❔

Postwar jumpers recorded in New Orleans and up north – including a few tracks with Lee Allen on tenor and Paul Gayten on piano!  © 1996-2019, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Route 66 (Sweden), Late 40s/Early 50s. Very Good+
Great work from this raw R&B legend – one of the grittiest, nastiest singers of his time! Bill Doggett plays on some of the cuts – and tracks include "Drinkin By Myself", "Sittin On It All The Time", "A Love Untrue", "Wine, Wine, Sweet Wine", ... LP, Vinyl record album
Route 66 (Sweden), Late 40s/Early 50s. Near Mint-
The cover has a 70s photo, but the set features key postwar work from this early king of R&B – titles that include "Gamblin Man", "I Feel That Young Man's Rhythm", "It's A Cryin Shame", "Cryin & Singin The Blues", "Deep Sea Diver", ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ivory Joe Hunter

I Had A Girl
Route 66 (Sweden), Late 40s/Early 50s. Near Mint-
Great early material from 78s – with a jazzier vibe than some of Hunter's later work! LP, Vinyl record album

Jimmy McCracklin

Rockin' Man
Route 66 (Sweden), Late 40s/Early 50s. Near Mint-
Classic postwar work from Jimmy McCracklin – a key bridge between blues and soul! LP, Vinyl record album

James Brown

Bodyheat
Polydor, 1976. Very Good
An enduring classic from James Brown – quite possibly the strongest of his late 70s albums, and a record that nicely balances the harder funk of the early part of the decade with a more sophisticated style that almost gets slightly jazzy at times! The vocals are planted strongly at the top ... LP, Vinyl record album

Impressions

Ridin' High
ABC, 1966. Very Good
The title and cover say it all – because The Impressions here are at the top of their game – riding high on a tremendous wave of soul, and soaring forth with a sense of pride and power few other groups could match! Maestro Johnny Pate is on board to handle the arrangements and ... LP, Vinyl record album

Impact

Impact
Atco, 1976. Very Good+
Plenty of Impact from this great Philly group – a soaring quartet who harmonize with some great Bobby Eli arrangements – at a level that shines as strongly as the best 70s work by Blue Magic or The Spinners! Impact never broke the big time as strongly, but they're a great group in the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Gladys Knight & The Pips

Anthology
Motown, Late 60s/Early 70s. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold
Although Gladys Knight & The Pips didn't cut their first recordings or their biggest recordings for Motown, they did still do a pretty nice job at the label – as you'll hear on this nice 2LP set that brings together a nice batch of their best tracks. Includes their original version of ... LP, Vinyl record album
Fantasy, 1983. Very Good+
What can we say? All the best-remembered club tracks by one of the world's most unique soul artists. We're much more partial to these soulful club cuts than his later hi-energy singles, though each side is mixed into a medley, with the first side featuring "Do You Wanna Funk", "Dan ... LP, Vinyl record album
Mercury, 1975. Very Good+
A big move to Mercury for the Dells, after a pretty successful run at Cadet in the late 60s and early 70s – but the group's still in fine form vocal-wise, and on many of these they're still working with the great Don Davis, who gave the band a strong 70s soul groove, similar to his work with ... LP, Vinyl record album

Fatback

Hot Box
Spring, 1980. Very Good
Man, it must have been something to hear this record blasting out of a boombox back in the old days – especially if it was the magenta-hued one on the cover! The groove here is strong and loud – plenty of bass and beats at the bottom, and even a few surprising early electro touches ... LP, Vinyl record album

Stylistics

You Are Beautiful
Avco, 1975. Very Good+
A mid 70s album from the Stylistics which is not a great one but is has some moments. Some of the song titles are just plain goofy – "Funky Weekend", "The Day The Clown Came To Town" and "To Save My Rock 'N' Roll Soul" but there are a couple of nice slower tempo ... LP, Vinyl record album
