Nassau Funk

CD (Item 934763) Alston/Playback, Early 70s — Condition: Used
$9.99 ...

CD

Fantastic funk from Beginning Of The End – one of the coolest, grooviest, most unique funk groups of the 70s – and one who've got a real criss-crossing of styles in their sound! As you'd guess from the title, these guys hail from Nassau, in the Bahamas – but their sound is hardly the stale calypso of the earlier generation, or some of the more familiar island hybrids that were playing for the tourists. Instead, these guys completely reinvent funk from the ground up – adding in lots of their own special styles of rhythm and inflection, with elements that were learned from their home scene, but then refitted for a mode that's much more American funk overall – making these guys one of the few island acts to challenge the likes of Fatback or Kool & The Gang! The set's an extremely well-chosen batch of tracks from the group's few recordings – and titles include the classic "Funky Nassau (parts 1 & 2)", plus "Monkey Tamarind", "Super Woman", "Doin The Funky Do", "That's What I Get", "When Se Made Me Promise", "In The Deep Bahamian Boogie", "Fishman", "Pretty Girl", "I've Got The News", "Bluestrain", "Jump In The Water", "Gee Whiz It's Christmas", "Sleep On Dream On", "Trip To Nowhere", and "Come Down Baby".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We have only one grade for non-new CDs at Dusty Groove — "Used CD". This grade is somewhat all-encompassing, but we choose it because we try to offer Used CDs in the best shape possible.

When you purchase a Used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use but if there are significant details or defects we will list them underneath the item — just like we do with LPs — so look there for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details.

All of our Used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. If you purchase a Used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly — and if it does not, then you may return it for a full refund.

Duke/Playback, Late 60s. Used
Great great work from the mighty Ernie K Doe – a legendary New Orleans singer who's best known for a few big hits – but who steps out here on some overlooked singles for Duke Records from the 60s! This material's not nearly as well known as Doe's records for the Minit and Instant label ... CD

Roy C Hammond

More Sex & More Soul
Mercury/Playback, 1977. Used
Classic 70s southern soul from Roy C – a brilliant follow-up to his excellent Sex & Soul album, but a great little record that more than stands on its own! Although Roy's roots are in New York City, his sound here is one that echoes strongly with the changes going on down in the Memphis, ... CD

Graham Central Station

Ain't No Bout-A-Doubt It
Warner, 1975. Used
One of the high points of Larry Graham's career – a hard-jamming set of guitar-based funk that forever put Graham Central Station on the map! There's a virtuosity to the record that's really stunning – bass, guitar, and drums all dropping into place magically alongside one another ... CD
20th Century, 1977. Used
Who cares about "someone you love"? We're just happy that Barry White's singing for us! The album's one of the maestro's biggest selling albums of the 70s, and for good reason – as the whole thing's a sexy symphony all the way through, filled with as many stepping rhythms as it is ... CD

Parliament

Trombipulation
Casablanca, 1980. Used
Often overlooked, but a very tasty album of late grooves from Parliament – not as much of a major hit as their previous records, but maybe even better because of that! The album's got the group's sound merging a bit with the Funkadelic vibe – that post-psych style of the George Clinton ... CD

T Connection

Take It To The Limit
Capitol/PTG (Netherlands), 1984. Used
A sweet lean set from T-Connection – still every bit as funky as back in their late 70s years, but with a different sort of style for the new generation! The music's got that great 80s groove approach that Capitol Records excelled at during the time – and the group's a bit more ... CD

Rick James

Throwin' Down
Gordy (Japan), 1982. Used
Rick James is massively throwing down on this classic set – tight, right, and on the money all the way through – in that trademark groove that so many others would try to cop, but never get this right! The album bristles with energy right from the start – lots of bass at the ... CD

Ritchie Family

All Night All Right
RCA/PTG (Netherlands), 1983. Used
Sweet dancefloor soul from an early 80s line-up of The Ritchie Family – this one featuring Linda James, Jacqui Smith-Lee and Vera Brown – going All Night All Right on a strong batch of synth flavored grooves! The bigger hits of the commercial disco boom were well behind them by this ... CD
Westbound, 1974. Used
A blistering little set from Funkadelic – one that features the return of Eddie Hazel's guitar, finely honed to the leaner, more soul-based sound of the group in the mid 70s! The title is prophetic, as the group are really "standing on the verge" here – working hard to ... CD

Alice Coltrane

Ptah, The El Daoud
Impulse, 1970. Used
Our favorite-ever album by Alice Coltrane – a masterpiece of spirit and soul, recorded in a wonderfully open-handed style! The album's mostly a spare batch of tracks cut by Alice and her trio with Ron Carter and Ben Riley – but also features some guest work on sax by Joe Henderson and ... CD

Alice Coltrane

Translinear Light
Impulse, 2004. Used
Mindblowing work from Alice Coltrane – an album of incredible beauty that easily sits with the best of her classic early recordings for Impulse! The album's got a spare, contemplative quality, but it's also never sleepy – and instead steps forth with the tonal building and modal moving ... CD
