One of our favorite-ever albums from the great Stanley Turrentine – a really hard-burning session from his earliest days as a leader – and one of the key dates he cut with his brother Tommy Turrentine on trumpet! Both players are wonderful – a sharply soulful team coming off of work with the Max Roach group, but even more confident and powerful as soloists here on this Blue Note session, where they really get to shine! Horace Parlan plays piano, and blocks out grooves that are perfect for each brother to really take flight on their solos – and although the album was originally unissued at the time it was recorded, it's gone onto become a key building block in Stan's legendary catalog. Titles include "Fine Lil' Lass", "Stolen Sweets", "Thomasville", and "My Girl Is Just Enough Woman For Me". Includes the bonus tracks "Fine Lil' Lass alt take" & "Just In Time".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(SHMCD pressing. Out of print. Includes obi.)

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We have only one grade for non-new CDs at Dusty Groove — "Used CD". This grade is somewhat all-encompassing, but we choose it because we try to offer Used CDs in the best shape possible.

When you purchase a Used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use but if there are significant details or defects we will list them underneath the item — just like we do with LPs — so look there for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details.

All of our Used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. If you purchase a Used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly — and if it does not, then you may return it for a full refund.

Stanley Turrentine

Stan 'The Man' Turrentine
Time/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1960. Used
One of the best Stanley Turrentine albums ever! This hard-wailing set is from the early days of Stan's time at Blue Note – and like his best early sides for that label, this one has him blowing with an edgey tone that rarely ever surfaced in his later, sweeter recordings. Stan's got a sound ... CD

That's Where It's At
Blue Note, 1962. Used
Where it's at with Stanley Turrentine – circa 1962 – a time when the tenorist was really hitting on all burners, and turning out some tremendous work for Blue Note! The album's got Stan working with a special guest – a rare Blue Note appearance from pianist Les McCann, who's also ... CD

Rough & Tumble
Blue Note, 1966. Used

Art Blakey

Buhaina's Delight
Blue Note, 1961. Used
A landmark recording by a whole new chapter in Art Blakey's career! Count Basie & His Orchestra

Basie Meets Bond
United Artists/Blue Note, 1965. Used
An excellent gimmick – and yet another way that United Artists was trying to push its "Bond" catalog in the 60s! Count Basie brings a soulful swing to the work of John Barry – hitting hard on the tracks with his own smoking piano, and an orchestra filled with some of his best ... CD

Lou Donaldson & The 3 Sounds

LD + 3 (XRCD24 pressing)
Blue Note, 1959. Used
A classic meeting between alto giant Lou Donaldson and Blue Note's crack Three Sounds combo – the great piano trio led by the mighty Gene Harris! The formula was one that Blue Note employed on a number of sessions from the time – and it makes a lot of sense, because the Three Sounds ... CD
