Jon Batiste — Hollywood Africans ... CD 13.99

Think what you want about Jon Batiste on TV – the man's out to show you here that he's one hell of a pianist – and a jazz musician with a lot more depth than just his mainstream appearances! The set is mostly solo, and surprisingly beautiful – as Batiste is able to both serve up some New Orleans roots, and also hit some even more striking moments that have a much more modern appeal – this range of emotion we never would have expected, and which is mostly pretty surprising – apart from a few titles that Jon must have thrown in to keep some of the "visitors" on track. The solo piano numbers are fantastic – a real revelation – and titles include "Green Hill Zone", "Mr Buddy", "Kenner Boogie", "Chopinesque", "Nocturne No 1 In D Minor", "Is It Over", and "Don't Stop".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We have only one grade for non-new CDs at Dusty Groove — "Used CD". This grade is somewhat all-encompassing, but we choose it because we try to offer Used CDs in the best shape possible.

When you purchase a Used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use but if there are significant details or defects we will list them underneath the item — just like we do with LPs — so look there for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details.

All of our Used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. If you purchase a Used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly — and if it does not, then you may return it for a full refund.

Verve, 1966. Used
An open-ended live date from Bill Evans – recorded at the auspicious venue of Town Hall, but recorded with a warmth that matches Evans' smaller club sessions of the 60s! The sound here is possibly a bit more focused and direct than some of the moodier, mellower Evans live records – ... CD

Lionel Hampton

Air Mail Special
Verve (Japan), 1953. Used
One of the standout gems from Lionel Hampton's 50s sessions for Verve – wonderful small combo recordings that let Hamp stretch out in freer solo space than usual! Although the Hampton fame always lay in his popularly-touring bigger band, and all its related pyrotechnics, we've always loved ... CD

Wynton Kelly

Undiluted
Verve (Japan), 1965. Used
A sweetly soulful set that proves that Wynton Kelly working for Verve was a heck of a great idea! There's a cohesion and direction to the session that's missing from some of Kelly's other work of the 60s – even though the format is mostly the same, with trio backing that includes Paul ... CD

John McLaughlin & The Free Spirits

Tokyo Live
Verve (Japan), 1993. Used
... CD
Verve, 1957. Used
A great pairing of two of the coolest jazz talents of the 50s – icy-cool altoist Paul Desmond and warm-toned baritonist Gerry Mulligan! The group here continues the pianoless tradition of some of Mulligan's work of the decade – leaving plenty of room for amazing interplay between the ... CD

Gene Ammons & Sonny Stitt

Boss Tenors In Orbit!
Verve/Jazz Heritage, 1962. Used
A studio album, but one that really has Gene Ammons and Sonny Stitt recreating some of the bold energy of their live shows – coming across with a vibe that's much more Prestige Records than Verve, thanks to the presence of the Don Patterson trio on the set! Backing is by Don on Hammond, Paul ... CD

Paul Quinichette

Vice Pres
Verve, 1951/1952/1954. Used
Some of the greatest work as a leader ever cut by tenorist Paul Quinichette – longtime Basie alum, and a key player who was the "Vice Pres" next to Lester Young's "Pres". The CD combines a huge batch of tracks from the early 50s – including titles from the album The ... CD
Verve, Mid 50s. Used 3 CDs
A great 3CD package, with loads of unreleased material – bringing together all of the famous west coast sessions recorded by Stan Getz for Verve – with work by Conte Candoli on trumpet, Lou Levy on piano, Leroy Vinnegar on bass, and Shelly Manne on drums! CD

Verve, Late 40s/Early 50s. Used 2 CDs
Unheard sounds from the legendary Charlie Parker – a set that features 58 previously-unknown alternate takes of classic recordings from Parker's years with Verve producer Norman Granz – all presented here with a huge amount of detail in the notes! The set is incredible – and has ... CD

Grover Washington Jr

Time Out Of Mind
Columbia, 1989. Used
Time Out Of Mind's title track is a cover of the Steely Dan classic, circa Gaucho – and this album finds Grover embracing the 80s a lot more than his previous album for Columbia. A mix of moods, with some electric funky flourishes and fusiony keys and synths. Titles include "Jamaica&quo ... CD

Herbie Hancock

Headhunters
Columbia, 1974. Used
A seminal jazz funk session of the 70s – Herbie Hancock's legendary meeting with The Headhunters, and a killer batch of tunes that really gave the combo their name! Herbie's playing a wide range of keys here – including Fender Rhodes, clavinet, and Arp – but almost even better is ... CD
