Red Hook Soul

CD (Item 922009) Ropeadope, 2018 — Condition: Used
$6.99 ...

CD

A funky little record from reedman Michael Blake – dedicated to the Red Hook neighborhood of Brooklyn, and served up with just the right sort of gritty style to match! Blake plays mostly tenor on the set, in a combo that has some electric touches on guitar, bass, and keyboards – balanced out with some strong work on drums and percussion at the bottom – all with a groove that echoes some of the best jazz funk styles of the early 70s, but with a leaner, more updated vibe overall! There's a few points where we'd almost swear that Blake was playing a Varitone sax – ala Eddie Harris – and titles include a great remake of "Volunteered Slavery", plus "Red Hook Soul", "The Nitty Gritty", "King Curtis", "Did You Call Her Today", "Everybody Needs Love", and "Video Games".  © 1996-2019, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We have only one grade for non-new CDs at Dusty Groove — "Used CD". This grade is somewhat all-encompassing, but we choose it because we try to offer Used CDs in the best shape possible. All of our Used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. If you purchase a Used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly — and if it does not, then you may return it for a full refund.

With our Used CDs, you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks — clean, and not dirty at all. You can also expect the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves — putting fresh cases on Used CDs we handle) — and you can expect the booklet to be in good shape, unless noted otherwise. We will list any specific details/defects underneath the item — so look for notes on cutout marks in the case, stamps on the barcode, or details like that.

Robi Botos

Old Soul
Ropeadope, 2019. Used
Robi Botos is a keyboardist with a nice sense of space – one that makes for an inherent sense of groove in his music, even when things are mellow! Robi's not exactly a funk musician, but the record has plenty of currents of that mode – as his own keyboards are blended strongly with the ... CD
Ropeadope, 2006. Used 3 CDs

Dimitrije Vasiljevic

Accidental Nomad
Ropeadope, 2018. Used
This set's the first we've heard from pianist Dimitrije Vasiljevic, and we're guessing he won't be a nomad for long – given the strength of both his writing and work as a leader on the album! The cover's a bit unassuming, but the album comes on with a bold sort of power right from the start ... CD

Adam Ben Ezra

Pin Drop
Little Big Beat/Ropeadope, 2017. Used
Pretty wonderful sounds from Adam Ben Ezra – an artist who works here completely solo, but with a flowing range of sounds that's completely hypnotizing overall! Ezra's a bassist at heart, but also plays piano and clarinet on the record – and also vocalizes a bit, and adds in some foot ... CD

Dred Scott

Rides Alone
Ropeadope, 2018. Used
Dred Scott definitely rides alone here – handling all the instrumentation on the record himself, including piano, bass, drums, and percussion – but he does so in a way that really makes you feel as if you're listening to a cohesive group! Through the magic of overdub, Scott spins out ... CD

John Coltrane & Johnny Hartman

John Coltrane & Johnny Hartman
Impulse, 1963. Used
A landmark album of vocal jazz – and one of the few sessions that John Coltrane ever cut with a singer! In a way, the album's more Hartman's than it is Coltrane's – given that Johnny's warm, mellow style of singing isn't as free and open as Trane at his most adventurous – but at ... CD
