Fun With Drumsticks – Jazz Band Music Minus One Drummer

LP (Item 924173) Music Minus One, Mid 60s — Condition: Near Mint-
Box Set

(In the die-cut box, including the booklet, but missing sticks.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Gabor Szabo

Spellbinder
Impulse, 1966. Very Good Gatefold
Breezy brilliance from the legendary Gabor Szabo – and one of the grooviest albums the Hungarian guitarist recorded during the 60s! The set's almost a tightening up of the style that Szabo first brought to prominence in his work with Chico Hamilton – a sound that's got roots in gypsy ... LP, Vinyl record album

Grant Green

Visions
Blue Note, 1971. Good+
A wicked late Blue Note album from Grant Green – quite different than his smaller combo work from the early years, and done with some great larger arrangements that feature some ultra-hip vibes from the legendary Billy Wooten! Wooten's as great here as on his famous work with the Ninteenth ... LP, Vinyl record album

Sam Rivers

Waves
Tomato, 1978/1989. Near Mint-
Fairly loft-oriented jazz session from Sam Rivers – but with a more focused approach than you might initially imagine. Thurman Barker creates a great rhythmic foundation alongside longtime Rivers collaborator Dave Holland on bass, and Joe Daley adds another dimension to the tonal palette ... LP, Vinyl record album

Weather Report

Sweetnighter
Columbia, 1973. Near Mint-
One of our favorite albums ever from Weather Report – an album that has them picking up a bit more soul than before, and shaking off some of the experimental sounds of their roots – yet all in a way that still makes them one of the most revolutionary fusion combos of the time! There's ... LP, Vinyl record album

Sonny Rollins

Sonny Rollins Vol 2
Blue Note, 1957. Near Mint-
As classic as it comes for late 50s Blue Note – and a key meeting between Sonny Rollins and Thelonious Monk! The group on the set features Rollins and Monk with JJ Johnson, Paul Chambers, and Art Blakey – all of whom push things more in the direction of Blue Note's sound of the time, ... Buddy Tate

Tate-A-Tate
Swingville/Prestige, 1960. Very Good-
A tightly swinging set that makes wonderful use of the tenor sax of Buddy Tate – recorded in a swing-based mode that's very much in the same spirit Verve was using with players of his vintage, but in a style that's slightly rougher around the edges! The whole thing's got a nicely echoing ... LP, Vinyl record album

Enrico Rava

Pilgrim & The Stars
ECM, 1975. Very Good+
One of Enrico Rava's more over-the-top albums – recorded with a full-on trumpet sound that reminds us a bit of Freddie Hubbard in early CTI years, set into some harder jamming post-Miles arrangements! The backing is by a John Abercrombie on guitar, Palle Danielsoon on bass, and Jon ... LP, Vinyl record album
Riverside, 1957. Near Mint-
Hmmm . . . Don't know what the "difference" is here, given that the set was one of a number of Duke-inspired sessions of the late 50s, but given that Terry was a big force in the best ones, and that he's working here with some of Duke's best players, we'll give the set a thumbs up! Gerald Wilson

Eternal Equinox
World Pacific, Late 60s. Very Good+ Gatefold
One of Gerald Wilson's hippest albums for World Pacific – and all of them are pretty darn hip! This set is one of Gerald's last for the label – cut in a run of very successful, and very strong big band soul jazz albums that brought together the cream of the crop of the LA underground. ...
