One of the standout gems from Lionel Hampton's 50s sessions for Verve – wonderful small combo recordings that let Hamp stretch out in freer solo space than usual! Although the Hampton fame always lay in his popularly-touring bigger band, and all its related pyrotechnics, we've always loved Lionel's sound in a more intimate setting – and the way his ringing tone on the vibes prefaces work to come in later years by Bobby Hutcherson, Steve Nelson, and others – bold, soulful, and surprisingly modern at times. There's a metallic quality to the solo work on these sides that we really like a lot – and which offers a nice contrast to Milt Jackson's vibes of the period through its more powerfully pronounced understanding of the instrument's tone. The core group is a quartet – with Oscar Peterson on piano, Ray Brown on bass, and Buddy Rich on drums – and half the set features the clarinet of Buddy DeFranco. All tracks are nice and long – almost jam-session style – and titles include "Soft Winds", "Airmail Special", "The Way You Look Tonight", and "It's Only A Paper Moon".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We have only one grade for non-new CDs at Dusty Groove — "Used CD". This grade is somewhat all-encompassing, but we choose it because we try to offer Used CDs in the best shape possible.

When you purchase a Used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use but if there are significant details or defects we will list them underneath the item — just like we do with LPs — so look there for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details.

All of our Used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. If you purchase a Used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly — and if it does not, then you may return it for a full refund.

A great CD that combines 2 Verve albums by Hamp – both in the mode of his excellent early 50s side! Unlike earlier work, Hamp here plays in a small group setting – working with Buddy Rich, Oscar Peterson, Ray Brown, and Buddy De Franco, carving out long tracks that have a heck of a lot ... CD

High Contrast
Verve/Blue Thumb, 1970. Used
Excellent early 70s work from jazz guitarist Gabor Szabo – a super-dope album that's one of the best he ever recorded! Part of the success of the record has to do with the presence of Bobby Womack – normally a soul singer, but also a heck of a guitarist, playing here alongside Szabo in ... CD

A really unusual little record for Jimmy Smith – and a set that actually features a bit of singing alongside his usual work on the Hammond! The set's got a punched-up style that's very much in the best groovy Verve 60s mode – as Jimmy works with some lively arrangements from the great ... CD

A real lost chapter in the career of vibist Dave Pike – an obscure one-off Latin session recorded for Decca in the mid 60s! The album was done in the years between Pike's first few early jazz sides and his later tripped-out sessions for MPS and Vortex – and features Dave leading a ... CD

What can we say? This is the ultimate Miles Davis album – the one that includes so many songs that we've heard way too much in Starbucks, in retail stores, or at a friend's house who claims to be a "jazz expert", but is really a yuppie dilettante. Yet somehow, over all the years, ... CD
