Federal Sessions

LP (Item 920546) Federal/Sing (Denmark), Early 50s — Condition: Near Mint-

Great early material for Jimmy Witherspoon – recorded for King/Federal Records, with a bit more of an edge than some of his later work! Most numbers feature a small combo – and players include Maxwell Davis and Jimmy Allen on tenors, Earl Jackson and Buster Hardin on piano, and Mitchell Webb on guitar! The set also features an unissued track too.  © 1996-2019, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Who's Been Jivin' You
Modern/Ace (UK), Late 40s/Early 50s. Near Mint-
Early work from Jimmy Witherspoon – but the kind of sides that show that Jim had something different to offer, even from the start! The music's partly in the hip R&B mode of LA in the postwar years, but there's also a deeper sort of sound too – a bit of jazz swinging amidst the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Tony Perkins

On A Rainy Afternoon
RCA, 1958. Very Good+
Poor Tony Perkins! He actually does a pretty nice job on this early album as a vocalist, and we imagine that he forever regretted having that part of his career closed down once he played the part of Norman Bates in Psycho. Still, there's a bit of a psycho feel to this album – from the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Lizabeth
Vik, 1958. Very Good+
Pretty darn amazing – and one of the campier vocal jazz albums on RCA from the late 50s! Lizabeth sings in a "guy crazy" mode that these days would really only be the province of drag acts – and it's compelling to hear a record like this, in which songs like "Men", ... LP, Vinyl record album

Dinah Shore's definitely got a bouquet of blues here – thanks to some backings that echo the moody, late nite image on the cover!
