Pele

LP (Item 9648) Atlantic, 1977 — Condition: Very Good+

Sergio Mendes' score to this film starring Pele from the height of his career. The music's got the range of sounds that you'd expect from a soundtrack – with some mellow cuts, and some more uptempo ones, but the mix is great, and the sound is nice and Braziliany, with some good electric moments. Pele sings vocals on one version of the title cut "My World Is A Ball", and Gerry Mulligan solos on another version of it. Cuts include "Big City", "Sadness of Goodbye", and "Na Bahia".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Cover has a promo stamp, light wear, and a peeled spot from sticker removal.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Buddah, 1971. Very Good Gatefold
Great bit of Brazilian jazz recorded by Airto, with Flora and Hermeto, for the Buddah label in 1971. Easily one of the greatest records he ever made, with perfect production, and just the right mix of Brazilian instrumentation and fusiony sounds. If you've ever heard one of his many weak albums ... Most of the classic work by this great Brazilian singer is now out of print on vinyl – but you can at least grab this nice extended "best of" compilation, which features 24 hard to find tracks! Ye-Me-Le
A&M, 1969. Very Good+
Way past the hits, and into some really great territory – a move that makes the record one of our favorite Sergio Mendes sets for A&M! The sweeter bossa pop style here is undercut with a bit more influence from late 60s Brazilian grooves – some of the more baroque turns that Sergio' ... LP, Vinyl record album

A pretty great little album from Bonfa – always one of the more corruptible bossa players, working here in a groovy set of pop arrangements by Deodato with a lively American twist! One of Astrud Gilberto's greatest albums of the 60s – a classic session produced for Verve by Creed Taylor, and featuring sweet gentle arrangements from Marty Paich, co-arranged with Antonio Carlos Jobim, who also plays guitar on the session next to the piano of Joao Donato! A lively batch of pop samba stuff from this big Brazilian artist of the 60's. The tracks are all fairly uptempo, with a sing song rhythm sound, and a nice 60's Brazilian pop groove. Tracks include "Leva Meu Samba", "Saudade Dela", "Sai Do Meu Caminho", "Vida De ... LP, Vinyl record album

Parachute/Casablanca, 1979. Very Good
Excellent work from Randy Brown – a great singer with a massive talent for being both smooth and deep at the same time, something we'd reserve for a rare few, like Frankie Beverly or Teddy Pendergrass during their best periods. Copper Plated Integrated Circuit

Plugged In Pop
Command, 1969. Very Good Gatefold
Very cool moog album with a Perry-Kingsley feel. That is, it's got sort of a sharp electronic sound, but with grooviness underneath that keeps the whole thing going along at a jaunty pace. At times, the electronic sounds will break down into a bunch of noise, and then jump into a swingin' poppy ... LP, Vinyl record album
