Supervan/Funk 84

7-inch (Item 925995) Funk Night, 2018 — Condition: Near Mint-
Out Of Stock

7-inch, Vinyl record

✈

This "Supervan" speeds along at a mighty nice clip – initiating the groove with a bleep that sounds like it's backing up – while the drums propel the whole thing forward with a sharply woven mix of riffing guitar, dipping bass, and really sweet organ lines! "Funk 84" chugs along a bit slower – with round, open guitar lines loping over these great breaking drums – and plenty more organ in the middle – with a vibe that's almost like a cross between The Meters and War!  © 1996-2019, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(White label test pressing.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Funk Night, 2017. Near Mint-
Romping drums and burning Hammond organ – a mighty nice combination, and one that pushes "Pick & Shovel" out of the gate with a strong vibe right from the start! There's a great solo in the middle, too – organ that maybe recalls the work of Alan Hawkshaw at times, but ... 7-inch, Vinyl record

Your Love/Hey Baby
Argo, 1959. Good

Wand, 1974. Very Good+
"Tell Me What'cha Gonna Do" is one of the General's best sweet soul cuts – a slow-building number with falsetto soul at the start, and a deeper approach as the track builds and builds in a style that reminds us a bit of the Soul Children. "Reality" is funkier – kind ... 7-inch, Vinyl record
People, 1972. Near Mint-
An excellent hard-to-find track by Lyn Collins! "Me & My Baby" has a wonderful gospelly intro, similar to "Message to the Soul Sisters", which then leaps into a great groove with a nice hard soul hook! The flip has sort of a nice Muscle Shoals-ish sound, with some good ... 7-inch, Vinyl record
Down To Earth, Early 70s. Near Mint-
One of the best tracks from this Chicago funk legend! The tune starts with a great break, has a fuzzed-out Superfly kind of groove, and funks it on in a totally righteous way! Loads of great fuzzy guitar – and a very hip sound that takes it past most of The General's other work! 7-inch, Vinyl record
Josie, Late 60s. Near Mint-
Killer funk from one of the best-ever bands of the genre! "Cissy Strut" has some killer stone cold choppy guitars, with a sound that was imitated often, but never matched! "Here Comes" is a rolling organ-driven groove – bubbling along at a chunky funky pace! 7-inch, Vinyl record
Linco, 1971. Near Mint-
A sock-soul number with a fast funky feel – tightly snapping the groove with a sound in the back that feels a lot like an Eddie Harris Varitone sax – one that takes over completely from the vocals, partying it hard with some crowd noises on part 2! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Black Lightning

Be's That Way/Cut My Hair
MCA, 1973. Near Mint-
"Be's That Way" is a nice guitar-heavy funky track with a good deep funk groove that has a bit of a rock tinge. Played by the obscure little group Black Lightning, who may be a rock band, or might be a soul band – but who did know how to get pretty funky when they wanted. 7-inch, Vinyl record
Riverside, Mid 60s. Near Mint-
A very nice single by the great Lou Courtney, cut during the days when he was recording for Riverside as one of their only soul artists. "Skate Now" is a northern classic, and has a nice tight snapping groove. Our fave, though, is "I Can Always Tell", which has a sinister hard ... 7-inch, Vinyl record

Juggy Murray Jones

Inside America (parts 1 & 2)
Jupiter, Mid 70s. Near Mint-
Not as hard and funky as Juggy's earlier work – but a nice little cut with a funky disco groove! The tune begins with some spaced-out keyboard, has a bit of strings, and some jazzy riffing over the top. Still pretty darn catchy, with a roof on fire kind of groove! 7-inch, Vinyl record
