You Can Sing On The Left Or Bark On The Right

LP (Item 935169) ABC, 1976 — Condition: Sealed
Gatefold

A record with a gimmicky title and cover, but a real overlooked gem from mid 70s ABC Records – handled with sublime care in the studio from producer Gary Katz, engineer Roger Nichols, and a host of session players who worked on some of the Steely Dan records of the time! Yet Dirk Hamilton's approach here is quite different than some of the smoother projects of the period – as the singer's got a nice sort of rasp to his style that would have been right at home in a redneck rock mode, but which really sounds even better, and a lot more unique here – alongside these perfect instrumental flourishes that underscore his vocals in just the right way – never overwhelming them, but giving them the sort of direction that really knocks the record out of the park. All tunes are originals, and really beautifully penned in this sophisticated, post-Dylan mode – on titles that include "She Don't Squash Bugs", "Little Big Time Man", "Wasn't That One Night Good", "The Sweet Forever", "Waterfall", and "When She Kiss Ya Like She Love".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Still sealed, but shrinkwrap is open a bit. Cover has a cut corner.)

Sealed

This is what it says, that the record is still held fast in shrink-wrap. We tend to be pretty suspicious about these things, so if the shrink-wrap doesn't look original, or if the record seems to have undergone some damage over time, we'll probably take it out of the wrapper to ensure that it's in good shape — which is why we don't have more of these. In some cases the shrink-wrap may be torn in spots, but if it's not possible the record has been taken out and played, the record will still qualify as "Sealed".

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

We've always considered Steely Dan one of the quintessential 70s "Album Oriented Rock" bands, in that all of there albums work so well as a whole, so the idea of a greatest hits collection doesn't exactly work for us. Still, taken out of context, these songs are still gems, and listening ... LP, Vinyl record album

70s work from British blues rock legend John Mayall – done in a Cali style that still holds on to his roots, but gives the music a leaner, funkier style overall!
