2LP Gatefold

Cannonball Adderley — Swingin' In Seattle – Live At The Penthouse 1966 to 1967 ... CD 16.99

Great live work from the Cannonball Adderley Quintet – recorded during a time when the group's star was really rising on Capitol Records, but at a level that's got the more open-ended, freely-blown style of their classic concert dates for Riverside! The material here was all recorded for radio in Seattle, and the fidelity is excellent – sounds that are sharp as any of the group's key live albums of the period – with some very hip announcements between a few of the tracks! And unlike some radio live issues on the market, this one is nice and long – with eight long tracks that really open up – full of magical moments from Cannonball on alto, Nat Adderley on cornet, Joe Zawinul on piano, Victor Gaskin on bass, and Roy McCurdy on drums. Titles include "Sticks", "Big P", "The Girl Next Door", "Back Home Blues", "Hippodelphia", "74 Miles Away", "Morning Of The Carnival", and Somewhere".  © 1996-2019, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Hand numbered edition #352, still in the stickered outer sleeve.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Soul Of The Bible
Capitol, 1972. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
Prime material from Cannonball and David Axelrod – and despite the biblical leanings of the title, the record is pretty darn funky! As they did for the Zodiac, Cannonball and Adderley take a trip through a host of cultural milestones – stopping along the way to turn each one into a new ... LP, Vinyl record album

Capitol, Mid 60s. Very Good
A nice once – certainly not as funky as some of Cannon's other work for Capitol, but with a dark edge that really makes it great! The core Cannonball quintet of Nat Adderley, Joe Zawinul, et al, is set up in string arrangements by Ray Ellis – a bit flowery at times, but in a way that ... LP, Vinyl record album

Somethin' Else
Blue Note, 1958. Very Good-
A landmark album – even if it was the only session that Cannonball Adderley ever cut for Blue Note! The album was recorded at a time when Adderley was working with Miles Davis – and as such, the session features a group that includes Miles, blowing in a cool tone that's a perfect ... Big Man
Fantasy, 1975. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
One of the last albums ever issued by the great Cannonball Adderley – and one of the most ambitious, too! Soul Zodiac
Capitol, 1972. Very Good 2LP Gatefold
One of the coolest, baddest, funkiest albums Cannonball Adderley ever recorded – a massive suite of tunes based on the signs of the Zodiac, produced to perfection by David Axelrod, and featuring some hip recitations from the mighty Rick Holmes! Things Are Getting Better
Riverside, 1958. Very Good-
An album that definitely lives up to its title – given the great change and evolution in the style of Cannonball Adderley's music – definitely pointed towards the soul jazz fame to come in the 60s! The group here has Adderley's alto in the company of some all-stars who may not be his ... LP, Vinyl record album

Lovers
Fantasy, 1976. Very Good+ Gatefold
Late stuff by Cannonball, with a dope spacey electric sound, no doubt due to some very nice keyboards on the session by George Duke. The album's a bit mellower than some of the others on Fantasy, but it makes up for that with a warm snaking mellow funk groove. Brother Nat gives a helping hand on ... LP, Vinyl record album

Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers

Hard Bop
Columbia, 1956. Very Good-
A killer album – one of Art Blakey's best non-Blue Note sides, and a blinding set of hard-driving jazz that well earns its title! The group is one of Blakey's pre-Timmons/Morgan/Shorter ones – with Jackie McLean on alto, Bill Hardman on trumpet, Spanky DeBrest on bass, and Sam Dockery ... LP, Vinyl record album

Quincy Jones

Mellow Madness
A&M, 1973. Very Good
A really great, oft-overlooked album from the best period of Quincy Jones! This album is quite possibly Quincy's most farthest-reaching – as he works in an array of styles that really shows his growing genius in the studio – not just jazz and soundtrack modes, but more soul-based ones, ...
