Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We have only one grade for non-new CDs at Dusty Groove — "Used CD". This grade is somewhat all-encompassing, but we choose it because we try to offer Used CDs in the best shape possible.

When you purchase a Used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use but if there are significant details or defects we will list them underneath the item — just like we do with LPs — so look there for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details.

All of our Used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. If you purchase a Used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly — and if it does not, then you may return it for a full refund.

Ornette Coleman

Change Of The Century
Atlantic, Early 60s. Used
Essential stuff! This is one of Ornette Coleman's greatest albums – and it was recorded during a period when he just couldn't miss! The group features Don Cherry on pocket trumpet, Charlie Haden on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums – working here with a lively dancing sound on the kit, ... CD
Atlantic/Rhino, Early 60s. Used 7 CDs & Book
An amazing set of work by John Coltrane – some of his best recordings ever, tracks that form a pivotal point between his later 50s work with Miles Davis and his mid 60s spiritual searching years. The set's unbelievably exhaustive – and includes every track that was ever issued by ... CD

Sonny Sharrock/Freedom Sounds w/ Wayne Henderson

Black Woman/People Get Ready
Vortex/Atlantic/Collectables, 1969. Used
An odd combination – but two very nice albums! Black Woman is one of the best-ever (or perhaps the best) Sonny Sharrock albums, and probably the toughest to find. Recorded in New York, with Dave Burrell on piano, Milford Graves on drums, and wife Linda on voice. The tracks are nice and ... CD

Milt Jackson & John Coltrane

Bags & Trane
Atlantic, 1959. Used
An incredible collaboration from John Coltrane and Milt Jackson – and one that gives Milt one of his sharpest records ever! The setting is relatively straight – tenor from Coltrane, vibes from Jackson – plus rhythm from Hank Jones on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Connie Kay ... CD
Atlantic/Collectables, 1975/1976. Used
The title's righter than you might think – as Willis DOES play with feeling, despite a cheesy-looking cover that might make you think otherwise! The groove here is tight and smooth 70s jazz funk – very much in the mode of some of the more fully-arranged Kudu and CTI albums of the time, ... CD

Conte Candoli & Lou Levy

West Coast Wailers
Atlantic (Japan), 1955. Used
A lost west coast gem from the 50s – a unique quintet session for Atlantic Records, cut by a group co-led by trumpeter Conte Candoli and pianist Lou Levy! There's a bit more fire here than in some of the other sides from the time by the players – especially Levy – and in a way, ... CD
Rhino/Atlantic, 1950s. Used
Includes tracks by John Coltrane, Chris Connor, Modern Jazz Quartet, LaVern Baker, Ray Charles, Joe Turner, Charles Mingus, Lennie Tristano, and Jimmy Giuffre. CD

Billy Cobham

Total Eclipse
Atlantic (Japan), 1974. Used
Full throttle fusion from Billy Cobham, the kind of stuff we once winced at because of the really over the top moments of heavy, heavy jamming, but that we find ourselves more sympathetic to these days, probably for the more sublime moments that poke through the onslaught here and there, including ... CD
Columbia, 1961. Used
The tenor sax here makes the album a standout – as John Coltrane still works with Miles Davis on 2 tracks for the record, but Blue Note stalwart Hank Mobley joins in on the rest! The approach is similar to that of the classic Coltrane/Davis years – and in a way, the record's kind of a ... CD
Pacific Jazz, 1966. Used
One of the Jazz Crusaders' classic funky live sets from the 60's, recorded live at the Lighthouse, where there talents were slowly becoming the stuff of legend. Nice tight soul jazz stuff, with some excellent groovers that include an early version of "Scratch", plus "Blues Up ... CD

John Coltrane

Newport 63
Impulse, 1963. Used
The complete John Coltrane performances at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1963 – including one track with Eric Dolphy! All tracks are quite long, too. CD

Hideo Shiraki

Fiesta
Teichiku/Think (Japan), 1961. Used
A brilliant early album from Japanese drummer Hideo Shiraki – a jazz session that bristles with the same intensity as key late 50s work by Benny Golson or Gigi Gryce! Although Hideo's leading the group on drums, his work on the kit is remarkably subtle – done with the snappingly ... CD
