Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We have only one grade for non-new CDs at Dusty Groove — "Used CD". This grade is somewhat all-encompassing, but we choose it because we try to offer Used CDs in the best shape possible.

When you purchase a Used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use but if there are significant details or defects we will list them underneath the item — just like we do with LPs — so look there for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details.

All of our Used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. If you purchase a Used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly — and if it does not, then you may return it for a full refund.

Embryo/Atlantic (Japan), 1970. Used Gatefold
A beautiful album by Ron Carter – and quite rare, too! The record features a group that's got a nice 70s modal soul jazz sound – with players that include Herbie Hancock on acoustic and electric piano, Hubert Laws on flute, Sam Brown on guitar, and both Billy Cobham and Grady Tate on ... CD

Billy Cobham

Spectrum
Atlantic (Japan), 1973. Used
A very full-on hard heavy fusion album! Drummer Billy Cobham lays down some massive hard beats, while Tommy Bolin wails away on guitar, Jan Hammer pounds on electric piano, and Lee Sklar noodles on electric bass. 2 cuts feature a different lineup with Joe Farrell and Jimmy Owens – but the ... CD
Atlantic, 1961. Used
The title gets it right – as the album's easily the closest thing to free jazz that Ornette Coleman ever recorded – an album-length improvisation played by a "double quartet" that's overflowing with classic players! The style here is a fair bit like John Coltrane's Ascension ... CD

David Newman

Captain Buckles
Cotillion/Atlantic (Japan), 1971. Used
An excellent batch of straight ahead funk from David Fathead Newman! The record's a return to basics after a few more overly-produced sessions – and it features a stripped down quintet with Bernard Purdie on durms, Erick Gale on guitars, Blue Mitchell on trumpet, and Steve Novosel on bass. ... CD
Atlantic/Rhino, 1950s/Early 60s. Used 2 CDs
A great collection – one that's heavy on work from the Atlantic Records years, but also features earlier material too. CD
Atlantic (Japan), 1956. Used
The title says it all with this one – as Milt Jackson plays a set of ballads, and a set of blues – but both in ways that really make the best of his warmly chromatic approach to the vibes! The players here vary on different tracks, but apart from MJQ regular John Lewis, the album also ... CD
Atlantic (Japan), 1964. Used
Pianist Jack Wilson is one of our favorite underdiscovered talents of the 60's – and we treasure all of the albums we can find by him. His lyrical writing and playing are extremely refreshing, and he manages to spin out long free lines on the piano, while also still keeping a very soulful ... CD

Frank Wess, Kenny Burrell, Joe Newman & Others

Jazz For Playboys (with bonus track)
Savoy/Atlantic, 1957. Used
One of those classic 50s sessions in which a bunch of Count Basie players split off from the bigger group and do some great small combo work on their own! The album is leader-less in its billing – but only because all the players are so well tuned to each other, and have such a simpatico ... CD

Ornette Coleman

Change Of The Century
Atlantic, Early 60s. Used
Essential stuff! This is one of Ornette Coleman's greatest albums – and it was recorded during a period when he just couldn't miss! The group features Don Cherry on pocket trumpet, Charlie Haden on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums – working here with a lively dancing sound on the kit, ... CD

Modern Jazz Quartet

Complete Last Concert
Atlantic, 1974. Used 2 CDs
Not really the last concert ever from the Modern Jazz Quartet – but a set that seemed so at the time, given that the group went their separate ways for a number of years! The record's got the combo in really top form – very much back to the basics of their early time on Atlantic ... CD

Art Ensemble Of Chicago

Art Ensemble 1967 to 1968 (5CD set)
Nessa, 1967/1968. Used 5 CDs
5 discs worth of pre-history from the founding core of Chicago's AACM, back when they were simply known as the "Art Ensemble". Joseph Jarman, Roscoe Mitchell, Malachi Favors, and Lester Bowie are joined by Thurman Barker, Robert Corwder, Philip Wilson and Curtis Clark. 23 tracks in all, ... CD
A&M, 1978. Used
The Dude at the height of his powers – serving up a smooth blend of soul and jazz that set the standard for an entire generation! As with some of his other 70s albums, Quincy's working here with a host of great talents that make the record sizzle – guests that include Hubert Laws, ... CD
