Greatest – Original Soundtrack

LP (Item 9506) Arista, 1977 — Condition: Near Mint-
A great little album, put together to accompany one of Muhammad Ali's finest moments on the big screen – in a blend of music that's way deeper than the usual sounds you'd hear ringside! Michael Masser helmed the set – produced and wrote most of the material – but also with key contributions from George Benson, whose vocals grace some of the sweeter songs on the album – plus Mandrill, who help with some of the more hard-driving funky cuts! The set features the extended clubby groover "Ali Bombaye" – an almost Afro Funk-ish tune, performed by Mandrill – and other cuts include the mellower "I Always Knew I Had It In Me" and "The Greatest Love Of All", both sung by George Benson, plus "Ali's Theme", which is pretty nice.  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Cover has a small top corner stain, but is nice otherwise!)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Gil Scott-Heron

Best Of Gil Scott-Heron
Arista, Late 70s/Early 80s. Near Mint-
A nice best-of collection of Gil Scott Heron's work on Arista Records – issued in the 80s, with Gil looking a bit odd in a "Members Only" kind of way on the cover! Still, the music is great – and titles include th the extra new track "Re-Ron", an electro track about ... LP, Vinyl record album

Gil Scott-Heron

Bridges
Arista, 1977. Very Good+
An oft-overlooked jazzy gem from Gil Scott-Heron and Brian Jackson – and a beautifully swinging session that has Gil toning it down a bit, and working into a nicely musical groove that gets past the heavy politics of earlier years! The record's a great showcase for the more upbeat side of ... LP, Vinyl record album

Dionne Warwick

Finder Of Lost Loves
Arista, 1985. Very Good+
A surprisingly nice album from the later years of Dionne Warwick's career – a set recorded at a time when the lady may have been a bit of a parody of herself on screen, but could still sound great in the studio! The approach is an extension of Warwick's Bacharach roots into a adult ... LP, Vinyl record album

Patrice Rushen

Watch Out!
Arista, 1987. Very Good
Patrice Rushen in a crisp 80s soul mode! Watch Out finds Patrice really cutting down the keyboards in favor of stronger vocals right out front – breaking all the rules, as the title of second song tells it – and it works really well! Most of the arrangements, synth and drum ... LP, Vinyl record album

Friends In Love
Arista, 1982. Very Good+
An Arista groover from Dionne Warwick! Here she's working in warm, mature territory – a sound that's a bit more like the vibe she explored on her late 70s records – a maturing past the original Bacharach years, with an all-adult style that really works with her voice. Titles include ... LP, Vinyl record album

Impressions

This Is My Country
Curtom, 1968. Very Good+
The Impressions are wearing their politics much more on their sleeve at this point – what with a cover that shows them standing in the rubble of the ghetto, and a title that is both a bold proclamation of ownership, and a sad comment on the state of affairs. Curtis Mayfield's pen is in ... LP, Vinyl record album

Michael Jackson

Thriller
Epic, 1982. Sealed Gatefold
Arguably the last true moment of genius in Michael Jackson's career – a record that sold a bazillion copies around the world – and for plenty good reason! Fly Away
Marlin, 1978. Sealed
The second US album from Euro disco outfit Voyage – a group who manage to bring in some nice progressive and jazzy elements to the mix! Ray Charles

Live In Concert
ABC, 1964. Near Mint-
A classic live set from Ray Charles – one that equally showcases all the best sides of his sound in the mid 60s!
