The third great album from Darien Dean – a diversely talented singer, with an approach here that goes way beyond the usual! Darien can effortlessly belt out a contemporary soul tune – but he's also got this varied approach that really sets the album apart from the rest – as he seems to draw equally from jazz, soul, hip hop, and occasional global elements in his music – which makes for this varied rhythmic quality, and equally diverse sonic palette! The songs are tight, and confidently written – and Dean's delivery more than lives up to his words, on titles that include "Black Widow", "Last Song", "Autopilot", "Todamore", "Straight Up", "You're The One", "Best Is Yet To Come", and "Scorned".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We have only one grade for non-new CDs at Dusty Groove — "Used CD". This grade is somewhat all-encompassing, but we choose it because we try to offer Used CDs in the best shape possible.

When you purchase a Used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use but if there are significant details or defects we will list them underneath the item — just like we do with LPs — so look there for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details.

All of our Used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. If you purchase a Used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly — and if it does not, then you may return it for a full refund.

Leela James

My Soul
Stax, 2010. Used
Leela James burst proudly back on the scene with a killer debut for Stax Records – a set that comes across with a lot deeper sound than her previous records for other labels – proof that the newly revived Stax is a very good thing! Production is by a handful of different talents – ... CD
Plug Research, 2010. Used
A masterpiece from Bilal – the record we knew he had in him all this time since 1st Born Second came out nearly a decade prior! Earlier in his career, Bilal was one of those distinct voices you'd hear assisting myriad singers and MCs on their singles, someone you knew should be a superstar ... CD
Dorado (UK), 1994. Used
More in the acid jazz vein than some of her great laster NuSoul efforts, but still a wonderful single, with a slick jazzy feel that reminds us nicely of the mid 90s. The Outside mix gives it a jazzier spin, that we really dig, while "Secret Place" moves at a tempo that's a shade too slow ... CD

Natalie Gardiner

California
Ramjac (Sweden), 2008. Used
Natalie hails from Sweden – despite the California title of the set – but her music has a sweet, soulful sparkle that would be right at home in the US! The record's got a bit of the feel of some of the more cosmic soul coming out of the west coast underground – never too tripped-o ... CD

Algebra Blessett

Recovery
E One, 2014. Used
Wonderful work from Algebra Blessett – a singer who's really a cut above most other vocalists in the underground soul scene – with a classic sense of depth and timing that really knock this album out of the park! Algebra spent many years working under some of the bigger soul singers on ... CD
Dorado/Jazz Not Jazz (UK), 1997. Used
The second LP from this enigmatic UK soul diva. The album, like her first, has a tightly produced sample-driven funk groove, with lots of warm keyboard touches that work well with Jhelisa's shimmering vocals. There's definitely a bit more spaciness to the production style here, but it works ... CD

Monday Michiru

Delicious Poison
Kitty (Japan), 1996. Used
An album that has Monday Michiru returning to her jazz funk "roots", and singing with a band that plays live throughout, with no overdubs or samples. The band is a tight collective of young Japanese players, and they get a good hard sound that's reminiscent of the playing on the early ... CD

Johnny Lytle

Village Caller
Riverside/OJC, 1961. Used
A funky vibes classic – and a landmark set from Detroit vibist Johnny Lytle! The set's one of the purest examples of Johnny's great early groove – a tightly stepping version of soul jazz that played big in the clubs at the time, and which has forever made Lytle one of the favorites of ... CD
ESP (Italy), 1964. Used
Seminal ESP work from Albert Ayler – a unique session done as a soundtrack to a short (and weird!) film from experimental director Michael Snow! The lineup is a bit different than some of Ayler's other ESP albums – and features Don Cherry on trumpet and cornet, John Tchicai on alto, ... CD
