Rocket Symphony

LP (Item 938337) Bvhaast (Netherlands), 1984 — Condition: Near Mint-

An obscure set from the strong 80s years of the Dutch scene – a group led by JC Tans on tenor, with Boy Raaymakers on trumpet, Wolter Wierbos on trombone, Sean Bergin on alto, and Paul Stocker on baritone.  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Bvhaast (Holland), 1976. Near Mint-
The amazing trombonist, recorded at a time in his career when his talents weren't that often captured on record! The set is a very open-ended quartet date – with Rudd on trombone, in a cool Dutch group that includes amazing tenor from Hans Dulfer – plus bass from Arjen Gorter and drums ... George Braith

Blue Note, 1964. Good+
A masterpiece from George Braith – one of the most unique sax players of the 60s! The album's a Blue Note classic in the Larry Young vein – with lots of free spiralling modal lines, and heavenly solos on organ, guitar, and reeds – the former of which are played by Billy Gardner ... Pacific Jazz, Early 50s. Good+
Interesting early work from Chico – one that has him working in a trio format, quite different than the chamber modern work of his more famous quintet! The style is not dissimilar, though – as the trio lineup is drums, bass, and guitar – with both of the stringed instruments ... LP, Vinyl record album

Larry Coryell

Vanguard, 1970. Very Good
An expansive early 70s set from Larry Coryell, joined by an all star group of players: John McLaughlin, Chick Corea, Miroslav Vitous and Billy Cobham. Oscar Pettiford

Basically Duke (10 inch LP)
Bethlehem, 1954. Good+
Basically Duke, but a whole lot more too – a beautiful set from Oscar Pettiford, and ostensibly a session of Ellington material – but one that features some great arrangements that really go past the obvious! Tunes are partially penned by Duke, and material is played by a hip octet ... LP, Vinyl record album

Reprise, 1962. Very Good
A Neal Hefti spectacular – featuring 40 guitars and 8 pianos, according to the cover – and done in a mode that's very different than his work with Count Basie! As you'll guess from the title, the tunes here are all TV numbers – a range of groovy themes from the late 50s and early ... LP, Vinyl record album

Roland Kirk

Volunteered Slavery
Atlantic, 1969. Very Good+
Our favorite album ever from Roland Kirk – and a beautiful mix of two different sides of his genius! Side one's got Roland doing these crazy takes on late 60's pop cuts like "My Cherie Amour" and "Say a Little Prayer", plus his own "songs", done with soulful ... LP, Vinyl record album
AVA, 1963. Very Good+
One of the few records ever cut by bassist Ben Tucker – known to most as the composer of 60s jazz hit "Comin' Home Baby", which was riding very high in the charts at the time of this session! The album's a very rhythmic one – with Ben in the lead on bass, working with a combo ... LP, Vinyl record album
