Handcrafted (American Jazz & Blues History Vol 55)

LP (Item 931178) Tobacco Road (Germany), 1978 — Condition: Sealed

An obscure little session from Kenny Burrell – recorded at the end of the 70s, and with a very laidback feel! The set was produced by Helen Keane, who'd done some of Bill Evans' greatest sets – and who had a real ear for the mellower side of the jazz spectrum. And for the record, she's got Kenny playing in a trio format that's very spacious – with only gentle accompaniment from Reggie Johnson on bass and Sherman Ferguson on drums, and most of the sound on the set coming from the strings of Kenny's guitar. Following in the gentle spirit of the set, Kenny even plays an acoustic guitar on 2 numbers – making for a very different sound than usual. Some tracks are quite long, really letting Kenny open up on his solos – and titles include "So Little Time", "All Blues", "I'm Glad There Is You", and "You & The Night & The Music".  © 1996-2019, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Sealed

This is what it says, that the record is still held fast in shrink-wrap. We tend to be pretty suspicious about these things, so if the shrink-wrap doesn't look original, or if the record seems to have undergone some damage over time, we'll probably take it out of the wrapper to ensure that it's in good shape — which is why we don't have more of these. In some cases the shrink-wrap may be torn in spots, but if it's not possible the record has been taken out and played, the record will still qualify as "Sealed".

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Kenny Burrell

Bluesin Around
Columbia, 1961/1962. Near Mint-
A rare treasure – material that Kenny Burrell recorded for Columbia in the early 60s, but which wasn't ever issued until an early 80s LP! Ostensibly, the sides were recorded around the same time as Kenny's Weaver Of Dreams album for Columbia (an obscure enough session in itself!) – and ... LP, Vinyl record album

Tender Gender
Cadet, 1966. Near Mint-
Straight, strong, and soulful sounds from guitarist Kenny Burrell – quite possibly one of his best albums of the 60s, thanks to a really well-focused sound throughout! Guitar Forms
Verve, 1965. Near Mint- Gatefold
Surprisingly wonderful work from Kenny! The album has Kenny's guitar set to arrangements by Gil Evans – who gives the session a modern edge that really sets it apart from other Burrell albums of the time. Kenny's freed to do his thing – wonderfully, we might add – and Gil paints ... LP, Vinyl record album
Prestige, 1957. Good+
One of the best blowing sessions on Prestige – and proof that Kenny Burrell could hit a nice groove when he wanted to! The record is a very open-ended set, and players include Burrell, Donald Byrd, Frank Foster, Tommy Flanagan, Doug Watkins, and Art Taylor. Side one features a great long ... LP, Vinyl record album

Cisco Kid
Groove Merchant, 1974. Very Good+
One of the best 70s albums by this funky organ player – quite different than his work for Blue Note, with a messier funkier edge that's very nice! Turn This Mutha Out
Kudu, 1977. Very Good+
A great late 70s chapter in the career of funky drummer Idris Muhammad – moving into very different territory here than his early soul jazz with Lou Donaldson, and even his earliest solo material too! African Space Program
Enja, 1973. Very Good+
One of the most righteous 70s sessions to come from the hands of Dollar Brand – a New York recording that's filled with work by a host of players from the spiritual jazz underground – all of whom soar strongly on the album's long tracks, and give the set a fire and righteous energy you'r ... James Moody

Cookin' The Blues
Argo, 1961. Near Mint-
The genius of Moody! It's an album like this that you need to prove to your friends that Moody was way way more than a simple bopper. Magic Windows
Columbia, 1981. Very Good+
A great little soul album from Herbie Hancock – but one that's often lost in the valleys between his bigger hits of the time! The record was cut in the space right before Herbie's big "Rockit" success – and it's a sweet bit of funky fusion that has a good dose of R&B in ... LP, Vinyl record album

Joe Beck

Beck
Kudu, 1975. Very Good+
A great little Kudu set from guitarist Joe Beck – a player who's sounding a lot tighter here than some of his odd psychedelic experiments of the 60s – but still pretty darn great overall! The style is smooth, as you'd expect from Kudu, but Joe's still got plenty of edges in his guitar ... LP, Vinyl record album
