Slow Music

CD (Item 913778) Wrasse, 2009 — Condition: Used
$6.99 ...

CD

Spare jazzy work from Joyce – every bit as slow as the title promises, but never in a way that's boring or sleepy! Any new album from Joyce is always a treat, but this one seems to stand out even more from other recent efforts – as it marks a new style in her music, one that almost has the vocalist reaching for more sensitive, personal territory – recalling some of our favorite jazz singers in the process, yet still keeping enough of the acoustic charm we've always loved in her music. Joyce plays guitar along with her vocals, which undercuts any familiar torch/standard cliches – and gets support from piano, bass, and drums – the last of which are played by Tutty Moreno. Titles include "Convince Me", "Slow Music", "Medo De Amor", "Amor Amor", "Samba Do Grande Amor", "But Beautiful", "Olhos Negros", "Sobras Da Partilha", and "Valsa Do Pequeno Amor".  © 1996-2019, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We have only one grade for non-new CDs at Dusty Groove — "Used CD". This grade is somewhat all-encompassing, but we choose it because we try to offer Used CDs in the best shape possible. All of our Used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. If you purchase a Used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly — and if it does not, then you may return it for a full refund.

With our Used CDs, you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks — clean, and not dirty at all. You can also expect the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves — putting fresh cases on Used CDs we handle) — and you can expect the booklet to be in good shape, unless noted otherwise. We will list any specific details/defects underneath the item — so look for notes on cutout marks in the case, stamps on the barcode, or details like that.

Joyce

Music Inside
Verve, 1990. Used
One of the few Joyce albums ever issued in the US – a breezy outing from the end of the 80s, recorded with a bit more jazz than usual, and a number of English-language lyrics that were clearly intended to help break her into a wider market! Joyce is still very much in a comfortable setting ... CD
Universal (Brazil), 1960s/Early 70s/Mid 90s. Used
A great set that features mostly material from Jorge's classic early years at Philips – plus a few more titles of recent vintage! The early stuff's the best, though – and it ranges from driving soulful bossa, to some of the experimental funky styles that Joao used during the early 70s. ... CD

Caetano Veloso

Noites Do Norte
Nonesuch, 2000. Used
A far-reaching album by Caetano – with a wide scope of sounds and influences, from tribal/ethnic percussion, to subtle jazzy backdrops, to guitar-driven numbers that hint at a brief return to rock music. The rich tapestry of themes and images are perfectly linked by Veloso's always-wonderful ... CD

Blue Note (Japan), 1974. Used
One of the rare Blue Note gems from Brazilian arranger/composer Moacir Santos – an album of incredible warmth and charm, with a sound that's hardly been duplicated again! Santos is usually best known for his early bossa arrangements in the 60s, but here he's working in the US – hitting ... CD

Caetano Veloso

Livro
Nonesuch, 1997. Used
A great 90s album by Caetano Veloso – a beautiful re-awakening of his genius in the later years of his career! The sound here is as fresh, creative, and personal as on some of Veloso's best post-Tropicalia albums of the 70s – served up in a blend of spare percussion, edgey guitars, and ... CD

Marisa Monte

World Pacific, 1997. Used
Great stuff from Marisa Monte – and a record that's criss-crossed with influences, thanks to production by Arto Lindsay, and performances by Marc Ribot, Bernie Worrell, John Zorn, Ryuchi Sakamoto, Nana Vasconcelos, and Ed Motta! Maybe a bit slicker than the current American press hype would ... CD

Gal Costa

Plural
Ariloa (Brazil), 1990. Used
Leo Gandelman produced this one, and it's got sort of a modern jazzy sound that sits well with some of Gal's singing on here, especially on standards like "I Didn't Know What Time It Was" and "Begin the Beguine". CD
