Latin Connection

CD (Item 931500) Fania, 1981 — Condition: Used
$24.99 ...

A full-on set from the mighty Fania All-Stars – a session that matches some of the larger arrangements of their Columbia Records albums, but which also returns the group to more of a salsa-focused groove! Tracks are somewhat short – none of the jam sessions of the group's earliest years – but the sound is top-shelf all the way through, and a lot more classic than you'd guess from the cheesy cocaine image on the cover! Group members include Papo Luca on piano, Nicky Marrero on timbales, Roberto Roena on bongos, Yomo Toro on cuatro, and Lewis Khan on trombone – and singers include Hector Lavoe, Adalberto Santiago, Willie Colon, Ismael Rivera, and Celia Cruz. Titles include "Semilla De Amor", "Bilongo", "La Montana", "Rosa En El Fango", "Mi So Den Boso", and "Nina".  © 1996-2019, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Out of print Musica Latina pressing, rear tray card has a crease.)

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We have only one grade for non-new CDs at Dusty Groove — "Used CD". This grade is somewhat all-encompassing, but we choose it because we try to offer Used CDs in the best shape possible.

When you purchase a Used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use but if there are significant details or defects we will list them underneath the item — just like we do with LPs — so look there for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details.

All of our Used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. If you purchase a Used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly — and if it does not, then you may return it for a full refund.

Ray Barretto

Fania, 1975. Used
A lost gem in the 70s catalog of Ray Barretto – a fantastic album with some really wonderful tracks! Although Ray's clearly in his salsa mode here, he's also got a very strong jazz approach to the tracks – picking up the changes, tones, and colors used on his Other Road album, and ... CD

Bobby Valentin

Rey Del Bajo
Fania, 1974. Used
Bobby Valentin was certainly the king of the bass by the time of this record – and a player who'd helped bring the electric instrument from its strong 60s use in Latin Soul to one of the key components in salsa rhythms of the 70s! The set follows very strongly in bold sound of Valentin's ... CD

Fania All-Stars

Tribute To Tito Rodriguez
Fania, 1976. Used
The Fania All Stars pay tribute to older Latin great Tito Rodriguez – in a set of shorter tracks that's really the group's first true outing in the studio! The format here is quite different than the earlier live albums cut by the group – a sound that's a bit more focused, and without ... CD
International/Fania/Codigo, 1973. Used
The mighty Apollo Sound combo at the height of their powers – hard-hitting on percussion, but also sparkling with some jazzier touches on tenor sax, flute, and trombone! Roberto Roena had a slightly looser groove than some of his contemporaries, and as you'll hear on this set, there's space ... CD

Willie Colon

El Juicio
Fania, 1972. Used
Supposedly the end of Willie Colon's early "crime" career – as the title and cover imply that he's finally been brought to trial! Don't worry about Willie being beaten down, though, because the music on the album is every bit as fierce and powerful as ever – and features a ... CD

El Bestial Sonido (remastered edition)
Vaya/Fania, 1971. Used
One of the real standouts in the career of Ricardo Ray and Bobby Cruz – a record of incredible tightness, and one that set a whole new level for Puerto Rican salsa in the 70s! There's still a few traces here of the Latin Soul years – sometimes in the rhythms, at other times in the ... CD
