Seminal Afro Funk from Monomono – a killer combo from singer/percussionist Joni Haastrup, with a groove that's right up there with the best acts on the Lagos scene of the 70s! There's a nice degree of warmth in the music – thanks to some complicated guitar and basslines, which don't just have the usual highly-rhythmic groove, but inflect things with a melodic energy that's mighty nice! The blend is instantly entrancing – tight, but never overly polished – with a quality that really sets the record apart from other Afro Funk you might own. Tracks include "Plain Fighting", "Get Yourself Together", "Awareness Is Wot You Need", "Tire Loma Da Nigbehin", and "Ipade Aladun".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We have only one grade for non-new CDs at Dusty Groove — "Used CD". This grade is somewhat all-encompassing, but we choose it because we try to offer Used CDs in the best shape possible.

When you purchase a Used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use but if there are significant details or defects we will list them underneath the item — just like we do with LPs — so look there for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details.

All of our Used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. If you purchase a Used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly — and if it does not, then you may return it for a full refund.

Tummy Touch/Soundway (UK), Early 70s. Used Gatefold
Massive music from Monomono – and a set of Afro Funk put together with a wonderful criss-crossing of sounds! The style here isn't just the familiar grooves you might expect – and instead, there's almost a post-colonial vibe going on – an ear towards London, and another towards ... CD
Soundway (UK), 1970s. Used
Forget the "rock" in the title, and just focus on the "funk" – because this set of tracks is a massively heavy batch of Nigerian numbers from the 70s – all with the same solidly soulful feel as more familiar Afro Funk work of the time! There's a definite emphasis on ... CD
Soundway (UK), Mid 70s. Used
Massive funk from the Nigerian scene of the 70s – and miles away from US disco of the time! These cuts represent a tighter, more uptempo side of African funk – but they're never as polished or professional as American club or disco – no soaring strings, female chorus vocals, or ... CD

Joni Haastrup

Wake Up Your Mind
Tummy Touch/Soundway (UK), 1978. Used Gatefold
Funky funky solo work from Joni Haastrup – an artist who's also known for his work in Monomono, and who sounds equally great on his own! Joni's got this tight approach that wraps together Nigerian grooves of the 70s scene, and some bolder soul star energy that would be right at home in the ... CD

La Yegros

Magnetismo
Soundway (UK), 2016. Used
A great update of older cumbia modes – served up here in a style that's extremely fresh, and very fitting for the fierce vocal approach of La Yegros! Yegros spends her time between Buenos Aires and Paris, and that global range definitely shows in the music – as she mixes a host of ... CD

Bouncing rhythms from Les Loups Noirs – great little grooves that still retain some of the rootsier elements of Haitian music! Percussion is quite heavy on most numbers, and has this bassy quality that you can really feel in the speakers when you turn the record up nice and loud – a ... CD
