brings a real focus on their vocals. Given their age, there's a sound ... LP, Vinyl record album

Denise LaSalle

MCA, 1979. Near Mint-

Bobby Brown

King Of Stage
MCA, 1986. Sealed
Bobby Brown's out to put his New Edition past firmly behind him here – stepping out in a range of pop soul numbers that still have a sound that's as fresh as his late teen look on the cover! The Brown cliches haven't settled into full effect here yet – and there's a boyish charm on ... LP, Vinyl record album

Dramatics

10 1/2
MCA, 1980. Sealed
The Dramatics hit an 80s groove mood here – and as on their clubbier sides from the end of the 70s, the vocals are still wonderful – and more than anything, the set's a strong soul-based set that still has the group at the top of their game! Ballads actually sparkle the best here ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jeffree

Jeffree
MCA, 1979. Sealed
This nice soulful sleeper was not that recognized in the 70s, but in the 90s, it's become a huge favorite in the Chicago's steppers scene, thanks to the excellent two-step groover "Love's Gonna Last". It's a great cut, with sweet soulful vocals, and a totally catchy midtempo groove ... LP, Vinyl record album

Klique

Love Cycles
MCA, 1985. Very Good+
The group's third release – and although they've dropped the space suits, they're still grooving nicely in a slightly electric mode! The sound here is heavy on keyboards and bassy bits – a very catchy 80s groove that's topped by shifting male/female vocals from the members of the trio! ... LP, Vinyl record album

Gwen Guthrie

Portrait
Island, 1983. Near Mint-
Early work from Gwen Guthrie – produced by Sly & Robbie, but with a sweet modern soul sound that's got a lot less of their influence than you'd guess! The sound is much more New York than Jamaica – and that's probably due to some great instrumental backing on keyboards by the likes ... LP, Vinyl record album

Foxy

Get Off
Dash, 1978. Near Mint-
A pretty catchy bit of Miami club from the late 70s! The group's got a strong acoustic sound underpinning their grooves – with some excellent percussion underneath the best tracks, and some vocals that almost hit a scatting harmony range that reminds us of Side Effect or the LA Boppers. ...
