Alabaster DePlume — To Cy & Lee – Instrumentals Vol 1 ... LP 22.99

Beautifully meditative music from Alabaster DePlume – a set that brings together work from a variety of recorded projects from the past decade or so – finally getting full exposure in this Transatlantic collaboration between Chicago's International Anthem label and London's Total Refreshment Centre! The sound is a great illustration of the genre-crossing modes that have been going on in both scenes – as Alabaster's music is definitely beyond easy description or definition, and comes across in a way that's as personal as it is collaborative – since DePlume works with a whole host of different musicians on the recordings, mixing flute, percussion, strings, keyboards, and other elements together in a way that follows a spiritual legacy from the more spacey side of Alice Coltrane, to the west coast experiments of Carlos Nino and Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, to the changes taking place on the planet at present. Alabaster plays tenor and guitar, and vocalizes slightly – but never really sings – and titles include "Why Buzzardman Why", "Not My Ask", "Whisky Story Time", "If You're Sure You Want To", "What's Missing", and "Song Of The Foundling".  © 1996-2022, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Includes the printed inner sleeve, insert, and obi.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Jackie McLean

Monuments
RCA, 1979. Near Mint-
A rare electric outing from legendary altoist Jackie McLean – and one that comes off surprisingly well, given that the move was quite a shift for the reedman! The album's got a spiritual current that McLean developed in some of his earlier 70s material – like his gems for the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jazz Crusaders

Young Rabbits
Pacific Jazz/Blue Note, 1960s/1975. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold
A great collection of early work from this razor-sharp group – the young Texas-bred lineup that features Wilton Felder on tenor and alto, Wayne Henderson on trombone, Joe Sample on piano, and Stix Hooper on drums – all grooving hard in the years before they just became The Crusaders! ... Ornette Coleman

Town Hall 1962
ESP, 1962. Very Good+
A really unique chapter in the career of Ornette Coleman – an album that he produced by himself in 1962, away from any other label – as an effort to showcase the newly freer sounds of his music! The recording's the first in a really groundbreaking stretch for the 60s – and it was ... LP, Vinyl record album
Blue Note, 1958. Near Mint-
The scene may be changing, but nothing can dampen the fire of the great Bud Powell – and, if anything, this fifth installment in Blue Note's "Amazing" series may well have the pianist at his mature best! The rhythm duo are wonderful – more late 50s modern hardbop than some of ... LP, Vinyl record album

Nat Adderley

Scavenger
Milestone, 1968. Very Good+
One of the best-ever Nat Adderley albums, and a damn funky set of tracks that has a tight soulful feel! The session's got a similar feel to some of the other rare late 60s Milestone albums (like the 2 killers by Bobby Timmons!) – especially in that it's got a group that plays with the ... Fire Up
Fantasy, 1973. Very Good+
Bay Area organist Merl Saunders gets some help from rock-famous friends Tom Fogerty and Jerry Garcia in this surprisingly listenable album of groovy little tunes with a San Francisco jazz funk sound. Prestige, 1961. Very Good+
Searing live work from Eric Dolphy – part of a series of recordings that set a whole new standard for live jazz recording! Miles Davis

Sorcerer
Columbia, 1967. Very Good+
Another bold new direction for the legendary Miles Davis Quintet of the 60s – a set that has some of the angular styles of earlier albums, but also a bit more of the flowing grace to come in the electric years! A key illustration of this is the leadoff track "Prince Of Darkness" ... LP, Vinyl record album

Irakere

Irakere
Columbia, 1979. Very Good+ Gatefold
A landmark album from this powerhouse Cuban group of the 70s – their first record issued formally to an American market, and quite possibly their greatest effort of the decade! RCA, 1975. Near Mint-
One of the spookiest albums we've ever heard from moog maestro Mort Garson – way darker and more complex than his Wozzard Of Id or moogy horoscope projects – with a feel that's much more like his legendary Black Mass album! Like that one, there's a fair current of supernatural running ... LP, Vinyl record album
Areito (Cuba), Mid 70s. Very Good+
Great stuff from this legendary Cuban jazz group – live material, and arguably better than even their studio LPs from the time!
