✈

An early vocal outing from the star of Psycho – surprisingly nice, with this unusual blue-tinged vibe! Plus, the arrangements are great – handled by jazzman Al Cohn, and directed by Urbie Green!  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Out of print, includes obi.)

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We have only one grade for non-new CDs at Dusty Groove — "Used CD". This grade is somewhat all-encompassing, but we choose it because we try to offer Used CDs in the best shape possible.

When you purchase a Used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use but if there are significant details or defects we will list them underneath the item — just like we do with LPs — so look there for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details.

All of our Used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. If you purchase a Used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly — and if it does not, then you may return it for a full refund.

Night Life
Vik/RCA (Spain), 1956. Used
An RCA classic from Lurlean Hunter – a singer who's sadly overlooked these days, but who was a real up-and-comer from the Chicago scene in the 50s! Lurlean's got a style that's surprisingly smooth at times – much richer and more jazz-based than the sometimes-bluesy cover images she was ... CD

Mark Murphy

Song For The Geese
RCA/Reverso, 1997. Used
Recent work by Mark Murphy – but as sublime as most of his best stuff from the 70s! The set was recorded in Europe, with the kind of respectful backing you'd expect from a scene that's loved Murphy's work for years – and which have done quite a bit to keep his unique style of jazz ... CD

A very well-recorded live set – one in which Harry Belafonte's voice echoes out beautifully in the space of Carnegie Hall, alongside hip backings from Robert Corman! CD

Abbey Lincoln

It's Magic
Riverside/OJC, 1958. Used
Early work by Abbey – recorded in a mode that's straighter than she'd sound a few years later – less angry, more like other jazz vocalists of the time, but still with that unmistakable Abbey Lincoln quality in the voice! The arrangements on the set are by Benny Golson – using ... CD

Ember/Airmail (Japan), 1964. Used
An obscure one from Annie Ross – recording here as a solo act back in England after leaving her famous group with Dave Lambert and John Hendricks! The style here is a bit like some of the solo work that Ross cut in the US at the end of the 50s – particularly her sides for Pacific Jazz ... CD

Johnny Hartman

Unforgettable
Impulse, 1966. Used
An excellent batch of rare material by vocalist Johnny Hartman, and a very strong set of tracks that shows a side of his work that's often ignored! Usually, Hartman gets cited for his slow, moody, syrupy sound – such as that which he used in his classic recordings with Coltrane. However, we ... CD
