To Cy & Lee – Instrumentals Vol 1

LP (Item 960480) International Anthem, 2020 — Condition: Very Good+
Also available
Alabaster DePlume — To Cy & Lee – Instrumentals Vol 1 ... LP 22.99
Beautifully meditative music from Alabaster DePlume – a set that brings together work from a variety of recorded projects from the past decade or so – finally getting full exposure in this Transatlantic collaboration between Chicago's International Anthem label and London's Total Refreshment Centre! The sound is a great illustration of the genre-crossing modes that have been going on in both scenes – as Alabaster's music is definitely beyond easy description or definition, and comes across in a way that's as personal as it is collaborative – since DePlume works with a whole host of different musicians on the recordings, mixing flute, percussion, strings, keyboards, and other elements together in a way that follows a spiritual legacy from the more spacey side of Alice Coltrane, to the west coast experiments of Carlos Nino and Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, to the changes taking place on the planet at present. Alabaster plays tenor and guitar, and vocalizes slightly – but never really sings – and titles include "Why Buzzardman Why", "Not My Ask", "Whisky Story Time", "If You're Sure You Want To", "What's Missing", and "Song Of The Foundling".  © 1996-2022, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Includes the printed inner sleeve, insert, and obi.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Impulse, 1961/1977. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
Fantastic unreleased work from the famous 1961 recordings of John Coltrane at the Village Vanguard – every bit as wonderful as the material that was issued on the core album! Herbie Hancock & Foday Musa Suso

Village Life
Columbia, 1985. Near Mint-
An early world music/jazz collaboration production from Bill Laswell, a format he'd return to again and again in later years. For the most part, the tunes seem to be excursions on Musa Suso's native Gambian rhythms, plucked out as gentle arpeggios on the Kora, with Herbie's subtle keys and synths ... LP, Vinyl record album

Gerry Mulligan

Mainstream Of Jazz Vol 3
EmArcy (Japan), Mid 50s. Near Mint-
A rare Japanese-only part 3 to Gerry's Mainstream Of Jazz album – featuring tracks recorded in the same sessions, but unissued at the time! The group on the session is a sextet with a really wonderful approach – Bob Brookmeyer on trombone, Zoot Sims on tenor, and John Eardley on ... LP, Vinyl record album
Blue Note/Up Front, 1961. Sealed
This isn't one of those "phoned in" sessions that seem to turn up way too much in contemporary jazz! The album's a real classic from Dexter's first big "comeback" period – and represents the strength of his Blue Note years at their best! Gordon's rich, full tone isn't ... LP, Vinyl record album

Dreams So Real
ECM, 1976. Near Mint-
Gary Burton takes on the music of Carla Bley – in a wonderfully sensitive set that opens up rich new colors in her music! This is a repackaged version of an album that was originally issued under Cecil Taylor's name, under the title Hard Drive (and later Stereo Drive, or something like that). ECM, 1980. Near Mint-
Moody atmospherics from the second wave of ECM – a spacious trio outing that features Charlie Haden on bass, Jan Garbarek on saxophones, and Egberto Gismonti on guitars and piano. With any other group of players, the setting might be a bit too spare and relaxed for our ears, but Gismonti ... LP, Vinyl record album

Human Arts Ensemble

Under The Sun (Arista Freedom)
Arista Freedom, 1973. Near Mint-
Chicago had the Art Ensemble of Chicago at the end of the 60s – and St Louis had the fantastic Human Arts Ensemble at the start of the 70s – a wonderfully creative jazz group who shared a lot of the same ideas of improvisation and artistic freedom as the AACM up in the Windy City! Un Poco Loco
Enja, 1986. Near Mint-
A real Latin jazz cooker from Orquesta Conexion Latina – a late 80s German group, but one that cooks with a hard New York vibe! My Road Our Road
Elektra, 1981. Sealed
Nice stuff from this ex-member of the group War – and a record that has Lee's trademark jazzy groove firmly in place! His spacey harmonica sound is spread over a bunch of slow steppin' grooves, with a nice electric feel. Tracks include "My Road", "Up all Night", "Our ... LP, Vinyl record album
