Harriet Brown — Mall Of Fortune ... CD 3.99

A really great second set from Harriet Brown – one of those "recorded at home" soul records that may well set the tone for a generation to come! Brown's got this always-skittish, almost-nervous approach to his music – one that often echoes the lyrics of the tunes, and their openly personal sense of anxiety – this pent-up, wrapped-up mode that always feels like it's going to explode – and which maybe feels even more so because Brown put the whole project together himself, away from any companionship in the studio. Apart from two guest vocal appearances, the whole thing is Harriet's own – beautifully so – with titles that include "Retail Therapy", "Shower Up Saddle Up", "Window Shopping", "Holy Place", "Method", "Driver's Seat", and "Bag Away".  © 1996-2021, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Sealed

This is what it says, that the record is still held fast in shrink-wrap. We tend to be pretty suspicious about these things, so if the shrink-wrap doesn't look original, or if the record seems to have undergone some damage over time, we'll probably take it out of the wrapper to ensure that it's in good shape — which is why we don't have more of these. In some cases the shrink-wrap may be torn in spots, but if it's not possible the record has been taken out and played, the record will still qualify as "Sealed".

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

All Strung Out
Columbia, Late 60s. Near Mint-
Killer Latin soul from Mongo! At some level, it might be hard to keep track of his late 60s sides for Columbia – but all you have to know is that they're all great, filled with pop Latin soul grooves that pushed way past his contemporaries, dancing around the conga with tight arrangements by ... Love Is Stronger
RCA, 1971. Near Mint-
Love, Peace, & Happiness were one of the groups circulating around Harvy Fuqua's New Birth/Nite-Liters assemblage in the early 70's. On this early LP, they sing with a beautiful hard soul sound, with great arrangements by Riley Hampton. Some of the tracks have a politically conscious feel, ... LP, Vinyl record album

James Brown's great second album recorded live at the Apollo Theater in Harlem – a set we like even better than the first famous volume – because it's much more stretched-out, harder-hitting, and full of fire! Towering Toccata

Electric 70s work from Lalo Schifrin – with a tight uptempo funky sound that's similar to his strong "cop show" soundtrack themes of the time!
