Reggae Greats (UK pressing)

LP (Item 940627) Island (UK), Mid 70s — Condition: Near Mint-

A great collection of some of the great soulful reggae Toots and The Maytals licensed to Island in the mid 70s, with all the enduring hits: "54-46 That's My Number", "Reggae Got Soul", "Funky Kingston", "Sweet & Dandy", "Time Tough" and "Pressure Drop".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(80s UK pressing.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Live Good
Island/United Artists, 1978. Near Mint-
With the rawer vocal approach of the roots movement, it's easy to forget that loads of Jamaica's finest singers were heavily influenced by American soul. Ken Boothe never let go of the smooth, soulful sound he established early on at Studio One. This album's part of United Artist's great "Ant ... LP, Vinyl record album

Journey To Addis
Island, 1978. Very Good+
It may be pop reggae or whatever you want to call it – but the strength of the group's version of "Now That We Found Love" really pushed them over the top! That track's the real winner here – a smooth modern soul number with just a slight hint of Kingston, grooving away in a ... LP, Vinyl record album

Harder They Come
Island, 1972. Very Good+ Gatefold
A record that's not only a landmark in Jamaican music – but also a set that was to reggae what Curtis Mayfield's Superfly was to 70s soul! In other words, the set not only raised the bar for all the competition, it also ended up in a lot more record collections than most of them too – ... LP, Vinyl record album

Heartbeat, 1982. Very Good+
A later effort from Winston Rodney, and though not quite up to the high standard he'd set in the early and mid 70s, still very solid roots rock. 9 self produced tunes, including the title track, "Image", "Education", "She's Mine", "Message" and "Jah Is ... LP, Vinyl record album

Birth Of A Legend (2LP version)
Calla, 1960s. Very Good+ 2LP
Early, early Coxsone Dodd produced sides of groovy rocksteady, voiced by a young Bob Marley with Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer. While we don't find this material nearly as compelling as his later work produced by Lee Perry and then his huge international hits, it's great Studio One rocksteady and an ... Mystic Man

A great late 70s album from former Wailer Tosh, to our ears a good bit better than Bush Doctor, the set that had preceded it. The second album From LKJ, a tough and tight follow up to Dread Beat and Blood, with the poet coming just as hard out the box this time around as the first.
