Strike It Rich

LP (Item 971760) Verve (UK), 1950s — Condition: Near Mint-
2LP Gatefold
70s UK compilation of 50s recordings, featuring Harry Edison, Sonny Criss, Benny Carter, Flip Phillips, Bob Lawson, Barney Kessel, and Peter Ind.  © 1996-2025, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(70s Select Double issue. Cover has some ring and edge wear, small blemish spots, and is bent a bit at the sides.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Condition Notes

If something is relevant, we try to describe it in the notes — especially if it is release or pressing details, or an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Buddy Rich

Richcraft (Trip)
Mercury/Trip, 1959. Near Mint-
Tighter than usual for Buddy Rich at Verve – but still a great little set, thanks to some soulfully swinging arrangements from Ernie Wilkins – who was really at the top of his game at this point in his career! The lineup is filled with great players – including Phil Woods, Harry ... LP, Vinyl record album
Mercury, Late 50s. Very Good+
A really weird one from Buddy – a unique session that has him singing instead of drumming! And although Buddy had a reputation for being a pretty fierce person in real life, on record his voice is surprisingly gentle and mellow – not the bruisy, belting Buddy Greco-esque style you'd ... Pacific Jazz, 1966. Very Good+ Gatefold
A hard and heavy side from Buddy, and true to his reputation and the title of the LP, he comes out swinging! The set features a top notch mid 60s group, and from the sound of the numbers on this set, ol' Buddy did need to hand out any of his famous lectures on the bus afterwards, with some crisp ... Pacific Jazz, 1970. Very Good
Buddy certainly knew how to keep the customer satisfied – as you'll hear on this hip set of big band grooves, recorded by Buddy for Liberty Records in 1970. The set's got Buddy working with a tight group of younger players, in a mode that's not exactly funky, but which owes a lot to the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Buddy Rich

Buddy & Soul
Pacific Jazz, 1969. Near Mint- Gatefold
Groovy stuff! We'd normally never say a bad word about Buddy (or else he'd sock us one!), but this album is particularly nice – as it features Rich's swinging late 60s group doing some pop/jazz covers of groovy 60s tunes, plus some very tasty originals! All tracks are pretty short, and the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Lester Young

Pres (Norgran)
Verve/Norgran, 1950/1951. Very Good+
As beautiful an illustration of the genius of Lester Young as you could ever hope to find – tight, short small group numbers recorded with a keen focus on Young's amazing tone – all served up with beautiful sound throughout! The cover bills the set as being by Young and his orchestra, ... LP, Vinyl record album
Verve, 1949. Very Good+
One of our favorite of Verve's "genius of" collections of Charlie Parker's work – largely because it includes some wonderful and oft-overlooked vocal tunes! 4 of the tracks on the set feature Bird blowing with a vocal chorus arranged by Dave Lambert – in a style that shouldn't ... Charlie Parker

Essential Charlie Parker
Verve, Early 50s. Near Mint- Gatefold
A nice retrospective including recordings with Max Roach, Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk, Buddy Rich, and many more, with titles including "Kim", "Just Friends", "Au Privave", "Funky Blues", "She Rote", "Swedish Schnapps", ... LP, Vinyl record album
Verve, 1957. Very Good+
A strange pairing – but that's sometimes what makes these Verve "pro meets pro" sets from the 50s so great. Getz and Johnson are backed by Oscar Peterson, Ray Brown, Herb Ellis, and Connie Kay – and the tracks are longish, with plenty of solo room in the open jam session mode ... LP, Vinyl record album
Verve, Early 50s. Near Mint-
Charlie Parker takes on the music of Cole Porter – with results that make for some of his most classic moments at Verve! Parker's horn is as hard-bitten as always, but it's also working here in a slightly lyrical vibe – one that brings out the warmth that Charlie could have at just the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jazz At The Philharmonic All-Stars

JATP All-Stars At The Opera House
Verve, 1957. Very Good+
Great long jam session work, very heavy on tenor sax – with appearances by Stan Getz, Lester Young, Coleman Hawkins, Illinois Jacquet, and Flip Phillips – plus Sonny Stitt on alto! Tracks are nice and long – and titles include "Stuffy", "Merry Go Round", and ... LP, Vinyl record album

Johnny Hodges & Wild Bill Davis

Mess Of Blues
Verve, 1963. Very Good
Straight ahead soul jazz traditionalism – with a lineup that includes Johnny Hodges; alto sax. Wild Bill Davis; organ. Kenny Burrell; guitar. Joe Wilder; trumpet. Osie Johnson or Ed Shaughnessy; drums. Features Davis' "Stolen Sweets", Hodges' "A & R Blues", "Lost ... LP, Vinyl record album
