❔

Damn great work from pianist James Francies – a musician who's definitely in the best side of the new Blue Note generation – and who we hope has a legacy with the label to match Robert Glasper! Francies has this way of just grabbing notes out of the air – sometimes cascading lines of chords, sometimes more carefully stacked passages – alongside bass from Burniss Travis, and drums from Jeremy Dutton – which are then balanced with shifting appearances from Mike Moreno on guitar, Chris Potter on saxes, and Joel Ross on vibes! Most tunes are originals by James, and already show a fresh new ear – one that's full of soul, but sharply modern too – on tunes that include "Leaps", "Reciprocal", "Sway", "My Day Will Come", "Crib", "Dark Purple", and "Dreaming".  © 1996-2019, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We have only one grade for non-new CDs at Dusty Groove — "Used CD". This grade is somewhat all-encompassing, but we choose it because we try to offer Used CDs in the best shape possible.

When you purchase a Used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use but if there are significant details or defects we will list them underneath the item — just like we do with LPs — so look there for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details.

All of our Used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. If you purchase a Used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly — and if it does not, then you may return it for a full refund.

A rare glimpse of the Thelonious Monk Quartet with John Coltrane – recorded in Monk's home turf of The Five Spot by Coltrane's wife at the time! The recording was done on a portable tape recorder, but the overall quality is surprisingly strong – not in stereo, but with more than enough ... CD

Earl Klugh's second album for Blue Note – and like the first, a nicely stripped-down album that we like a lot better than his later work! Klugh's sound and tone are still very pure here – set up in some nice small group arrangements by Dave Grusin, and recorded in a way that brings out ... CD

A great one from Grant Green – a subtly modern album hiding under a title stolen from a Beatles' song – and one of the mid 60s gems he cut with organist Larry Young! The group features the trio of Young, Green, and Elvin Jones – a dancing combination that pushes the organ/guitar ... CD

Blue Note, 2019. Used

Speak Like A Child
Blue Note, 1968. Used
A very sweet, and oft-overlooked session that has Herbie mixing a nice dose of lyricism into his usual soul jazz approach from the 60s! Blue Note, 1964. Used
One of the great ones! Grant Green meets up with a youthful Larry Young, and the two of them are backed by Elvin Jones on drums, for a free-flowing, modally grooving set of organ/guitar cuts that are among some of the best-ever recorded for Blue Note. The album's a stunning mix of soul jazz and ... CD

Stan Getz/Jimmy Rowles

Peacocks
Sony, 1975. Used
A real standout in the Stan Getz catalog of the 70s – a session of mostly spare duets with pianist Jimmy Rowles, done in a way that really breaks from the format of Stan's other work of the time! Rowles here has a raspy warmth that brings out new voicings in Getz's tenor – an ... CD
