Marcus Strickland — People Of The Sun ... LP 12.99

Saxophonist Marcus Strickland continues the electric explorations of his previous project with Meshell Ndegeocello – but works here on his own, with his very cool Twi-Life group – which certainly opens up a whole new dimension in his music! Marcus blows sopranino, alto, tenor, and bass clarinet – in a group that also has Mitch Henry on a fair bit of keyboards, with live bass and drums, and occasional rhythm programs from Strickland himself, which bring a subtle complexity to the music! The sax solos are mostly right out front in the mix – but sometimes step aside for guest contributions from Greg Tate, Bilal, Pharoahe Monch, Akie Bermiss, Jermaine Holmes, and Weedie Braimah – on titles that include "Lullaby", "Build", "Aim High", "On My Mind", "Spirit Of The Music", "Relentlessness", "Marvelous", and "Black Love".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We have only one grade for non-new CDs at Dusty Groove — "Used CD". This grade is somewhat all-encompassing, but we choose it because we try to offer Used CDs in the best shape possible.

When you purchase a Used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use but if there are significant details or defects we will list them underneath the item — just like we do with LPs — so look there for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details.

All of our Used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. If you purchase a Used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly — and if it does not, then you may return it for a full refund.

Marcus Strickland

Nihil Novi
Blue Note, 2016. Used
The reed talents of Marcus Strickland hit the sound of the new Blue Note – with wonderful results! The album was produced by Meshell Ndegeocello, and has a much more electric vibe than some of Marcus' other records – an angular, snakey sort of groove that really shows Meshell's ... CD

Horace Silver

Silver's Serenade
Blue Note, 1963. Used
A bit less well-known than some of the real Horace Silver classics on Blue Note – but an incredible record that shows the Silver Quintet at all its lyrical best! The record is a masterpiece of original voicings from Horace – not just in the unique tunes he penned for the set, but also ... CD
Blue Note, 1960. Used
A partner album of sorts to Jimmy Smith's classic Midnight Special album – recorded during the same sessions as that one, and also featuring Stanley Turrentine on tenor and Kenny Burrell on guitar! The sound here is almost even more open and stretched out – with only 4 long tracks on ... CD

Black Orchid
Blue Note, 1962. Used
Maybe the most evocative title of all the Three Sounds albums of the 60s – and one that really gets at the dark beauty of the entire record! By the time of this release (the group's 7th for Blue Note), Gene Harris and the trio had really come into their own – and were moving past ... CD

Groovy Situation
Blue Note (Japan), 1971. Used

Blue Note, Early 50s. Used
A great collection of Monk's 10" recordings for Blue Note – seminal not only for the label's commitment to a modernist bop ideal, but also for Monk's integration in the growing collection of top-level jazz players on the New York scene. The work's notable also for the fact that Monk's ... CD

Kenny Burrell & Grover Washington Jr.

Togethering
Blue Note, 1985. Used
Grover Washington Jr on Blue Note – but sounding really great here in the company of guitarist Kenny Burrell – very much back to the more basic reed work of his roots, and away from some of the smoother settings of his bigger dates from a few years before! Kenny's well-crafted guitar ... CD
