Guitarist John Scofield works here in a wonderful setting – a loose trio with bassist Steve Swallow and drummer Adam Nussbaum – both of whom provide just the right sort of open, spacious sound to work with Scofield's tone! John's got that very chromatic way of playing at this point in his career – waves of color that cascade effortlessly from his hands – sometimes shaping the tunes along with the rhythms, sometimes flying off on their own – in a beautifully expressive, surprisingly timeless style that really makes the album a gem! Titles include "Beckon Call", "Nature Calls", "Fat Dancer", "How To Marry A Millionaire", and "New Strings Attached".  © 1996-2025, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the CD. This might include, but isn't limited to, scratches, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We only use the grade "Used CD" for non-new CDs. This all-encompassing grade was chosen it because we only buy and offer used CDs in the best possible condition.

When you purchase a used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use, but if there are significant details or defects we will describe the item's condition (just like we do with LPs), so look for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details before ordering.

All of our used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. After you receive a used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly. If it does not, you can request a return for a full refund.

Blue Matter
Gramavision, 1986. Used
Warmly chromatic work from guitarist John Scofield – full of tones and textures that shift and shimmer about a soulful center – always as chromatic as you might guess from the album's cover and title! There's certain 80s elements in the instrumentation – especially the use of ... CD

One of our 50s favorites by Miles Davis – and a record that offers the same twin-sax sound as his classic Kind Of Blue – with both John Coltrane and Cannonball Adderley working alongside Miles in the group! Rhythm here is by the Prestige-era trio of Red Garland on piano, Paul Chambers ... CD

Don Braden

Organic
Sony, 1995. Used
A surprising organ/tenor gem from the 90s – and a really standout set in the career of Don Braden! The set's on a major label, but it's got a soulfully produced groove that makes it feel like some of the best soul jazz on the Muse imprint – really open and flowing, with a sound that ... CD

Barney Wilen

Osaka Concert
Trema/Sony (France), 1994. Used
One of the best late records we've ever heard from this masterful French tenor player! The setting is Osaka, where Wilen plays magnificently with a stripped down group that features Laurent De Wilde on piano, Gilles Naturel on bass, and Peter Gritz on drums. Gone are the bright tones and bad ... CD

A beautiful collaboration between Miles Davis and the great Gil Evans – and perhaps the most perfectly realized of all their projects! The album's got a wonderfully unified feel – as it begins with long compositions that have a distinct Spanish-tinge (and not a Latin-tinge, which is an ... CD

Herbie Hancock

Perfect Machine
CBS/Sony (Japan), 1988. Used
Herbie's still in electro-grooving mode here – not groundbreaking as earlier records, but still handled by Bill Laswell, and with a tackhead groove pretty firmly in place. The tracks are a bit more complicated than before, with vocals by Sugarfoot, and bass by Bootsy Collins. Titles include ... CD
Sony (Japan), 1969. Used
There's nothing "silent" here – as the album's a bold entry in the electric years of Miles Davis – one that still features contributions from Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, and Tony Williams – but which also expands the lineup considerably – really reaching out ... CD
