Greats – Dave Brubeck

LP (Item 927746) Crown, Mid 50s — Condition: Very Good+

One of those off brand-looking albums on the Crown label – but like the rest, always better than you'd expect from the cover! Paul Desmond's included – and titles include "Que Tanto", "Cherry Pickin", "Lyons Busy", and "Faded Blues".  © 1996-2019, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Cover has a bit of wear.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Decca/MCA (UK), Late 60s. Near Mint- 2LP
A very unusual high-concept project from Dave Brubeck – with the man himself on piano, in a setting that features the Cinncinnatti Symphony conducted by Erich Kunzel, with voices too! LP, Vinyl record album
A&M, 1976. Near Mint- Gatefold
A surprisingly nice set – done with the same depth that the A&M/Horizon series had brought to Paul Desmond's records of the time! Tracks are nice and long, and Desmond's alto sounds great – and it's wonderful to have Eugene Wright back on bass and Joe Morello on drums! Titles ... LP, Vinyl record album

Columbia, 1966. Very Good+
One of the lesser-known sets in Dave Brubeck's classic "time" series for Columbia – even more inventive than Time Out! Paul Desmond plays alto – and titles include "Travellin Blues", "He Done Her Wrong", "Cassandra", "40 Days", "Tim ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jazz Goes To College
Columbia, 1954. Near Mint-
The Dave Brubeck Quartet goes to college – a pretty good place for the combo, considering how many fans they had on campus in the 50s! The sound here is never too academic for the setting, though – just the same sort of Brubeck groove first forged in the small clubs in San Francisco ... LP, Vinyl record album

Time Changes
Columbia, Early 60s. Very Good
One of the most obscure of Brubeck's Columbia modern sessions – and one of the best! Side one features more "time" oriented tunes played with the Quartet that included Paul Desmond, Eugene Wright, and Joe Morello – but side two features the extended "Elementals" ... LP, Vinyl record album
Columbia, 1964. Very Good-
An overlooked gem in the Dave Brubeck Columbia catalog – and a very hip set of "Eastern" tinged tracks! The album's theme is obvious from the title – as Dave pens a set of tracks reflecting his experiences on recent visits to Japan – but the sound and the style moves ... LP, Vinyl record album

Time Further Out
Columbia, 1961. Very Good+
Like Dave Brubeck's legendary Time Out set? Try this one – a great record that takes off from the concept of the first, but which goes in some very fresh new directions – using the same great group with Paul Desmond on alto, Eugene Wright on bass, and Joe Morello on drums! Time Out
Columbia, 1959. Very Good
Easily the crowning moment of genius for the legendary Dave Brubeck Quartet – the moment when all things came together magically, and the group somehow elevated themselves to a whole new level in jazz!
