Symphony Of The Birds

LP (Item 967012) MGM, 1968 — Condition: Very Good

A weird little record! The album is a "symphony of Brazilian birds" – and is literally that! The album features assorted bird calls and songs, recorded for the set – backed up by larger orchestrations that range from serious to playful, and which almost stand in contrast to the birds! The whole thing must be heard to be believed – as the two elements are barely tied together, and the bird songs are really high in the mix – so that the whole thing almost sounds like a mistake! Titles include "Luar Do Sertao", "Tico Tico No", "Sukiyaki", and "Emperor Waltz".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Geraldo Vespar

New Breeze From Brazil
Capitol, 1968. Near Mint-
Mellow bossa guitar – in the tradition of Bonfa or Gilberto, but lacking the same sort of soul. Not bad, but kind of a "cash in on the big names" release by Capitol – although the record was originally recorded in Brazil, so it's at least got some sort of cred. Titles ... LP, Vinyl record album

Meireles E Sua Orquestra

Brasilian Explosion
EMI (Brazil), 1973. Near Mint-
A classic bit of lost funky electric piano from Brazil! The album has a similar feel to Deodato's early 70's work, and includes a killer electric version of "Also Sprach Zarathustra" that's very similar to Deodato's "2001" – soaring along on a great funky groove, with ... LP, Vinyl record album

Elis Regina

Elis Regina in London
Philips (Brazil), 1969. Very Good+
Elis Regina hits the London scene of the late 60s – with amazing results that make the album one of her best from the early years! The style here is still quite bossa-oriented, but backings are done by Peter Knight – who'd worked with Scott Walker and some of the other hip British ... LP, Vinyl record album

Grupo Controle Digital

A Festa E Nossa
Phoenix Spink (Brazil), 1988. Near Mint-
A rare Brazilian album from the 80s, but one that's quite different than you might expect – as these guys have a clear love of keyboards that resonate with some of the bigger electro pop acts of the UK and European scene of the time! The group's really just a duo – Billy Jaguar and Gel ... LP, Vinyl record album

Olhos Negros Vivo
Tropical Diaspora (Germany), 2018. Sealed
A contemporary set from Brazil, but one with a groove that feels like it was lifted right from the 70s – especially that period later in the decade when samba soul modes were coming into play with warmer boogie modes! The set's a live one, and features the strong lead vocals of Renato Gama ... LP, Vinyl record album

Maysa sings here with great arrangements from maestro Erlon Chaves – warm, round, and fluid – in a way that mixes leaner bossa rhythms with the more romantic styles of an earlier generation! Kapp, Mid 60s. Very Good
A excellent set of instrumental bossa nova tunes by Roberto Menescal – one of Brazil's true musical geniuses of the 60s! The arrangements are bossa, but much more off-kilter than usual, with a weird edge, and groovy instrumentation, like vibes, that are not that common on Brazilian material ... LP, Vinyl record album

Very nice 2LP set that collects some of Herbie's best 60s work for Blue Note – and which moves past the hits to feature some nice gems from hard to find albums. Soul Searching
Atlantic, 1976. Near Mint-
Sublime mid 70s work from The Average White Band – and a record that really has the group deepening their groove a bit – moving past the heavier funk of their roots, into some mellower grooves that are totally great!
