Back In Town (Japanese paper sleeve edition)

CD (Item 905567) Verve (Japan), 1959 — Condition: Used
$14.99 ...

CD

Originally: 18.99
Very groovy stuff – and a rare vocal group date from Mel Torme's later years! The album has Mel reprising the sound of his classic Mel-Tones vocal group during the 40s – but given the more modern setting, the sound here is a lot hipper than their original recordings – more in the mode of 50s harmonicists like The Four Freshmen or The Hi-Los. The great Marty Paich conducted, which is part of the strength of the record too – because it's got a strongly jazzy feel throughout, easily as great on the instrumental tip as it is on the vocal one! Titles include "Truckin", "A Smooth One", "Hit The Road To Dreamland", and "Some Like It Hot".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We only use the grade "Used CD" for non-new CDs. This all-encompassing grade was chosen it because we only buy and offer used CDs in the best possible condition.

When you purchase a used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use, but if there are significant details or defects we will describe the item's condition (just like we do with LPs), so look for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details before ordering.

All of our used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. After you receive a used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly. If it does not, you can request a return for a full refund.

Mel Torme takes on the sound of Broadway at the start of the 60s – but he does so in a very groovy way, thanks to hip backings from the amazing Marty Paich! The style here is as swinging and jazzy as the work that Mel and Marty cut together on the Bethlehem label in the late 50s – and ... CD

One of the hippest takes ever on the Porgy & Bess score – done in duet format by Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong, in a fuller spirit than their other albums for Verve! Like many late 50s albums of Gershwin's score, this one was issued in advance of the film with Sidney Poitier – ... CD

An excellent album of vocals by the great Joe Williams! Joe's always been a fine singer, but with Basie, he really gets the backing he needs to do his work the best.
