Treasured Hits From The South – Presented By Nick Charles

LP (Item 937704) Stax, Early 60s — Condition: Good

One of the earliest albums on Stax Records – a strange mix of that label's own soul music with titles from Sun Records too – a fascinating document of Memphis, with a strangely collegiate image on the front! Includes work by William Bell, Carla Thomas, Booker T & The MGs, and The Mar-Keys – as well as tracks by Charlie Rich, Carl Mann, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Thomas Wayne – plus one by Nick Charles too.  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Note: vinyl has a slight warp, but played fine for us. Cover has some light wear.)

Good

  • A record that you'd buy to play, cheap, but which you wouldn't buy for collecting.
  • Will have marks across all parts of the playing surface, and will most likely play with surface noise throughout. May have some other significant flaws, such as residue, or a track that skips.
  • In most cases, a poor quality copy of a very difficult to find record.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Staple Singers

Staple Swingers
Stax, 1970. Very Good-
The title's a bit of a joke, given the cover image – but it's also no lie either, as The Staple Singers are definitely swinging here – taking their gospel roots into a whole new direction in righteous soul, one that countless other acts would copy at the time! The music here is upbeat, ... LP, Vinyl record album
Stax, 1972. Very Good- Gatefold
About as classic as you can get with the Staple Singers! Motor Booty Affair
Casablanca, 1978. Very Good
The Mothership goes under water – as George Clinton and crew groove away nicely on this water-themed set of tracks designed to raise Atlantis from the deep! Jon Lucien

Rashida
RCA, 1973. Very Good
Amazing work from the great Jon Lucien – and probably his best-ever record! Fatback Band

Keep On Steppin'
Event, 1974. Very Good
Quite possibly the last really hard-hitting funk album from The Fatback Band – and although their first record on the Event label, a set that cooks every bit as hard as their first few for Perception! The style here is funky 45 soul at its best – lots of hard crackling drums, funky ... LP, Vinyl record album
